  1. What? I didn't comment on this?

This is one of my favorites off of OCR, probably because it's the kind of stuff I love. I think Japanese singing works better here than English would. Granted, I generally don't like Japanese Pop, but this isn't pop, this is more classical, and for that Japanese works better than many languages in my opinion. Or at least, it works better for me.

I didn't notice anything wrong with any of the pitches or anything like that, and Pixie pointed out why perfectly in her post a couple pages back.

This mix was a brilliant take on the original theme, very innovative. I give it 5/5

  2. A very nice piece by DJP, one of the most consistent Remixers on this site (and the owner, of course). Unfortunately, I never played Lunar myself, so I can't connect to the song beyond its obvious goodness.

The synth quality is not as high as it is in some of the others mixes, but the composition is excellent. And, that said, the synthing really doesn't bother me at all. But it would be cool to hear a live version, wouldn't it? It gets a 4/5 for superior craftsmanship.

  3. Well, people can argue back and forth on the lyrics as much as they please (and by the way, until we all decided to try to become Japanese we mispronounced everything in video games, from Chocobo to Aeris), but the fact remains that this song is incredible.

Great mix of themes here, and the transitions between them are well played. The singing is haunting, the lyrics fit the game while still being original, and the fact that they don't take over the song adds a lot.

Guitar playing is stylistic and suave. I really couldn't ask more of it than what it gives. The piano offsets it nicely. 40 seconds in, when the melody really starts, I get shivers. And a great ending. Really brings us down and out, unlike some music, which ends too abruptly for its own good.

All in all, a great mix, gets a perfect 5/5.

  4. I first listened to this mix a long time ago, when I was looking for things related to Longest Journey (it's one of those games that does that to you). This remix (the 5th one to be reviewed on my "Review All" list) had a place in what I still consider the best CD I ever compiled of OC Remixes.

It is a haunting melody, taken from the main theme of the game, that is exentuated by what is either talent with the strings, or good synthesizing (I'm guessing the later). A mysterious piece through and through, it even ends on a note which speaks of things incomplete, left to come.

The only complaint is that the background chords never get more complicated or creative than when they first begin, making this a fairly linear piece. For that reason, it gets 4/5.

  5. Review #4 on my "review all" list is the awesome Gypsy Remix from an awesome Super Nintendo game. Well, at least it was awesome in the past. To this day I wish had a save feature. And a plot. But I ask for too much. And I digress.

One thing the game did have (besides raptors jumping out of bushes at you) was a totally kicking sound track. And this song was one of my favorites. Finding it remixed, and remixed well, was very cool. This has a good beat, a good guitar, and a nice synth flute to tie the whole thing together. If there is one thing it lacks, it's diversity, as pretty much the entire piece relies on that background beat. Fortunately, the beat is not heavy enough to ruin it for the rest of the piece, and for that reason, this one gets a 4/5.

  6. Review #3 on my "review all" list. Well, I really don't hear much of the original at all, besides some basic chords, and that lowers it a bit in my opinion, especially as I really liked the overworld music in the first place. Otherwise, it's an okay mix, but it doesn't really go anywhere. It feels more like background music than a song in its own right, and that doesn't add to the replay value.

I'm really torn on this one. I think I'd give it a 3/5 for good quality, but personally, I rate it 2/5 because it doesn't interest me that much and I wanted more of the original in there.

  7. Wow, I can't believe I didn't review this one way back when. Okay, so review number 2 on my "review all" list.

This is defenitely one of my all time favorites from this site. It takes the techno sound and transforms it through the ICO medium into something that just carries the listener into a realm of fantasy. I'm hesitant to listen to the full 9 minute version, simply because this one is so good, and I can't think of anything to add to it. I personally like its brevity (well, brief when compared to 9 minutes!). The voice tracks are brilliant, as well.

I think the final thing to say is that this is the song which made me buy the game, and you can't get much better than that. I give it 5/5.

EDIT: Okay. I broke down and downloaded the full version. Looking forward to it.

  8. Well, I've been meaning to go back and review all the OC remixes I've ever listened to, and as you could imagine, it's quite a feat. I was looking for a place to start when I suddenly came across this old mix by Zeratul. So, regardless of whether or not I actually finish my noble quest, this mix will recieve another review to add to its grand total of three.

Zeratul almost always turns out good stuff, and this is no exception. Like his other mixes, this one employs a certain amount of repitition that serves it well. I like the jaunty feel of this piece and can think of little that would add to it. However, it isn't one of those grand mixes that makes you say "Wow!" afterwards, but at the same time it doesn't require close listening either, making it one of those tunes that is easy to just throw on while you're doing something more important and disgusting, like taxes.

I ended up giving this a 3/5, for being a good mix, if not giving me anything that exciting.

  9. I must say I wasn't a fan of FF8. I love the FF series, but that one just didn't do it for me. I think it was the battle system. Also, I didn't like the music. With that said, this piece is fantastic. If it had been like this in the game, things might have been different. An excellent song, my friend. Going into the latin feel was brilliant. Around 1:42, I think is my favorite part. Then you go into this Godfather sound, and I was laughing, thinking how much better FF8 would've been with the Godfather in it.

  10. Friggin awesome. As in, I am in awe of how awe insprining awesome this piece is. Honestly, I can't praise this enough. It's got everything a listener could desire, even switching genres (cleanly, I might add) during the piece several times. This is what a remix is all about. Pure briliance from a guy who's name is housethegrate (does that even make sense?), which makes it all the more brilliant. Any song I listen to fifteen times in a row gets special points, extra notice, and another cookie.

Oh and that piece in the begining, that's the Phantom Train, no? Yeah, you even put another song in here. House, I love you, let's go to Alabama and get married.

I'm not sure what the above sentence means, but it just goes to show how much your brilliant song has messed my shit up.

  11. Ahhh... if my heart wasn't already beholden to another, you would have it. Well, actually, just the image of you that this song creates. I've never actually met Starla before so it would be kind of silly... okay enough with blind internet love. On to the Remix!

This gives you that sense of melancholy and longing that makes me say crazy things like the above statements. I really adore this track. It's a very hard piece to wirte lyrics to, let alone sing them, and it is sung beautifully.

HOWEVER! I agree with you, injury, when you say that this could have been recorded better. Louder, and with more emotion. Yes, more emotion. A lot of the sadness of this song comes from the background music. Listen to the pure version, and you'll see what I mean. Yet, the voice adds in something so much more sincere and wonderdul... Please please do it again! I know you can! You know you can!

  12. Everytime I hear this song I think "Pink Floyd."

It really does sound like them, doesn't it?

Well at least until the rap kicks in. That's defenitely the weakest part, and almost takes away from the quality and coolness of the piece (though I liked Niggaz for Life, which I believe was done by the same rapper). Still, it ends up getting a 4/5 for being oh so listenable. Good work, guys.

  13. This piece is brilliant. Not a particularly easy track to remix, the first part, "Flying Over Corneria." I love the sci-fi voice cuts here. Enable all systems. Set weapons to prime. Indeed.

The second piece remains my favorite part. A drifting quality has been added in alongside the pop style of the mix, and together the two work wonders reminiscent of One Girl in All the World, or was it All the World in a Girl? I can never keep the two seperated... hold up.

It's the All the World in One Girl, also by the WIngless. I hear a lot of that piece in here, and it works really nicely, adding an almost sad quality to the piece.

Anyways, good work WIngless, one of your best. Keep this up and I'm sure your wings will return.

  14. This is strange, I posted yesterday on this and it's not here today...

Oh well. Basically I said excellent job. You were able to take a piece I didn't like and make me enjoy it on the very first listen. I don't think I had any suggestions, I really enjoyed it. Next time I play Kingdom Hearts, I'll turn off the sound in the jungle and turn on your tunes instead.

  15. I generally do enjoy Star's vocal mixes. In fact, I think the only one I didn't like at all was the Space one. In contrast, his Mega Man X one is my favorite. He used the original tune as a foundation for what became his own song. It never strays far enough that the Mega Man isn't recognizable (for those of us that DID beat the Spider Boss), but is new and refreshing and thus keeps us interested. His lyrics are hilarious, but when presented this way somehow make me feel like I'm listening to comments on the soul. Wonderfully done, brilliantly put together, a masterpiece remix through and through.

Can't wait to hear his next vocal piece. Oh, and nice with the Capcom fanfare. Go Capcom, yeah!

  16. One of my favorites. Pilotwings had some wonderful music. This piece has been remixed in a way to make it BETTER than the original, if not much different. I get visions of Ray Charles, bluesing it under a spotlight, singing in that rich voice of his. Every time I hear this piece I stop what I'm doing and groove with it.

For a piece that doesn't improvise any remixing, it sure is nice. I consider it a masterpiece here at the OCREMIX. Not every song has to blow my mind to blow my mind, if you get what I'm saying.

  17. When I first listened to this piece, I was like "Oh no, another heavy beat accopmanying a classic title. Boring." I was very pleasantly surprised to hear the bongo-esque drumming, and bells covering the main theme in a very tubular fashion.

It's short, and I like that. It's happening, and I like that. It isn't the most inspired or instrumentally talented piece, but it does what it does well, and I like that.
