  1. I find their arrangements to be hit or miss, so they usually have a couple tracks per album that keep me interested. I'll be surprised if this release isn't more of the same.

And yes, their vocals make me want to barf. Good thing those tracks are a minority.

  2. You're right. But it's really strange seeing that anyone other than the Japanese seems to genuinely care about those oldies than the Japanese themselves.

    Contra 4? ;)

Yeah I'm quite stoked for this, even though I won't be owning it any time soon. I've been quite skeptical of some 2.5d remakes. The new rondo of blood, the chibi-ish mega man remake, and even new super mario brothers didn't sit well with me. Nothing about the switch to using 3d graphics seemed like an improvement or desirable in any way... not to me at least.

But whatever it is they're doing better for Bionic Commando Rearmed, I think they've won me over.

  3. Woah, way cool!

I can't bring myself to place these composers' names into the "artist" tag.

    Here, here!

I migh adopt some of your tagging methods. I'm a fan of my current set up, using "VG Music" as the artist and the console as part of the album name. But in regards to songs with "official" titles, I fully agree. It'd be nice to clarify when songs are named on a best assumption (world 1, world 2, etc), vs. when the names are official. I know all the song names for Ninja Gaiden 2 are correct because they are taken from the soundtest.

It's nice to see we have very similar ideas and concerns, although I'd feel completely overwhelmed by trying to rip an entire collection, including flac, and having mastering down to a universal plan like yourself. I can be quite anal, but it looks like you've outdone me there. :) Which is why I'm doing these more as 'random favorites', so I can get away with doing things more casually in a 'as they come' kind of way.

This is unrelated to vgmusic, but you may be interested in another blog post of mine here. Archive is a place for uploading music you own or have permission to put up, so I don't think vg music qualifies, but if you're not already into archive.org I suggest checking it out-- if there's anything in your collection you want to preserve, that would be the place to do it.

  4. Oh wow, huge thanks man! I'll make the appropriate edits to the article. The version of treasure master I grabbed had the same amount of tracks, it's possible that akumu used kingshriek's version in his archive.

I believe Zillion was made concurrently, but I could be wrong. Which is why I vaguely referred to it as a "companion". :) I love the anime version with the vocals-- I didn't hear it for a while until I was already familiar with the chiptune.

Interesting and all, but make sure to observe copyright laws so you don't get in any unnecessary legal trouble.

Thanks guys, but I imagine I'll remain under the radar with this stuff. There are massive archives full of ripped soundtracks (like zophar, snes music, and project 2616, just to name a few) that make this stuff readily available, out in the open. Until I hear horror stories of nsf archives getting ceast and desists, I'm assuming my little blog will be unnoticed.

  5. http://www.archive.org/details/Chromelodeon-SpriteSlowdownV2

I played drums on this short vgm tribute, and it was recorded a little over a year ago. With the band having broken up since, and this ep never having a 'proper' release, I decided to put it up for download. It was very much rushed for release at magfest 5 (and never performed prior to recording), but having just listened to it again more recently I appreciate it more than when I first heard it. A bit rough around the edges, but not as bad as I recalled!

Some of the track selection may be a bit on the esoteric side, hope you enjoy.

    Track Listing -

    1. Final Fantasy 6 (SNES)

    2. Fire 'n Ice (NES)

    3. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (Atari Lynx)

    4. Kenseiden (SMS)

    5. Abadox (NES)

  6. Also, homebrew is probably not even bothing with since PSP homebrew blows it out of the water, but are there any intersting DS homebrew apps? Maybe some stylus enabled games or something...

I haven't looked into homebrew games yet, but I have moonshell set up on my DS. It is a linux based gui (not that I know shit about the technical workings of linux, or computers in general), which essentially acts your desktop/browser of sorts.

    http://mdxonline.dyndns.org/archives/nds/

    http://wiki.pocketheaven.com/MoonShell

If functions as a sort of multimedia browser- basic image types are supported but it seems that videos have to be converted to another format, which I haven't tried yet. The best part about it, for me, is that it plays nsf, spc, and mod files. Because ripping tons of emulated soundtracks to mp3 would be insane, moonshell effectively turned my DS into my portable NSF player.

I also went through and replaced all the standard moonshell images with a little smb3 theme I came up with. There's one thing left I have in mind to make it look a little nicer, but I'm happy with how it looks-

    DSC00001.jpg

    Browsing NSFs

Listening to some Metroid. The Power Meter is the progress bar ;)

You would think that with the stylus and all there'd be a decent flash/ swf player for the DS, but a working one doesn't seem to exist yet. :( I'd like to get some flash games on here.

  7. Obviously. But if I don't know or care what I'm missing, it's no problem :) The whole point of why I'm remixing in the first place is out of nostalgia, so why pay homage to something I've never experienced? Hell, why even listen to the music designed around that experience?

For me, there is a nostalgia in chiptune and older vgm music formats, regardless if the tune or game its from are familiar to me. I've picked music from games I've never played for my band to cover... they're only a minority, but the homage still feels worth it. More are on the way too. :)

But the original question was if you've bought soundtracks to games you've never played before. Can't say I have. If I like a more modern soundtrack, it is probably because I played the game. And there's a good chance that if I played the game, I own it (I don't go out and game with friends enough). In which case, I'd just play the game to hear the music... or do like I did when I was a little kid and record the audio I REALLY like from the game (nevermind ripping the data or anything fancy like that).

  8. I'm a bit apprehensive about the whole 3D thing...New Super Mario Bros. pissed me off and Maverick Hunter X was OK...not great but OK.

I wouldn't be, because regardless of how the 3d/2d remake looks, the original is still on there. Sounds like a win/win situation (what bahamut said). Between this and MGS my interest in the PSP is growing... but I can't warrant buying one anytime soon.

But hell, just the fact it has a souped up SOTN is worth the 50$ already

Isn't it just a direct port?

edit: Ah, with full screen and re-translations (maybe they'll remember to switch malachi and cthulu's names around).

  9. :P

    Swords and Serpents

    :)

    Right on, sir.

That game is all sorts of shitty. My brother and I attempted playing through it a couple times a while back, but always got bored. We had a sort of a love/hate relationship with the game. The in-game humor is just awful and awkward ("who's zooming who"..." coming up... its another... ZOOM TUBE ACITVATED), and of course the gameplay isn't all that interesting. Plus you hear ALL of the game's music within the first couple minutes, so it gets very aggrivating.

So eventually we went back determined, with the 4 score set up, and two controllers to each of us. We beat it, and somehow it almost felt worth it. Almost. We enjoyed it with some sort of ironic distance.

  10. Um, Metal Gear to Metal Gear Solid, anyone? And of course MGS2 was better than 1, though I think MSG3:S is probably the best.

    Within the first series too-

    Metal Gear 2 MSX > Metal Gear (1) MSX/NES, by a longshot. ;)

Solid Snake, not to be confused with Snake's revenge, made the subsistence release all the more worth it.

  11. I see your point, but do you realize kids are hearing that music and think it's totally original? It reminds me of the time my buddy brought over his kid sister and saw me playing the OG Donkey Kong on NES. She saw me get the hammer and said, "They stole that from Smash Brothers."

I asked him and her to leave.

    That is beautiful.

  12. Not sure why things are getting so heated. Things are pretty cut and dry with the laws, and the only thing to really get bothered about is whether or not Timbaland stole the tune as source material.

Kinda sounds like it for the ringtone thing.

While I don't know where to find any statements from the owner, this is getting closer-

From a thread on Something Awful entitled "Timbaland ripped off a track from my buddy" (page doesn't load half the time, so here goes)

I've been an avid Demoscener for many years now, a subculture of creating art on computers (check demoscene.info and the demoscene wikipage for more info)

Basically we create 'real time' videoclips on new and old hardware. Stemming from cracktro's before games it became a scene on it's own where people come together at parties and compete in various competitions ranging from music and graphics to all kind of demo variations.

This is all done for fun and all productions are released for everyone to enjoy, first on BBS's and now on the internet.

So yeah, Timbaland is the next big thing since sliced bread, he's quite a skilled producer and makes many, many millions producing the hottest artists. So it is quite surprising when for Nelly Furtado's track 'Do It' on her latest album 'Loose' he blatantly stole a c64 conversion of an Amiga mod made by the Finnish demoscener Janne "Tempest/Damage" Suni.

To explain, in 2000 at Assembly, one of the biggest demoparties in Finland, Tempest competed in the so-called 'Oldskool Music Compo', a competition ment for music on old platforms like Amiga, c64, ZX-Spectrum and the likes. His entry 'Acid Jazzed Evening', a 4 channel Amiga .MOD won the competition. For your convenience I converted the mod to an mp3 which you can get here. The original .MOD file you can get from Scene.org here.

A c64 musician called grg remade the song on the c64 (using the infamous SID soundchip) which is what Timbaland used for Furtado's song. I also converted this SID to mp3, which you can get here.

And here is a 40 second clip of Nelly Furtado's track 'Do It'.

He literally stole the whole musical line to build this song around. I talked to Tempest and he told me that it's no use going to court, eventhough Scene.org supplied papers saying the song got uploaded on their servers in 2000. Fighting a big corporation like Geffen costs tons of money and time, which he does not have.

It's all kinda sour, to know that Furtado and Timbaland make a buckload of cash using a tune that was released for free. So the least I could do was to post about it on the internet and let people know.

So there! Spread the word! Timbaland is a thieving bastard!

edit: my buddy Gloom made a youtube video showing the similarities in both songs, you can watch it

edit: rehosted on genietervan.com (dreamhost.com)! please mirror people!

I never thought I would see a post about amiga scene music and nelly furtado at the same time, pretty epic.

  13. I'm not going to dismiss the work Timbaland put into it, but that's not the point. Calling him talentless and the like is not only silly, but irrelevant. Putting that aside, I'm sure we can agree that this is a bit over the top and beyond the acceptable boundaries of sampling w/out giving credit.

This is an a whole different plane than the "mj made sonic music" thing, I'm not sure why that was brought up. The original was sampled into Do It, meaning that the sonic comparison would only be relevant if you actually heard the genesis/megadrive music sampled into Michael's work or vice versa.

I would like for this to spread around the net. Even if Tempest can't open a case and win, it's a good idea to share this. I know people who like making chiptunish music. The way I see it, is it could've been any one of them.

I mean I don't even "hate" Timbaland now or anything... Tempest just needs some credit, and I think it's worth pointing this out. ;)

One thing about this situation though, I actually find really funny. Can you imagine Timbaland sitting on his computer, browsing scene.org? Yeah, what the fuck?

    Hahah, exactly.
