  1. I think I'm going to settle for a Casio PX310, for about $400-500 dollars. I think it would be a good long term 4-5 year investment. I've read alot of reviews on the product, and most people say its got the best action for under $1200 (its also got 32-note polyphony :/, but I dont think that will be a problem, because i'm no pro yet). My train of thought is that its better to learn it right the first time (as far as the feel goes for a piano), then to develop bad habits that are extremely hard to break. Do you think not having a mod, pitchbend, or nobs and sliders will be a problem for mixing and composing?

Anyways, much thanks for all your help guys. I appreciate all the feedback, and helpful tips.

  2. M-Audio Keystation 88 Es or Pro? or something else entirely?

    http://www.amazon.com/M-Audio-Keystation-88ES-Midi-Controller/dp/B0006676A0

I will be ordering from zZsounds...

This will be my first midi keyboard. I would be using this controller to learn the piano using Teach Me Piano for a few months, and then I will move onto traditional lessons. I will also be using this controller for composing and creating music using FL Studio 7 and any other sequencer I need as I progress. So, with you knowing this knowledge, do you think this would be the right type of controller for me?

  3. Wow, thanks a lot guys. There is some great information in here, and I really enjoyed reading what all of you have to say.

As for my opinion on the matter....

I think of music theory as a supplement, or an addition to your vocabulary. Just like having a big vocabulary wont make you a good writer. Knowing music theory and being able to play the piano won't make you a good composer, but it will sure help you express yourself, and and articulate more clearly.

  4. Just finished listening to your preview set, theres some great stuff in there. I especially like the song at :38. I can't critique your stuff , because the full songs aren't available.

All-in-all, theres some good stuff in there, definitely looking forward to hearing your music in it entirety :).

  5. Thank you very much :). Your post was both very informative, and entertaining (for me anyways) to say the least. I'll see what I can do in that department, I found a website called Ricci Adam's Music Theory and it has alot of the basics of music theory, so I'll try that out for a few weeks, and hopefully I'll be able to get a semi-weighted midi keyboard and begin practicing piano, or something along those lines.

I would just like to say thanks for your help. Haha, it kinda surprised me that you replied because I sort of think of you as a music inspiration. I love your mixes, infact you, Scott Peeples, and Reuben Kee (R.I.P buddy) inspired me to actually pursue my dreams of making music.

Haha, sorry about my own personal monologue.

    Much Thanks,

    Cree

  6. In my quest to become a better mixer, I've thought that it would be appropriate for me to get myself acquainted with Music Theory, and the major and minor scales, and the key signatures.

I've played the trumpet for 3 years in the highschool band, but I've never been formally taught music theory.

My question is, which would be more worthwhile: learning the piano first, or music theory? Also, how many of you actually know Music Theory?

  7. I like this one much better than your GBYMGM mix. Keep working on both, especially this one in particular. I think its got alot of potential :). I think if you threw in some death metal hardcore style drum loops in there it could sounds pretty edgy and badass.

  8. Hey,

Heres a few things I noticed about your songs. I like your drum loops, and some of the kick patterns, but work on progression, and a little variation. I noticed some of your synths have a pretty hard sound to them, try to change the overall tone of the song as the melody progresses to keep it from becoming repetitive (For example tone could progress as (Edgy ----> Hard/Loud -----> Medium/Slightly-Edgy ---> Edgy) you can achieve this through automation/modulation and a few other effects found within fruity loops. So for example, if the song is about anger, the beginning could be soft, the middle would be hard, and the end would be a climax and a dropoff.

I'm no expert with electronic music, but thats what I would do. Just keep working on it, and other mixes... If you feel your stuck, you can always start working on another mix, and then come back to this song when you have a solution.

    GL, and best wishes.

  9. Haha, much thanks. I just finished the 2nd draft last night right before reading your post.

I added some more instruments (a little variation), and I bumped the bass up one octave.

I'll be working on adding a little more variation in the percussion, and I'm still trying to decide if I want to put the tenor sax solo back in there. So far it sounds ok, but im worried that it may become a little too repetitive. I'll be adding those reverse cymbol crashes, and see if I can fit in some synth strings on the breaks and transitions, without the piece getting to muddy. I appreciate your guys comments, and I will continue working on this piece until I feel it is satisfactory :).

    Once again thanks,

    Cree

  10. Hmm, don't be afraid to scrap some parts if you feel that they don't fit. Just remember Thomas Edison had many failed experiments until he finally got a working lightbulb. Don't be discouraged if you have troubled laying down drum tracks or kicks, a base, or whatever may be your musical weakness. You'll get it eventually.

When it comes to the song. The vocoder has too much flange or distortion. I don't know how your voice sounds normally, but try to sing as much as you can naturally, and then use a program like Sound Forge or whatever your currently using to fine tune it.

But once again, don't be afraid to leave your song for awhile and start something new, and then when you get a good idea you can always come back and apply it to it... Music can often times be like a puzzle, you may be looking for that 1 piece for the longest time, stop looking for it, and then 3 weeks down the road you finally solve it.

    Good Luck,

    and best wishes,

    Cree

  11. Hello Guys,

I've been lurking around here for quite awhile. Haven't really been active until recently, when I decided that I wanted to not only play music, but make it. So this last weekend I decided that I was going to attempt to make my first piece even if it is lousy, completely from scratch in FruityLoops.

I am open to any feedback, first thoughts, initial impressions, or suggestions as I am new to the whole music creation process.. As you can probably tell from listening to piece is I am having a problem with cord progression, I'll probably fix the melody this weekend when I have time, but I don't like the 2nd verse to the melody. At :51 when the piano comes in, it sounds great up until the loop, then I have a little trouble progressing the melody after the loop, so I just changed the key and rythym (1:09) rythm but it sounds horrible that way. So, thats where I'm stuck for now, until I have further free time this week.

Thanks for you time and generous support.

    Your fellow newbie,

    Cree

  12. Just like the person above said. I like the orchestra accompaniment to the violin, its sounds very nice. I would definitely change the violin soundfont. It sounds too inorganic, and rapidly becomes repetitive. Try something with a nice soothing vibrato. Sorry If I'm not properly articulating myself. I'm very new to these forums, I've been lurking around for awhile, but just recently decided to voice my opinion as I become more active in music.

Overall, nice piece.. Just a few changes here and there, and you could have something dandy in a little bit.
