Sweet funky (that middle segment!) ninja jam from the OG DJP that still hangs out on my playlist. I'm definitely a fan of that watery synth, as well as how the elements build on each other as the remix progresses. I agree with his own words that it ends a little abruptly, but it still sticks the landing. π₯·

OCR00089 - Phantasy Star IV "Millennial"
TheCD1 replied to Joe Redifer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Good track overall, but the instrumentation and/or levels in the first 28 or so seconds are a little too jarring whenever this randomly comes up in the playlist. I think the ending is also a little too abrupt. However, everything in the between is a killer energetic ride of a remix that continues to hold up. -

Another MkVaff banger that still holds up. Maybe because I'm not a traditional trance fan, but this is just so good. The layers, instruments, and progression throughout the remix are damnnn impressive at 24. ALMOST nails the ending too, but the fade out needed at least another 5 - 10 seconds to not sound abrupt to me. Minor issue overall though, stellar track. -
I'm a sucker for a haunting piano melody, but I agree that the guitar is what elevates the piece to STILL reside on my playlist. The only thing I'm not a fan of is the ending, it feels too abrupt in those last few seconds before the fade out. Doesn't ruin the remix or anything though, give it a listen!

Still enjoying this atmospheric energetic remix. Never played the game, but if just the music inspired this track then I must've missed out. I'm a fan of the chirp, although the usage can hit the borderline if you start to focus on it. Not really an issue when I'm just listening to my playlist though. That additional layer definitely adds to the lovely depth of the piece. -
Still a delightfully chilled groove that matches the title perfectly from the first moment to the last. I've never played the game, but so glad I took the time with this remix. Give the artist's other stuff a listen too!

Still listening in 2025! I'm much older than 2 and also love this short (too short!) song, a delight whenever it comes up on my playlist. A happy little earworm from early OCR!

First page goodness from DJP! Love this 80's action sci-fi theme song of a remix. It's the gift that keeps on giving almost 25 years later (and counting)! -
OCR00375 - Mega Man 2 "Soap and Water"
TheCD1 replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
4/4 keepers for me out the gate with this artist. Technical aspects aside, this track takes its time, different than the energetic pace of the previous remixes where I could see Mega Man battling through the level. This time it's almost like Bubble Man was taking time for some introspection (I'm just Bubble Man). The middle was an unexpected delight. Also, finally no one can say the ending was too abrupt! ππ -

Damn, June 2001 was a busy period for Steve Pordon! This is 3 for 3 for me in regards to the tracks being keepers, starting with Rigor. This track is personally an atmospheric delight (matching such a fantastic atmospheric game), taking me back to wondering around the Chrysler building for hours (I wish this track had been playing!). ππ -
OCR00365 - Moon Patrol "Mare Crisium"
TheCD1 replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Another solid remix (after Rigor Dance)! This track brings wackiness with the samples, which I think work well, but the unique energy is what keeps me coming back. Moon Patrol was not on my bingo card, nicely done! -
OCR00364 - Mega Man 2 "Stainless Steel"
TheCD1 replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Still a great remix, and another hit by the artist. The enrichment on the source tune really nails that action/desperation vibe that any Mega Man level should have. I actually don't have an issue with the ending. While it could have another 10-20 seconds after that final buildup, it's nowhere near the abruptness of Wind Shear (which I also really liked!) -
OCR00361 - Mega Man 8 "Frosty Delight"
TheCD1 replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
βοΈThe frosty sound and panning make this track a keeper for me. No idea what the vocal is from (surprised it's not Jump! Slide! or something), but I think it meshes well with the remix's chill energy. βοΈ -

Still a solid track that hangs out in my playlist. Another great remix from Scott Peeples, and after the fantastic Mysterious Groove which I still listen to regularly as well. Atmosphere and beats on point, love that πΉ -
Wow, looking back at these comments this track got some hate! I definitely like this track though, and continue to keep it on my playlist. While some "more in the know" may not think it's the most technically proficient remix (even for the early 2000s), for me the different aspects of this track bring together a solid fusion of 8-bit and electronic music. I'll admit, like DJP said it did take more than one listen through before the song clicked for me (it was a bit too busy for me initially). After that though, I've enjoyed this monster-hunting groove every time it's on. ππ‘οΈπͺπ°π§ββοΈπ

OCR00356 - Super Castlevania IV "House Party"
TheCD1 replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This track goes from 0 to funky instantly. I do agree that the frequencies dabble a bit high at times, but those occasions don't bring the track down. It was a solid effort when DJP was testing his new equipment back in the day, this remix still holds up on my playlist. π -
OCR00354 - Final Fantasy IV "Surface of the Moon"
TheCD1 replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Great source, and this remix is still a keeper. Weird, atmospheric, it's all been said before about this beauty from Mazedude. Don't take your whale to the moon without this. -
OCR00353 - Mega Man 2 "Bubble Man (wants to get) Funked Up"
TheCD1 replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
A nice and airy remix that has held up on my playlist. The first minute seems like it's going to go in a more energetic direction, but then the song settles into a nice ocean current that carries through the rest of the piece. ππ«§π«§π«§ -
OCR00350 - Blaster Master "Amphibian"
TheCD1 replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Ha, two remixes of this source within months of each other...and nothing since. I really enjoy Mazedude's take, and wRenchpilot's also holds up on my playlist (and then some!). Each bring their own unique style, and this one counters the former's slower groove with its own energetic quirkiness (plus I dig the croak!). There's definitely room for two badass Area 4 remixes in this world, we'll see if another challenger ever rises up out of the swamp. -
OCR00348 - Super Metroid "Maridia Mix"
TheCD1 replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
From beginning to end, rock-solid remix that's still just as good today (IMO). Love the energy, the atmosphere this song brings. Makes me want to dive back into the game. Classic!! -
A fun funky track that still holds up on my playlist. Infectious, although I admit I'm not a fan of the last 15 seconds before it ends. Doesn't ruin the song though, I'm a fan π

Not the flashiest mix, but it's still holding up on my playlist. I like the flute intro, and I think it brings in other elements appropriately. The quality of the remix might be a bit dated at this point, and it does end a little too soon, but I still like its atmosphere. Very nice combo with the name, flute and guitar.

OCR00340 - Mega Man 3 "Intro (injury Mix)"
TheCD1 replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
It took a few listens for this remix to win me over, but since then has held up on my playlist. I could easily see this being used as a replacement for the source if the game were remade. The intro's solid build-up had me thinking the mix's energy was going in one direction, but the artist's use of a deeper subtle intensity (IMO) was a good match for the hero's vulnerabilities and struggles he was about to undertake. I'll bet this 2001 track will continue to find fans. ππ -
OCR00338 - Ninja Gaiden "Devil's Mask"
TheCD1 replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I wasn't sure about it at first, as I'm not a huge techno fan. However, this mix quickly grew on me and still remains in my playlist. I really like the buildup of the song's atmosphere, as has been previously mentioned in other posts, and I also think the technical presentation is pretty damn solid for 2001. Hoping that part 4 (sequel to the OG part 3) gets made some day. -
OCR00336 - Secret of Mana "Fear of the Flava"
TheCD1 replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Another good remix from MkVaff that holds up on my playlist. I feel the "intro" takes a little too long (50 seconds) though, and I agree that the ending is wayyy too abrupt (even with MkVaff's style). Still a keeper!
