  1. Cheese strats are actually my favourite to play against just BECAUSE they're so easy to win against. They're all essentially all-in strats that basically only work because someone didn't scout properly but the person doing it gets so far behind economically immediately after it's fended off.

I wouldn't say a mineral line rush is cheese as they're easy to defend against.

There are ways to 'cheese' in a conservative fashion that work well for some races, at least for how most plat/diamond players operate. Look up a Terran's 1:1:1 build. It allows for versatility in unit composition AND nasty drops/harass. Considering how a game goes, it's very easy to transition to an end game strategy with.

As a zerg player, I HATE dealing with this build. As it may be easy for a zerg to build lots of units fast, they don't get new units/utility as quickly as protoss or terran.

  2. I've been getting raped by cheese. From baneling drops on my workers to massing infestors and spewing out TONS of infested terrans. It was all my fault too.

I love folks that are wary of baneling drops. They move their workers off the mineral line even when I'm just scouting with an overlord. I don't blame them for being cautious, but unless they haven't scouted, most zerg players don't learn to hide tech buildings very well, namely a baneling nest.

  3. Figured i'd post here instead of making a new thread about it. Would anyone at all be interested in a sc2 tournament? if we got 6-8 people it could be pretty enjoyable.

I'd be down for that. Just as soon as I get my internet connection installed.... I hate those first few weeks of moving into a new apartment. Can't even post on this thread without using a computer other than my own.

  4. Well, the mission is designed as an introduction for goliaths, so siege tanks really won't be that useful. Most groups in that mission consist of a shitton of void rays/scouts and only a few zealots/stalkers. You should give it a try once you get Vikings.

They're especially nice once they get splash damage and their range bumped up to 11. They're basically anti-air, flying siege tanks at that point. Their mobility makes them better than thors at anti air at that point, if you ask me.

  5. The trick to the last zeratul mission is that the waves that come at you are determined by YOUR situation. So long as you have a single building up, the computer will generate ground units (mostly zerglings, which are the bread and butter of the kill count) along with some air units and a small amount of anti air. Abuse that by making a lot of void rays and carriers. However, once you lose all of your buildings and ground units, the computer generates nothing but anti air/ air units. By that point, the opposing wave will probably take you out.

I managed 2280 on hard with that in mind.

  6. I've played two practice games now and I beat the first guy I played but lost against the second. First guy didn't build a lot of defense and I managed to rush his base with zealots. The second guy sent a ton of the reapers after me and destroyed my SCVs, just after I moved my marines out of my base. Both games lasted under 10 minutes. I imagine that the "rush" is still going to be the standard style of gameplay, though I get the impression that there are more tools now to help you defend against early rushes.

If you find yourself falling prey to that sort of stuff, make sure that scouting is your number-one priority, provided that you can keep your scout alive while still building your base/tech/army.

One trick ponies tend to flounder out if you can stop their cute little rushes, especially if they went too hard on getting units and didn't build an economy.

  7. well the thing about a second thread (or a lock of this thread to start a new one) is having the first poster be someone who would update the list often

Yeah, I was wondering about what happened with the thread I posted yesterday for an SCII player list. I suppose I'll create a discussion board in the SCII group for that very purpose.

As for the numbers, I STILL haven't played any multiplayer, as the single player is just that awesome. As a result, not only do I not know my identification number, I didn't even know they existed until now.

I just want to get 15 points in my zerg research to get my hands on those Predator anti-infantry mechs. Those look fun as hell!

Though I will be checking this thread for player info posted, I guess I'd encourage people to join the social group and post their info on the thread there. Kind of clunky to consolidate info between two threads, know what I mean?

  8. I've decided that even though there's already a thread for this, another one should be created in light of the retail release of SCII (considering that the previous thread was for the beta, that would just be confusing to use the same one). Just post your in-game name that you have displayed on b.net 2.0 along with which region your client is in. I'll make sure to check on the posts and update the list as often as I can. Your community name will be posted followed by your in-game name in italics.

Hope to see plenty of folks sign up!

  9. I'm going to some crappy midnight release party of this thing just because my friend wants to.

I can understand if it's something to do BEFORE the midnight opening, but if you're going to stick around for festivities AFTER the release... all I have to say is what is wrong with you? You play a game when it's released, you don't go to a party for it.

  10. 12 years I've been looking forward to a sequel, and in a mere 12 hours I will be waiting in line. That feeling of joy and torture all at the same time.... nerdgasm.. yes, indeed.

What's got me gnashing my teeth is that folks in Asia are already enjoying it. Once again, the Koreans are always one step ahead of us in Starcraft.

  11. With a very limited amount of players allowed, and on such rigid schedules, I don't know what they hope to accomplish if they were looking to get bugs/glitches ironed out, not to mention this isn't a good way to test the capabilities of servers/hardware.

Am I speaking with bile and acid because I didn't get opted in? Probably.

  12. Looks like things are beginning to pick up for phase 2 of the beta, as patch 16 is (sort of) ready to be downloaded for the beta, at least for the european regions. You can check the info on it in this link:

The alleged notes for said patch can be found here:

Here's to hoping we can see it by the end of the week, and hopefully as a fully open beta.

  13. That is awesome. And it's amazing to think that the game is NOT EVEN RELEASED YET.

Oh and, apparently the beta is coming back up on the 1st of July. YESSSSS

    sauce: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=132635

It may come as a shock, but that thread was shafted to the 'closed' list of threads recently, as there has been no news of the beta's 2nd phase coming in from Blizzard. Blizzard itself said that there would be no release of the 2nd phase without an official announcement in advance of that very date.

The info they came across was in regards to some event being held exclusively in South Korea, supposedly.

    It's a sad day. I know.

  14. Has anyone heard of any interesting pre-order specials, be it from Amazon, GameStop, etc? I should have placed my pre-order with Amazon when they were offering it for $10 off the time-of-release price.

I didn't know what amazon was doing, but I was well aware of the beta-key you get from GameStop when you pre-order from them. If you know you're gonna get it, you might as well be playing it now :).

  15. Has anyone with a Nvidia Geforce 200 series had problems with the graphics since patch 9? It's been taking longer to load a match, and I've also had problems where fps will sporadically get choppy for 4-5 seconds, making my micro lack-luster.

  16. http://www.destructoid.com/no-cross-server-play-for-starcraft-ii-out-of-the-box-171615.phtml

What a bunch of horseshit. What's keeping them from just making the matchmaking itself regional? I won't be getting the game at all as long as I can't play with my OCR buddies.

What's the demographic distribution here on OCR, from a location aspect, anyway? Makes me wonder how much of the community I can play with/against now...

It also makes me wonder how much of a grip Blizzard will have on online functionality for this game. Will they throw a fit over home-brewed or private servers?

  17. NOTICE: The player naming and friend adding mechanics for the SCII beta have been revamped. If you wish to add a person from this list, you must now have his or her e-mail address, since identifiers (two-word names) no longer exist for players. That being said, this still provides a list of folks who are in the beta, and I encourage that e-mail addresses are shared if you still want folks on your friend's list! Whether it be by posting it on this thread, or just directing folks to your community profile for that info, that's up to you.

Nothing much to say beyond this. The old thread was started by Shadow Wolf, and we've heard not hide nor hair from him on that thread in some time. I suppose I'll compile a list of the players in the community and their handles on the SCII Beta. If you make any changes to your handle, or I've forgotten about your handle, be sure to let me know so I can update it on the post.

  18. Should we get a list up at the top of the thread of folks in the beta? I haven't seen the OP on this thread for quite some time, so it may be best to just start a new one?

My handle is Volkspanzer.carapace and I'm gold league 1v1.

  19. One more bit of good news after another: a significant patch has come to the SCII beta. It has added a good bit of 1v1 and 2v2 maps for ladder and regular matches.

In addition, they have a working version of the SCII Map Editor. Though I haven't tried any of the scripting abilities (I probably won't either), it should be something to look forward to. If it's going to be more robust than the Warcraft III map editor, I can't wait to see what it can deliver. You should be able to to test the maps you create, I hear, while not being able to play online with them just yet.

On gameplay customization, they have FINALLY allowed for hotkey templates to choose from. That's right: Starcraft finally has the ability to use a grid-style hotkey layout! Your keyboard hand can finally stay on one spot of the keyboard to use all building and unit abilities universally! I'm not sure if mods/add-ons have allowed for this on the first Starcraft in the past, but I'm excited all the same.

As far as mechanics are concerned, they turned my zerg-world upside down! You can no longer target a unit/building with an ability or command within a group via the wire-frame ( the box where all of the units are displayed within a group. No more quick chrono-boosting for Protoss, and no more quick spawn larvas for Zerg (at least not in the sense that most players are accustomed to).

Also, larva are no longer lost due to canceling an egg morph. It's causing quite a stir balance-wise, as zerg players can stretch the amount of larva they have at a hatchery long before a queen comes into play (I've heard folks putting out 10-12 zerglings on a 6 worker spawning pool rush, rather than the standard 6 zerglings). It also allows for crazy unit switches on the flip of a dime. Say you're building up your economy and begin to produce 9 drones at your hatcheries. You scout to find that your opponent is about to attack you early. You can immediately cancel all of those workers and turn them into zerglings instead. While this may seem all good from a flavor stand-point (zerg are adaptive little beasties), players who play zerg, protoss, and terran seem to be on both sides of the fence as to how this will play out. Here's a thread about the zergling exploit:

    http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=121021

Also, using the hatchery's 'Select Larva' command will now select eggs if there are no larva. Most zerg players are finding this annoying to no end:

Hmm, I might just do that.... also ten bucks on me winning said tournament :nicework:

Money, eh? Think there should be an entry fee for a community tournament? Cash prizes for the top players, eh? EH??

  20. As a well-concealed bump, I'm here to say (for those of you who don't know) that there is a new way to get yourself a beta key for SC2: pay 5 bucks for the preorder at Gamestop, and they will print out a beta key for you on the receipt.

If you've already pre-ordered at a particular Gamestop, I suggest you go over there and pick up the key (which you are absolutely entitled to). I was able to pick up my 3rd key this way without need of a receipt, so long as you have your name in their pre-order list database.

There's a policy for online pre-orders: If you use the beta-key provided by the pre-order, you cannot cancel that pre-order. I'm sure that there's some sort of fail-safe in place to ensure that you can't cancel, but pre-ordering in person is supposedly a different matter entirely. I've heard stories from a few folks that have managed to get their beta-key and then cancel the pre-order.

So with this being the most accessible point in the beta as of yet, one question remains: when the hell is the OC community going to have its first SCII tournament?

Five bucks for a beta key -- some fellows out there on ebay must be feeling pretty darn stupid about now.

  21. As I see it, any game can be serious/hardcore if it can make you feel horrible after doing something wrong or losing. Tightly-balanced competitive online games tend to bring this out the most if you ask me. Casual games either are too easy to lose, or if you do lose, you don't feel any negative impact because of it.

  22. A few days have come and gone, and Blizzard has taken a different approach for the next wave of beta invites. Anyone who has already received a beta key may have received an ADDITIONAL beta key to give out to a friend via e-mail (no doubt via the address tied to his/her battle.net account). If you already got your key in a previous wave, check your e-mail, and spread the love!

I'm not sure if this is in addition to a wave of standard opt-ins, but if this is all they did to include more players into the beta, I can sympathize with anyone who'd be upset over such an action. Hear me out:

The simple fact that anyone can be invited by a beta-tester leaves the opportunity for people who weren't even waiting for the game (or even knew about it) to get in. The result: a bunch of folks who'll probably dabble with a few matches and then drop it when they find out they aren't that much into a game like Starcraft 2. This will lead to wasted invites and less data/feedback from the community.

Personally, I gave my additional beta key to a fellow opt-in who wasn't fortunate enough to get picked in any of the waves as of yet.

Be responsible with the invites; there are plenty of foaming-at-the-mouth opt-ins to choose from.</soapbox>

Also,to anyone else that's enjoying the beta, throw your battle.net 2.0 handle out on a post. Unless IRC channel is abuzz with sc2, I don't see anyone giving out names.
