  1. So apparently this is going to be a new anime at some point in the future. Don't know when, but it's on its way.

Any thoughts on the premise? I don't know if it's going to end up good or bad or what, but it's now on my radar, at least.

It's slated to air this Fall. It seems pretty interesting given that the entire premise is based around parodying the console war between Sega and Nintendo.

So for the fun part, how many of these parodies can you identify? Bear in mind only the top row is Sega and the rest are Nintendo.

  2. Wait this Aquarion EVOL is good? I watched like the first episode of the first Aquarion and it drove me nuts from how generic it was, and how creepy it was for the mechs to combine (Pilots should not be making those noises when their mechs combine.) Turned me off this show.

If you can give me a good reason to watch this new one I would be more than happy to check it out.

Rather than give one, I will instead link you to twenty.

But if you were turned off a show because of innuendo, this is probably not going to be the anime for you...

  3. Should I have watched the first Aquarion for this?

It's not really necessary - most people didn't. The original Aquarion is supposedly not that great. Fortunately, everything you need to know about it is covered in some form over the course of Aquarion EVOL so you'll never find yourself lost for not having seen the original.

  4. AKB0048 is pretty damned good. Combining moe idols, awesome mecha battles, singing, dancing, cyborgs, gynoids, and a variety of other things that should work together into a single anime where they actually end up working really well. It's also directed by the people behind Macross F and written by Kawamori (the mastermind behind the entire Macross franchise and Aquarion EVOL).

Speaking of Aquarion EVOL, since it's pretty much set as the best anime of 2012, if you haven't watched it you should go do so. Like now. Right now.

  5. I disagree completely. Just as one does not need to draw for a living to draw at a professional level, one does not need to make music for a living to be just as good as a professional musician.

    Professionalism != being a professional.

I prefer my original expectations for this thread so I'll contribute along those lines.

This barely classes as a video game myth, but rumour still has it that Gabriela Robin is secretly Kanno Yoko.

  6. The fact is, a lot of Japanese games don't do well in the western market, partially because they're not designed to appeal to it and also because of the ridiculous bias so many western gamers have built up against anything Japanese.

Heck, you need look no further than the Type-0 thread here on OCR to see what I'm talking about.

    p.s. Type-0 is actually awesome.

  7. I don't know where FMA ranks in the anime world

Quite high for the most part. Most sane people would rank it within their top 10, or top 20 at least. It's also the 2nd highest ranked anime on MAL (though MAL scores sometimes aren't the most trustworthy).

  8. I hate to get technical, but ヴィーor Revi is Levy.

also, love the new ending theme for Fairy Tail.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZssU2UjACw8

Except that the official (as chosen by the mangaka himself) romanisation is Levy, so any other possible choices are pretty much irrelevant.

Yes, the new ED is pretty nice.

p.s. The correct kana is レビィ

  9. While its true there are more moe type anime shows out there, you haven't seen some of the good shows that I think you might like.

Hidan no Aria (Aria the Scarlet Ammo)

    Lol.

    I'll give you that one.

Random question, but what made you decide that two loli fanservice anime would be a good choice of reccs for someone who just stated that they hated what moe had done to anime art? Deadman Wonderland would be a decent reccomendation, except that the manga is far more entertaining to read than the anime is to watch. Sure was an entertaining watch, but that doesn't stop it 'suffering' from an extremely moe-orientated artstyle.

Black Lagoon is a pretty sweet series.
Revy is still one of my favorite female protagonists, even years after I've watched/read it
Revy? you mean Revy from Fairy Tail?

There is no 'Revy' in Fairy Tail. There is however a 'Levy.'

  10. Congrats, you've made it to 4chan troll level status! Anything can be made to look bad if you pick and choose your comparison material.

Was there a particular reason why you didn't choose this, or this, or maybe even this?

But well, if you want to go back to the days when every male character had practically exactly the same superhuman level of abdominal muscle, that's fine too I guess... To each their own?

  11. Double post but I wanted to give some impressions from playing the closed beta these past couple of days.

    It's awesome. That is all.

To be more specific, combat and movement are extremely fluid (it easily rivals TERA's manouverability), customisation is awesome (as you probably already know if you've played around with the character creator which anyone can download regardless of beta status here. It plays much the same as PSP2, parties are easy to drop into and there's a lot of fun to be had with a balanced team of four.

The cash shop is currently limited to mostly superficial things, I'm not sure how the conversion rate of real money to Arks Cash is going to look, but the closed beta started with everyone at 1,000AC and most things only cost around 10AC (11AC to create a seconds character). Unfortunately, it looks like one of the superficial things you have to purchase with Arks Cash is your personal quarters for which you pay a rental fee (30AC per month). My room is horribly empty right now... the only thing it currently has is a plant pot in the middle of the room...

My only gripe so far is that the Japanese keep treating me as a filthy baka gaijin because I momentarily forgot it was a Japanese beta during character creation and gave myself a name in roman letters. Oh and I refused to comply with their demands to join the unofficial dedicated gaijin segregation server. They don't like that much either.

But screw them! They're not ALL bastards... I've had some decent conversations with a few of them.

Some screenshots (excuse the low graphics settings, I'm playing on a relatively low end, two year old gaming laptop at second lowest settings - it runs smoothly with good framerate even on shoddy hardware! :o)

  12. Might check out Mirai Nikki... sub recommendations?

You definitely should, it's a very good anime even if it can be a little slow at times. On subs, you don't really have much choice - [GotSpeed] are the only group that have released the whole series so far. Fortunately they're decent.

  13. Ya know, grimdark and deconstruction aside, I honestly really loved the show myself quite simply for the visuals.

SHAFT has always done really interesting and unique visuals. If you haven't already, you should check out the rest of their catalogue. The majority of it is very good.

  14. Madoka's popularity is for pretty much the same reason as Eva - it's a deconstruction of a popular and widespread genre. Not only that but for those of us who watched it not knowing what was to come (especially those of us who watched it during its original run), it started as a mundane Magical Girl anime and the transition to deconstruction was a huge shock which made it all the more entertaining to watch.

Most importantly, it's a deconstruction that took a genre that's become extremely cliche and added an element of 'realism' to the concept rather than leaving it all rainbows and sunshine. To be able to say 'what's wrong with a universe that isn't cold and dark' you can't have watched the entire PreCure franchise or similar. There's only so much sparkles and friendship that can be stomached before a change is required.

Why exactly shouldn't some series be grimdark? Unless your sole reason for watching anime is escapism, there's no reason why entertainment can't be had from intelligently thought out plots and twists where there are consequences for actions as opposed to superficial stories which lack the means to draw you in because there's never really any danger.

  15. I hope you guys are watching Space Bros and Sakamichi no Apollon this season. Both should cater at least somewhat to what I've learned of your tastes through interaction with this thread. The former has the feel of a typical 80s/90s anime, dealing with bros... and space... what more could you want? It's also seinen so there's no moe or shounen contamination in there.

The latter is once again a collaboration between the director and composer of Cowboy Bebop in the form of a Noitamina anime about highschoolers in the mid sixties setting up a jazz band. Admittedly, it's a josei anime (supposedly), but that's kinda irrelevant really at this point. Given that OCR is a music community, there's literally no reason not to at least check the anime out.
