  1. Very strange. I'm not sure what the problem is but I can make educated guesses :-)

First, turn off send master sync on your Microsoft MIDI mapper.

Second, your buffer size is really really small. I would make it bigger by a lot. Try clicking on the Show Asio Panel and increasing the buffer size to something at least over ten. (I keep mine at ten but I've got a nice creative soundcard made specifically for the purpose so it can handle it. Most generic audio cards cannot.)

Third, where it says "Output" make sure that you've got your soundcard listed, not your device. I'm not sure why it's outputting to your USB device; you might want to click that bar and see if the proper device is selected.

    Good luck!

  2. I personally will hate you for the rest of your life, or for the rest of my life. Whichever ends first.

Ha! Fantastic! I've already got a fan :-D

What's the rule on using game sound FX? I really just want some of the "Pon Pon Pata Pon" drum and echo by the cute little eyeball things. Is there a rule against sound FX?

    Thanks guys,

  3. I hate to pull the baby out of the basket and ruin the surprise, but I've been wanting to remix a theme from the recently released game from the PSP called Patapon. Before I devote a lot of time and energy into my first submitted remix (yikes! The suspense!) I want to know if a game like Patapon for the PSP (nobody has done a PSP remix) and even then if it would be "socially acceptable" to remix a game only a few months old :-)

Does anyone know the answer? Mostly you great established remixers of whom I aspire to be :-)

EDIT: Also, can I use some sound effects from the game as long as they are used right?

    Thanks,

  4. I really like the beginning. I think you might blast the reverb more on the piano. I think that would really give the piano a lot more.... just... more of it :-) The percussion is okay but really light, you might want to emphasize that a little more, along with the bass. Overall, it's a pretty solid mix and definitely a great reworking of the material. You did a fantastic job. Congrats!

  5. I just threw down a little bit of money for FL's soundfont player. It was worth it just for the drag and dropping of soundfonts :)

I used academicsuperstore.com and went ahead and bought the XXL edition. Let me tell you; I love the built in FL soundfont player. I use it all the time. If you do find out that it doesn't work, you just might want to get the FL version because 1. Drag and drop man... fantastic!! 2. They sound great when integrated... and 3.... well, #3 was stolen

    Lol. Good luck with it.

  6. Hey! I'll check out your songs when I have the time (and when I'm not sitting in a college class :-) ) Post some of your ideas here... do you hvae chords or music? Maybe you humming a tune you'd like? Write some ideas here and let us know what you'd need help on... maybe everything? Or just production? Would you like someone to write your music and you sing? Etc.

Let me (and the rest of the community know). I'd personally be open to some collab :-)

  7. Yeah, no FLAC as of yet. I usually keep mine in WAV format (though I have a huge media drive intended for video so even a gig of space for a dozen WAVs is fine with me). Though when I put it on my laptop it goes to .ogg (cause it's the best). A lot of sound FX off of the freesound project are in FLAC and so I have to use Audacity (the world's best free sound editor) to convert to wav or mp3 first. If you do need to convert a FLAC, use Audacity (just google it).

  8. I would recommend becoming familiar with the randomizer. This, by all means, is no substitute for being a musician and like Darke explained, chording by the mouse still requires that you preform. But the randomizer helps :-) Select all the notes from the piano roll in a composition and go to the Tools -->Randomize or hit Alt+R. Deselect the "Patterns" and adjust the Vol and Seed arrows in the Levels window. This will help considerably in terms of adding realism. you might also try adding subtle "mistakes" in your composition as well, like the chello lead not being so synced and on beat.

However, your mix is pretty well done for a great beginning. It was rich in my headphones. The cello lead needs to be changed. I would use the cello from the incredible Squidfont soundtrack. Also... you may want to use some cymbol crashes like the ones found here:

I use these for my orchestral stuff too and it's a great transition point. Anyway, great start. I loved the pirates theme song, too! Congrats and good luck!

  9. Hey all... I'm building my way toward making my first OC remix submission (but as I've wanted to get better I haven't wanted to humiliate myself... yet :-P) I recently was messing around on the piano and discovered a nice jazz piece playing only black keys (except for the A) and considering I've taught myself how to play the piano and never really knew how to do jazz... I'm pretty proud of myself. I'd like you all to listen to this piece and give your comments and suggestions. It was done in FruityLoops Studio 7 XXL.

    A few notes:

    • The Piano is actually two soundfonts (Fazoli and Steinway grand pianos) played in unison with a Layer, each piano mapped with slightly different EQ and reverb settings to really fill out the piano. (The Fazoli tends to be tinny in the lows and the Steinway sounds great in the low but not on the high... so I mixed them)
    • The drums are done with two FPC instruments (cause I was too lazy to program in changes on each) and I've used major stereo separation on the hats and ride.
    • I didn't have any shakers, but I did have a small rainstick and a cup full of feed corn (secured with a sandwich bag and rubber band) so I recorded those live... with a little stereo separation...
    • And finally the bass is Sytrus, a modified Deep2 sound to fit to my liking. I'm using a compressor on it to give it punch. The bassline is my favorite. I discovered it while messing around, too :D

My major areas for help are loudness and stereo separation... sometimes it all muddles together too much, and as I've gotten a heck of a lot better, I'm still struggling with getting just the right amount of sound (nice and clear) with it not being too loud... Any suggestions?

Also... shakers? Do they sound okay? And the fadeout? Does that work? And certainly I need a better title :-)

Thanks a lot, everyone. You all are great!

  10. So let's say (I've wondered this myself) I have a violin and I want it to hold a note long but with varying intensity (like the player starts out soft with the bow and then begins to hammer it out), would I need to use the plugin to modify its intensity? Just raising and lowering the volume doesn't sound right :-) The affect I'm trying to achieve is just like the violins in the great Forerunner Mix (Alpha) at: http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01659/

Is there a way to do this?! Thanks!

  11. Lol... thanks guys for all your suggestions. Since all I wanted was a CHUG I borrowed a friend's guitar and spent a while breaking my fingers to the point they bled (I'm not a guitarist, only a pianist/drummer etc) and did a simple chugga. All I needed was a filler in the low end. The resulting product was exactly what I wanted, though I couldn't do much more due to my crappy guitar skills. Though there is rumor that I'm buying a ukulele at Guitar Center since I know its chords better :D

If you guys do find a way to make a synth guitar work (or even a tut on Slayer) I'd love it. Thanks so much!!!

    P.S. A whole page arguing... wow 8-O
