  1. Honestly, it's not worth getting a pair of monitors unless you plan on spending $500+. There are some half decent ones under $500 but you're truly better off waiting until you can afford something that's worth keeping around for a while.

Weeeeell as someone who has had extended access to the likes of B&W 800/802/803/Nautilus etc, there is some truth in this, there is no comparison. But people have budgets (as I did when I bought my $200 pair).

What I would say is that you can get much better headphones then you can speakers on a budget.

  2. I'd say you could do most things you would ever want to do using a combination of Ableton and Logic. They have very complimentary features and focuses; good combination for most mac users.

I use Fostex PM0.4s and I think they're very solid for the price (about $190). Looking at various reviews for them, people seem to agree that compare well with slightly more expensive options.

I can't really say one is more important then the other without knowing what speakers you currently have though.

  3. It's for hiding and sadness.

I bet we missed out on a good 5+ claims so far due to it being hidden! When I talked to djp at MAG I said I didn't want to direct people to a hidden thread or recruit by hand for it like I did with ff1 and ff2 so I thought the Community thing would fly.

Well if we allow all un-approved projects in the community forum (no matter how likely they are to be approved) then people will just abuse the community as a resource. I know you mean well but rules is rules.

Just saying, if you look at it this way: You didn't loose 5+ claims by having it moved, you gained x claims by breaking the rules :P. Someone was recently banned for trying to siphon members of our community over to their website, so it does happen.

  4. Why did this get moved to recruit and collab? I was under the impression that recruiting the community would be good to go.. I don't want this thread hidden, especially now of all times. :/

It used to be allowed to start your project in community then move it to projects after gaining steam.

Now you start it in recruitment, and it moves to projects when it gets approved. Otherwise whats dat forum furrr?

  5. The best thing that you can do is find some way to perform your drum tracks instead of just mousing them in (MIDI keyboard or even qwerty input which some DAWs support).

    Dis^

Seriously, get a midi keyboard, and just jam along. Doesn't matter how terrible it sounds, you can quantise and normalize the volume later.

Also, draw inspiration (read: steal) from sweet-ass drummers.

For instance, I use a lot of adapted patterns in the styles of Gavin Harrison and Mike Portnoy in my rock drums as they are my favourite drummers. Just do some speculative viewing of the styles of music you want, find something that makes your jaw drop. Then learn why it does!

  6. Oh, something is happening with the album that soon?

Ack, wish I knew about it beforehand, I'd have finished my other track for you. Could still finish it soon (have been working on it on and off), but at this point I don't know if you'd be taking it, if you're past the encoding stage of things.

I will finish it either way, regardless, but it'd still be cool as an addition to the album.

It's not the whole album, just something cool that was supposed to be a christmas present.

  7. You can tell from the title that this is going to be testing out our 'medley' standards more then anything.

First off: props for playing all these instruments. I absolutely love the french horn, and you're making me happy pants with it.

A few minutes into this and I'm already 100% sure that this will be rejected, but please don't go away thinking it's because there's anything particularly bad about it. Its completely down to the fact that putting all the songs one after another isn't the sort of rearrangement that ocr is looking for. Whilst there are some sections where you've done a bit of theme weaving pretty well, the majority of the track is 'theme A, transition, theme B, transitionn' etc.

So yeah, don't feel bad about this getting a no. It's just the nature of the arrangement. In fact, you shouldn't feel bad about it anyway because you already have 100k youtube views. What do you need us for?

    NO

  8. Really classy. Great decision to get the live violin in there. The groove is like half-way between ballad and porno but I can dig it. The production is ok, but the piece really shines during the suteki sections for me.

I think a possible source of NOs here is because of the way you've pieced together the structure of different sources as sections rather then trying to weave them together a bit more. It didn't bother me too much in the sense that it doesn't come off as a Nobuo medley.

Oh also that key-change is very eurovision, you get nil pois for that.

Despite this, you win a YES my friends.

  9. while I'm not a judge so I can't really answer for the judges, I will say this: The OCR submissions queue length is legendary, and by legendary I mean several months long. You might have to wait another two months before they get to your submissions.

The guys who do the inbox are quite far behind as the staff in general have had a lot to deal with lately. I don't see anything from September onwards in the queue so they probably just haven't got to it yet. I imagine sometime in the next two weeks we will have an inbox binge and the hilariously small queue will become hilariously large.
