  1. I didn't really like this. Normally I am all over chip sounding stuff, and this style of processing and glitch work is also up my proverbial alley, but this just rubs me the wrong way. There's some synth or sample or something that is absolutely grating on me.

*Scrolls up* Oh, maybe that's the voice sample? Not sure, never played the game. Also, it doesn't feel like the mix evolves much during its course. I mean granted I have disliked other works for moving TOO MUCH or having complete shifts in direction, but this just sort of sits in its one happy little place and doesn't feel like going out anywhere.

Normally that would be fine, but with a mix this short to feel like it is repeating itself is just something I can't get over.

Still, it's pretty well constructed, the sounds themselves (other than that one sample/synth/thing) are good enough, I just wish there was a bit more direction to it.

  2. Somehow i missed this the first time around- :o

Same. Saw this come up and was like "Lonely petals? Nyo~~?"

This is a great, personal arrangement of a well-worn source. The mood is fantastic, I love the upbeat nature of the improv, serves as a contrast against the plodding, methodical, and lonely nature of the original.

I guess I am going to have to go and listen to the entirety of reserve tank. I started into it, but there were so many bad tracks that I ended up only going for the artists that I implicitely trusted. Guess I can add Doug's name to that list after this.

And his chrono trigger all-percussion mix. Actually, in retrospect I should have trusted him after that alone...

  3. Gah! How am I supposed to be critical of someone that consistently puts out fun, entertaining, interesting, and above all -good- stuff?

This actually sounds like it takes some cues from zircon. This is a good thing, I love that dude's musics. And I don't care enough to distinguish between genres of electronic music, so I'll just say that I hear some influence maybe. Or maybe they have a common influence. Who knows?

Oh, right, the track. It's good. Listen to it. Not my favourite from the project, but it was a solid contender and more than anything else helped to keep a fairly stellar project up as far as the bar went. Really though, nothing to complain about here.

  4. It's really tough to sound original when doing an orchestral take on Metroid, it seems. No matter what I hear, it seems that as soon as orchestral elements get infused into the awesome scores of these games, it all comes out sounding very much the same.

I think a lot of this comes down to the emotions of the people who write these arrangements. They have in their heads the grandiose adventures of a butt-kicking superchick who can totally destroy you in more ways than are comfortable, and that's before she puts on her gear. Add in the fact that people who write orchestral arrangements tend to gravitate towards the more well-known tracks, and it's a recipe for samey-ness.

As far as individual efforts go, this is a good one. Fantastic merger of themes, all of it is well done with an ear for detail and is subtle and nuanced with just enough love to make it enjoyable, and not be overbearing.

The problem is, it doesn't really push any boundaries, or take any chances. There's nothing here that I haven't heard. Granted, this isn't a case where I have heard a lot that was also better, but it's still not the most original concept.

Still, I give it a passing grade, if I handed out grades that is. As a tribute, it works, as a ReMix when compared to the source, it works. Everything else is subjective, I guess.

  5. Wasn't really feeling this track. The intro, which seems to get a lot of praise, is actually pretty off-putting for me. The disparaging elements of a chippey synth, the more orchestral strings, none of it really feels like it was meant to be part of the same arrangement. Instead, it feels like it was a bunch of different elements that all sounded good on their own, and were sort of put into a tumble dryer.

The changeup in styles and tempo is quite nice on its own. Great use of a genre change to prove the power of the ReMix. Still, it all sounds rather muddled and bland. Sort of like you were going for the smoke-filled jazz bar scene but instead of just a few guys in berets you had about 20. Could have really used some filling out as far as the soundscape goes.

And then you go back to your original tempo and style again. WTF? Why did we need that again, did you just want to cement "Hey look at me, this was a remix of 'Hurry' from FFX, don't you forget it! Remixer thumbsup!" It seems like a disservice to your movin' and groovin' section that we were enjoying that you bring us back to the less movin' and far less grovin' parts again. And not even that, but it feels a bit tacked on, there's not much in the way of transition there, so it is quite jarring.

I would have liked to have seen the central section extended out, get rid of the intro and outtro (or at least clean up the intro some) and then see what goes on from there. Because the central portion was quite good, I did enjoy it, but it only feels like a sidequest in the "prove the power of the ReMix by gather 10 spider silks" mission. Or something.

  6. No, that's not a good example. Production quality has nothing to do with whether something's a standards violation. "Collision" wasn't rejected on just "a name and similarities to something else." That would be like rejecting a mix for tributing/emulating someone else's style. The mix name also wouldn't matter. "Collision" used substantial portions of a non-VGM song, which we don't allow any more.

My bad, my bad. My point was that there are tracks that have great production that get rejected with higher production than this one, based on other circumstances. Probably should have done more than 30 seconds of head scratching before trying to make my point.

Anyways, OT: I don't actually like this track other than the Luigi section, which uses some awesome vocalization. The main thing this track has going for it is being amazingly catchy, in addition to having a hilarious flash video associated with it (or several depending on how much of a purist you are.)

  7. Find me a rejected mix with better production than this.

"Collision" by Darangen from Voices of the Lifestream. It was rejected for being too close to some mainstream song (would have to dig up the thread.) Basically a stellar track that is very obviously ff7 and incredibly well produced got rejected because it shared a name and similarities to something else.

Although to be honest, your challenge is pretty tough since this is quite well produced. I'd have to go digging but I know that lots of well made tracks get rejected for having poor arrangement.

  8. Ah, the book of eli. Where the soundtrack was really the only great thing about it (other than some damn fine acting.)

What to say here, other than I am totally and unabashedly digging it? I've kind of wanted to see what the Maze Dude could come up with going a bit darker - I always found that when he had those more burtonesque stretches in his tracks where things got all dark and twisted were some of the greatest. Not to say he sounded like danny elfman, just that he could have stood in for him in some movies :D

Oh right, seem to have lost my train of thought. Oh wait, there it is.

The track is pretty cool. Not as chippy as the average maze, not that it would inherently work for this. Not really familiar with the fallout 3 OST, have friends that play it religiously but I never have had the time. So that said, no idea how well it takes the source.

As far as being a standalone track then, this is pretty cool. I love the mood set up here, the production, while not stellar, has an awesome feel to it that I can't quite quantify. Those leads are fantastic, I love the emotion in it all.

Yup, nothing constructive here except some gushing. Carry on, carry on.

  9. The drums in this were no where near as repetitive as the drums found in the source. Oh the agony of listening to that track on endless repeat. I loved it and all, but trying to find the sky esper (x something?) and hearing that drum loop was madness.

I agree the mix could have been fleshed out some more though, it does feel a bit underdeveloped but then again, that's fine in some cases. There's a strong enough idea here to carry the mix forward, and while more could have been done it didn't really have to be done. Take that as you will.

  10. I loved this song so much when the DKC2 project came out. Fun, bubbly, refreshing. The equivalent of a cold fizzy drink on a hot summers day. Can't sit through this and not have a little smile on my face.

My only gripe is the percussion. From the stretch between 2:35 to 3:05 or so, the percussion is really exposed and it's kind of jarring. The percussion just sort of overpowers everything else in that section, I wish it had sounded a bit less cluttered, but oh well! I do love the changeup after that, and didn't really mind when it for the rest of the mix, so it might just have been an issue with the levels in it. The track isn't really any worse for it, and is still awesome.

In other business, I do love how this mix exemplifies how great and varied vocal mixes can be. Hell, every vocal track on the project is great, but c'mon OCR! When are you gonna post backwards room to finish the set off?

  11. I agree with Jewbei and CN... this is not his best work. I'm pretty disappointed. There's no way I can sit down and listen to it all the way through. The melody does not work. I know he can do much better than this. I can't say I blame him though for several reasons.

He needs to stick to FFVII's "Fading Entity", FFX's "White Skies", and Super Metroid's "Jade Catacombs" style of tracks (his FFIV mixes were good too, but these other ones are better). I believe those are his BEST and I'll never stop listening to them. To me, he is one of the best artists in the world and I will always support his music.

Question: How much of "Fading Entity" is bLiNd though? That was a collab, I know liefo at least provided the guitar, which is a huge part of the reason that track is as amazing as it is.

Also, I would say that Golbez 'N Goblins is among his strongest stuff! #3 in my mind for his mixes, so that's pretty damn rockin'!

He is trying to get himself out there with different genres though so you have to notice his effort in trying something new. Many people are not respected when they change their style like Chris Cornell's Scream or Linkin Park's Minutes to Midnight albums. I will defend him in that arguement. Sometimes I also struggle with something new despite the fact of how open-minded I am about so many things in life....but still, I can't say I will ever enjoy this one. I do hear the hard work poured into this remix and that's what he's great at. I'm sure someday he'll give us something similar to White Skies so Jewbei and the rest of us can shut up. lol

Normally, I'd agree with you here. But of course, there's a few problems with this argument. Minutes to Midnight was Linkin Park ripping off U2's style, and doing it badly. Scream wasn't that bad, really.

Doing something new is pretty cool, and we can get behind artists expanding their fields of expertise. The community damn well celebrates it. Look at the overflow of comments commending people for making joke rap mixes! (Looking at you, Elixir! With intense Ire.)

Star Salzman is an amazing musician whose work does not usually get relegated to a particular style or genre, but is always top notch. When he released his follow up to the life-affirming "Forever until Tomorrow" there was a lot of pressure, so he just released something that was fun to do and that -he- loved.

The lesson that I am meandering towards is that the biggest thing in presenting music to a site like this is that you (the artist) loves it and puts it into their work.

As an aside, the thing about putting out more traditional trance-style tracks is that they don't feel like they are exploring any new territory. The production is up a bit, but structurally and such it sounds like Dream of Zeal, the Star Fox tracks, etc! So without the fun of exploration, we turn to the amount of love we can feel in the track.

And what I feel here is effort put into production and not really love. bLiNd has already proven that he can take sources that don't normally warrant it (J-E-N-O-V-A, Underwater Ambiance, Snow Woods) and adapt them into something electronic, cool, and fun to listen to. I want to see more of what he does with something he loves and adapts it into a genre -he- loves, or a genre he's never really done before! Imagine, bLiNd doing a Jazz-electronic fusion, or something else cool like that?

To give a "real world" example, Moby was highly unsuccessful until he released play, which used recordings of music that had a lot of love poured into it, and spent time putting those recordings to use in some fantastic electronic outings (If you haven't heard the Play album, fix that!)

You don't have to reinvent yourself or the formula to set the world on fire, but I'd love to hear your take on some new styles, see what your already extensive talents in production, arrangement, and simple musical sense can bring to the table in different styles!

  12. Ooh la la.

I'm in love with this mix. I get the same chills as when I first heard Jespyr Kid's ACII soundtrack - that blend of ethnic instrumentation with modern instruments, construction, and presentation is absolutely fantastic.

And might I add: I always loved DKR, more than mario Kart just for the OST. And the hover boat racers. Those were great fun.

Dude, keep at it! I hope you stick with your craft, get better with time, because in a little while you will be one of the big heavy hitters on this site. I for one am excited to see what comes next!

  13. Holy hell, 10 pages already? And I haven't chimed in to hate yet? D'awwwwwwwwww...

*listening* Hey, this sounds like da black market, and I liked that. Oh hey, it's by those dudes! No pixie to chime in with a 2 second clip to break up the sausage fest.

Umm..... So yeah. Why was this so hated? Rhymes with Elixir was terrible, this is actually good though. And the lyrics in this are A) Pants on head retarded, and B) Not at all game related.

Oh right. Production... that's important, eh?

This right here is the difference good production can make for a song. Turning a joke remix into something enjoyable to listen to, something that you can actually appreciate the music behind because everything is mixed well. The lyrics are awful, but the delivery is fantastic. I kinda wish Flik was more identifiable as Flik though. I miss that guy.... And even though it's a bunch of white guys rapping in a white manner (aka without soul) It's all mixed properly, sounds good, and is enjoyable. Did I mention this is enjoyable?

Oh, and really? This is profane? Like.... really? People don't understand profane I think. Profane is what is not the widely accepted. And everyone I talk to, talks like this when they aren't in a job interview or talking to their boss.

So yeah. Good stuff guys :D Would have preferred to hear something more game related a la black market, but this will do.

  14. Per my earlier comment.

When I said "music snob" it was past 2 AM and I was starved for words to describe what I meant. The mustache and mime shirt thing was meant to mean that I didn't actually think those people were snobbish, just more... art house? I'm very much that way about cinema, so hey!

The correct term should be "Music geeks."

Gario: Hmm, I suppose I could try to broaden my musical horizons, couldn't hurt eh?

  15. Well. Yeah. Huh.

That was interesting nonetheless. I suppose the only people that could "get" this are "music snobs." People that train in contemporary music, learn musical theory, and probably also wear berets and have tiny mustaches. And mime shirts. And circular black sunglasses. And are surrounded by a plume of cigarette smoke which they have in a long, ivory holder thing (don't smoke, what's it called?)

Obviously, I have nothing useful to say to this. I didn't really enjoy, appreciate, or even like it. Mostly because I don't "get" it. I am not plugged into the musical scene to study something like this, understand it, and so forth.

But I can appreciate that it was created, and posted. OCR is all about the furthering of appreciation and interpretation of music in video games, and that should include stuff that most people won't get. Intricate, unaccessible, and otherwise confusing music SHOULD be posted here because it furthers the cause, amirite? So yeah, even though I am lost without a melodic hook I can still appreciate the SIGNIFICANCE of the track.

    Cheers!

  16. Brave. Labyrinth is one of the weakest sources on the OST, but you take it on like a pro. Awesome to hear the drowning theme, I have fond memories of nearly killing sonic so I could get that experience you reference so well near the middle of the track; the intensity of drowning followed by the reprieve of finding an air bubble big enough to support the blue flash.

Usually I hate it when mixes meander around musically, but this does such a nice job, and the chippy world is so retro and lush, that I can't help but enjoy myself. Good on ya!

  17. This really reminds me of the Kaliedoscope (sp?) OST, similar sounds and feel to it, that sort of light-hearted playfulness that permeates that soundtrack. Yes, yes, I know it's the same guy, but it's just weird since AnSo's tracks are usually a fairly diverse lot.

What's with five seconds of silence at the end!?? Bahs, minor quip.

Yeah... What's with the need for samples? Granted, you work them in nicely, ie. the pipe sound effect, the coin hits, and even the death sound at the end. It's all very well executed from a technical, and even creative standpoint. But.... With how well done the rest of the track is, the samples seem to cheapen the mix as a whole for me. The nostalgia factor is high enough with this being such a well referenced song, something that exists in our collective gamer concience. Did you really have to toss in the samples?

With such a fun, breezy overhaul of the theme I would have expected that if anything, there would be an update to the jumping sounds, coin hits, etc. They wouldn't have stood out so much, to the point where they almost distract from an otherwise excellent take on a very worn, tired theme.

  18. Um..... yeah. While I am going to get slagged for not liking this, I'm still going to voice an opinion on it.

As excited as I was by the prospect of bLiNd doing more CT (even though his other CT mixes haven't been that great compared to his other stuff,) I was disappointed by this.

Maybe it's the fact that it's a boring genre, or the fact that even though the interpretation of the source is pretty good, the rest of the mix sounds like most of what else I've heard from the sightless one, but it's just... meh?

Sounds like snowbound crossed with... I dunno. One of the star fox remixes? Not only is it a sound you've done before, but one you've done better. At first I though that the age of the mix was probably the cause (even though Jade Catacombs is also old) but have no clue. It's not like this is from the formative years.

I don't feel the usual expansiveness in the sound choices, even from older stuff (White Skies kicks the pants off this in that department, and Jade Catacombs sticks a 10 inch stiletto down its throat and makes it beg to be whipped more,) or the magic of the original.

So, basically: This is well worth a direct post, is still a strong take on a well worn track, and is even original in that regard. But it's not a very good bLiNd mix. It's not a bad one, it's like I've been fed one of those good butterscotch pudding cups at a five star restaurant. I know that the pudding is good, and that I will enjoy it, and have even had a diet of just those pudding cups, but I know there are chefs that can do much better and have in the past.

Again, I know it's an older mix, but it's not ancient, or from the formative bLiNd. Yeah....

I guess it does come down to the genre. Music like this is meant to be played with the bassline amped up like crazy, and to be on Ecstacy dancing until cardiac arrest takes me.

  19. Aside from your solo, the entire track sounds samey from beginning to end. That might come with the territory, but it doesn't change the fact that I got a little bored with it.

Also, the sound design really does bother me. Everything feels clumped together, I wish there was some breathing space. It's fine to want to melt faces, but some of the playing could have dealt with being a bit more exposed, like the solo. I wish I could have had it a little bit more in the open, had it seem a bit more special other than just having it be louder and at a higher frequency.

Still, you managed to keep the energy up and there was nothing in particular that stood out as bad, so I enjoyed it well enough.

  20. I love how you've now twice taken a theme so ingrained in my conciousness as having some specific mood, and made it something much more subdued, and yet equally awesome. I reference of course your FFIV Calbrena mix.

Granted, you do go up-tempo, but really the intro section is what seals it for me.

Keep it up, we need more mixes on the site that completely detract from what we expect as far as mood and pacing are concerned.

  21. For the record: I dislike Randy Newman. He's got talent, and is creative enough, I just don't like the music he makes for the most part. Even if it is emotionally stirring.

Thus, I have an innate dislike of this track from a perspective of taste. Still, this is well executed, thoughtful, creative, and you are a really good singer for what you are doing! So it's not going on any of my playlists, but I still liked it enough to listen through, and feel a little bit warmer and fuzzier.
