  1. Just a minute ago a song popped into my head, and I'm thinking "what IS that awesome song? Must be from a movie trailer or something..." And of course I soon realized it was the song from this trailer (which I watched soon-ishly after the thread was posted). Normally trailer songs are completely forgettable, but this one's a cut above the norm. Great job!

Hah wow, that's... actually one of the highest compliments I've ever gotten for music! :-)

I just hope I luck out and get more work writing for this game, it has a really inspiring setting and "world". I even liked the cheesy voiceover, which most people seem to hate for some reason :-P

  2. Nah, just the trailer - Sascha Dikiciyan is doing the ingame music (http://www.myspace.com/sonicmayhemmusic). They sorta just randomly called me up one night and asked if I could do it in a week... took me a while to convince myself that they didn't call the wrong number by accident ;-)

But anyways, they are releasing monthly updates to the game, so there might be some slim hope of them asking me to do more stuff... who knows. Keep your fingers crossed!!

  3. Oh we can/should totally take some of the stuff out, I was just listing possibilities so we don't end up aimlessly standing around wondering what to do like last time ;)

But for example, the arcade is in the opposite direction from everything, and we could just go straight over to south street and eat lunch there instead of eating at the gallery's food court. We'd still go down there to get tokens (and visit comic folks?) though, but yeah we can totally x out the arcade and even olde city.

If we really want some arcade-ish funtimez, one of y'all can bring your Wii and some games, I can bring my gamebridge and some PS2 stuff, and we can play on two screens at once over at Andy's (his TV and his comp). Any Wii-having volunteers?

And who needs to stay somewhere overnight?

  4. Ah true! Maybe we could keep it simple and meet at the same place as last time, on the western side near 15th and Market street (opposite the giant clothespin).

Or, we can be cool and meet in the center, and pretend like it's a gateway to four different worlds in the center of the universe!!!

  5. Hey y'all, so here's my idea -

We can congregate at city hall, it's super easy to find if you weren't here last time (I can go over directions later). So far it's looking like we'd start off at 12 noon, wait half an hour or so for people to show up, then head off.

Our first stop could be the gallery, which is kinda like an underground mall sorta thing. We'd just walk there, and along the way we can get SEPTA (our subway/bus system) tokens/daypasses from the transit store. If hungry ---> Eat at food court. We can also meet up with the Wizard World folks, it's just around the corner at the convention center. Maybe you guys could catch lunch with us?

After that we can take the subway down to Old City, which is kind of like the historical district and stuff. Supposedly the oldest continually-inhabited area in the country, they apparently have yearly reenactments and open houses etc. It's a fun area to explore, and we can walk around to see stuff like the Liberty Bell, Ben Franklin's house, etc.

There's also a Dave & Busters arcade over on 325 Columbus, it's not terribly far of a walk north from Old City.

And from there, we can walk+bus over to South Street. It's kind of the fun / touristy center of Philly, and that's where we'll be forcefeeding you guys cheesesteaks and water ice. There's tons of cool shops there, especially if you're into weird bizarre morally-questionable stuff (like leather! :-)). There's also a big poster shop and other fun stuff. I reiterate, leather!

Any other ideas? And does everyone know how to get to City Hall?

  6. Also what's wondering me is the audiodemo material. Of course it is intentional to let it sound as loud and good as possible, but this really stinged my eye. 48kHz MP3 demos with the same loudness as most popsongs on the radio. To me it looks like you added additional mastering to your material.

Nope! :-) The demos specified as being "dry" have no reverb or processing whatsoever. That's the advantage of recording and sampling in 24-bit, from what I've experienced - things mix so much easier, and the I:S samples just "fit" really naturally in both small/acoustic and large orchestral mixes.

  7. Hey Compy, thanks for checkin' it out! Glad you liked the demos :-)

About the flanging in the Clang Ensemble, it's intentional and added in realtime within Kontakt. I liked the way that it altered the tone, especially in context. But, of course, you can always remove it from the effects rack. I haven't heard any complaints about it from customers yet (in fact it seems to be a favorite so far!), but in the event that people want something like that changed, I've set up an Impact: Steel forum on the site where people can post suggestions and I can upload updated patches. It's a sample library developed by a composer for composers, so I understand how different people can have wildly different tastes for stuff. ;-)

And well about the pricing, you are right that there's lots of other percussion libraries out there. What sets Impact: Steel apart though is that it has a unique soundset with over 70 different articulations, recorded in 24-bit and with up to 9 velocities and 3 round robin variations per hit. In fact, I own most of the libraries you've mentioned, and have used their metal hits extensively in my film scores before... but the fact that they weren't very multisampled or usable as individual instruments (as opposed to just sound menus) is why I recorded Impact: Steel in the first place. And in addition to just the hits, you also get several banks of evocative sweeps, textures, and giant hits. It's diverse but remains within the scope of a metallic sound world.

So my final thought? If you're looking for a general "survey" experience with percussive sounds, I'd strongly recommend Stormdrum or TrueStrike-2 / Stormdrum-2 (once they finally release it :P). They're several times more expensive, but they're full of tons and tons of diverse material across the board. However, if you're looking for something unique and evocative, and are attracted to shiny objects like I am, give Impact: Steel a shot. :-)

  8. Hey guys, I was wondering if there was some way to connect my PS2 to my computer's monitor? It's a Samsung SyncMaster 931b and has a digital port in addition to the typical analog monitor port. I also considered getting a TV tuner card, but supposedly that might have a lot of lag?

    Any thoughts? Thanks!
