  1. That would actually be REALLY neat, if they had an 8-bit brawl mode, where you could use the original iterations of each character in low-fi levels.

The only issue here is that some of the characters never had 8 bit iterations. What if they were to include Jill from Drill Dozer, Captain Olimar or Tom Nook in SSBB? There isn't an 8-bit sprite for them.

  2. On a totally unrelated topic, did anyone else notice that Tiny Kong is in the Diddy Kong Racing trailer for DS? My bet is that Conker was removed for reasons we all know, and she was added as his replacement.

  3. Because it just seems more than likely that they'll get the kid that does Tails' voice in the recent sonic games to do the voice for mallow.

    I JUST KNOW IT

That's an eerie thought. Tails could have been cool, but that whole preschooler voice is one of the many reasons why Sonic was best in 2D.

  4. I want to see Jill from Drill Dozer in SSBB.

That's what I've been saying since a million years ago.

Good. Finally someone who agrees. It was sad to see Drill Dozer go unrecognized and sell poorly. It was an excellent game. I think if they put her in SSBB, people will play the GBA game out of curiosity and realize just how excellent it is. It worked for the Ice Climbers. Very few poeple had played the game prior ro SSBM, and now I think I can say we've all at least tried it out.

  5. Custom Robo, Pikmin, Chibi Robo, and future franchises like hammer and that surviving game thingy for Wii.

You're right about all those except for Chibi Robo. Chibi Robo was a third party game, not produced or developed by Nintendo. The others are all, in fact, first-party games, made and or published by Nintendo, like you said.

I want to see Jill from Drill Dozer in SSBB.

  6. You DO realize of course, that most of the time, Krystal doesn't have the staff... Fox does. Krystal most likely will be in, and have the staff; but I want to see Fox use the staff, maybe as an alternate version of him (akin to Zero Suit Samus).

Just to put out a question... how many series do Nintendo own in a position similar to that of DK & Starfox? That is, how many more sortof-2nd-party series could they put in? I have a feeling that that's the first route they're gonna go to expand.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by that question, but this is where the Rare developed Dk and Fox games stand in terms of ownership.

Nintendo owns all properties and characters in every DK and Starfox game, even those developed by Rare. Even characters Rare created in association with DK or Starfox became the property of Nintendo. This is why you still see characters like Diddy and Krystal appearing in Cube games, with no credit given to Rare.

In fact, at the end of all the DK games and Starfox Adventures, you see the message after the credits, "All copyrights, including those of game, scenario, music, and program reserved by Nintendo."

I believe the same applies to Mallow and Geno, even though Square made them. They were created in association with Mario, and Geno even made a small cameo in Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga for GBA during a minigame. I think they're fair game for SSBB characters.

  7. So make Dr Mario just an alternate costume for Mario?

That would be pretty good, come to think of it. A few different iterations of Link in one character; pick a costume before the match. Saves space on the character select screen, each costume can be slightly different (OoT and TP Links, Samus and Zero Suit, etc).

I can guarantee that Zero Suit Samus won't be a clone of Samus. She uses a laser sword in the video and is incapable of rolling into a ball. She'll be a completely different character with new moves. She can't be a costume...

  8. I guess Donkey Kong Country stages are out of the question? Is that Rare territory? I'm not sure.

Nope, anything DK related is Nintendo's, including DKC. Anything created by Rareware associated with Donkey Kong or Starfox became the property of Nintendo, even if Rare moved elsewhere. So characters like K. Rool and Krystal are totally viable for SSBB, and I comletely expect to see them...

If that's the case, Gangplank Galleon would be awesome both in the stage design sense and the musical sense. If K. Rool is in it as a character, that'd be great. Otherwise they could integrate him into the background like what they did with Kraid on the Brinstar Depths level in SSB:M.

Hells yeah. I want to fight on Gangplank Galleon.

Meh, they already have Fox and Falco...they don't need Krystal too IMO. That'd be terrible, having Krystal in SSBB...who's next? Slippy? lol

Really? I think Krystal would be great. Give her the staff with its rocket boost, fire and ice abilities, and the earthquake, and she'd be awesome. But I agree, leave Slippy out.

  11. I'd say there's a good bet that that one/some of the Belmonts will be in the game (maybe even Dracula! You never know. They did put Gannondorf in SSBM) because I can't help but think that this stage is a Castlevania stage.

    CV.jpg

That looks like it could almost be a Fire Emblem stage to me. And Nintendo said that they haven't secured any other guest characters yet, so I doubt they'd go as far to alreadt make a Castlevania stage when it's uncertain as to whether or not they'll even get the characters in the game yet.

  12. I hope that those Super Attacks Mario, Link and Kirby do in the trailer will depend on that Smash Orb item and that it can be turned off. Otherwise, that could take a lot of skill out of the game... Though those moves DID look awesome.

  13. Just a slightly off-topic question. I have a DSL connectrion. I plan to have a Wii by the time SSBB is released. My question is: Will my DSL connection be fast enough to play SSBB online with no lag? Verizon says it's 786Kbps, but I know it never reaches that speed. But I did watch the Live E3 Feed at 300Kbps with no problems so I'm wondering if SSBB would be okay on my connection.

Y'know, I've wondered that myself. Typically, the online market consists of primarily shooters, racing games and the like, games in which timing isn't so critical. Smash Bros is so timing-heavy, that I'm wondering if ANY practical connection speed can handle it. Any lag whatsoever, and the game will suck online. We'll have to wait and see...

  14. I'm getting frustrated at a friend of mine who insists that the New Super Mario Bros. shouldn't have been a DS title. He says portable games are a waste and that Nintendo should have launched it as a Cube title.

Personally, I feel NSMB is a perfect fit for the DS. And besides, the handheld market is more open to side scrollers, as people in general (myself not included) don't want to pay 50 bucks for a 2D game anymore, no matter how fun it is.

And, if we did things that way, there'd never be any good handheld games, as games like Metroid Fusion, Pokemon, and Minish Cap would have been put on consoles and not on handhelds.

  15. Check out this review.

(It was released in Japan back in March)

Interesting...I'm gonna keep looking forward to it lol.

I dunno about the rest of you but I'm personally looking really forward to Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. I know a lot of people bitched about the cell-shaded art style, but I still liked Wind Waker (oh, AND despite the damn sailing). I guess the nice thing about PH is that it's gonna cut out the part of the sailing that made it bad: navigation. Just plotting the points on the map will streamline and make it not feel like work IMO :P. At any rate though, I'm gonna be picking up that title since it just looks like fun.

I am a bit skeptical about controling Link with the touch screen. Regardless of my worries I am going to get it anyway.

The navigation in the Wind Waker never bugged me, it was the time you spent doing nothing as your ship went aross the ocean. The game is still awesome though...

I was also skeptical of controlling Kirby with a touch screen, and that worked out wonderfully. And, remember, Nintendo has never produced a bad Zelda game. I still stand by that statement, though some 'tards bash Wind Waker.

  16. If I remember correctly, the tier system is established in Final Destination, without any items.

So, basically, how the game is not meant to be played.

All the items, all the arenas, that is how SSB are supposed to be played.

So what if a pokeball can change the course of a game, anyone can pick it up. Luck and randomness are what make SSB and SSBM great.

If you think a character is advantaged by a stage, find ways to counter it. If a character is too powerful with one item (mewtwo + lightsaber for example) react accordingly.

A true great player does not turn off item, he learns to react to them.

I totally agree. Final Destination creates a huge advantage for projectile-gifted characters, like Samus. A slower, poor-jumping character has a rough time on such a stage. Personally, I think Battlefield is a more balanced stage, and a heck of a lot more fun. Some characters just perform better on stages with actual obstacles.

  17. Top:

    Sheik

    Fox

    Marth

    Upper:

    Peach

    Falco

    C. Falcon

    Samus

    High:

    Jigglypuff

    Dr. Mario

    Ganondorf

    Mario

    Ice Climbers

    Mid:

    Luigi

    Link

    Roy

    DK

    Pikachu

    Zelda

    Low:

    Ness

    Young Link

    Yoshi

    Kirby

    Mr. Game & Watch

    Bowser

    Bottom:

    Mewtwo

    Pichu

Bold is my best characters, Italic is my brother's. How the hell is Falcon better than Ganondorf? And Jigglypuff on the High Tier?! And how the hell is Mewtwo on the lowest tier with Pichu? You should see my brother use him. He's crazy-good with Mewtwo.

Oi. Maybe I'm missing something here.

Personally, I hate the whole tier thing. Yeah, maybe certain characters are a hair easier to use than others once you master them, but these differences are minute.

Personally, I find that SSB is so much more fun when you're not ultra-competitive. When you've sat down to rank the characters in such a balanced game, you've lost the purpose of it.

  18. Stage Ideas!

Wouldn't it be interesting if there was some kind of underwater level? If not that at least one where at some points the level was above ground and at others it was below. It would make for an interesting game because things would be slower.

Another cool level would be one where you have to run from lava while fighthing people. It could get pretty intense.

I like it. Lava level reminds me of Neo Star from Kirby 64, complete with impending wall of molten doom. I hope to see many stages from each franchise, and don't make half the stages from Mario games! Augh!

I still say a Dr. Mario or Tetris level would be awesome. Play in a jar with falling pills or in a column of Tetris bolcks where the only way to die is up or down. Very cool...

  19. That gives me another idea. What if one of the items was a pitfall seed? Pitfall seeds can be buried in the ground and when they are they look like a fossil, but if you step over it you fall into a hole and are stuck there until you press a or something over and over again.

The same type of thing could happen in SSBB. You get the pitfall seed and then throw it down to make a trap. There would be some small indication that it's there so that it would be somewhat avoidable. Then if someone steps over it they would fall in and would have to press a button over and over again to get out. While stuck another fighter could come up and start beating the crap out of him.

Sounds pretty cool to me. :D

That might also be a nice Down + B attack for Nook himself. Have him set a pitfall down as a trap. He could only lay one at a time and those who stepped on it would be temporarily immobilized a la the results of DK's side + B Head Smash.

    ...Just a thought.

Oh, and RIDLEY MUST BE PLAYABLE! PLEASE!

That might get a little crazy unless they made some way to control it. If Nook could throw down as many seeds as he wanted to things would get pretty annoying and dumb. Maybe if he could only throw down one at a time it would work, but still that sounds a little cheap. I still think it would work better as an item.

That way it wouldn't be available all the time and would be less likely to become very cheap.

You're probably right. Though I'd very much like to see the Pitfall exclusively available to Nook, it'd probably be best as simply an item...

  20. Although id like to see what MIssingo would do >)

Probably freeze the game when trying to select him as a character.

Was Missingno ever given a tangible form? If I recall, he was a mess of pixels that occasionally would randomly evolve into Kangaskhan.

Well, at least we know what moves he'd use. He came with two (yes, two) Water Gun attacks and Pound...

    ...Not too exciting...

  22. Playing as Tom Nook would be very interesting, but I am not sure if I could exactly call him fighter material. Unless of course he got really pissed about you not paying your loan...

I don't think we will see Nook as a fighter in SSBB. Maybe he could run a store where you can buy costumes and stuff. Actually that might be a pretty cool idea...

Haha, I agree. There are plenty of thing Nook could use... axes, slingshots, shovels, etc. They could make a creative moveset for him and I would love to brawl in a serene little AC town.

..Oh and his specail sale day balloons make a good triple jump...
