  1. I've met up with a few people from the internet (online games or music forums similar to this), and was able to start just talking with them as if we'd known each other for quite a while--which, in a sense, we had, since we'd conversed many times before. This was always in a public place, but now I'd consider these folks my friends.

I absolutely love meeting new people, so I've never felt these situations were so awkward. In a couple of cases, though, I was the only one who felt that way--guess I'm just really outgoing or something, lol.

  2. Still listening, but my initial thought is...turn down a little of that high range on the master EQ. Could be your monitors (and have you broken 'em in yet?), but there's some nasty high frequencies sticking out to me.

That said, that's the only thing that's really sticking out to me. DIGGING that amazingly phat bassline. Nice beat, diggin' that. You might try adding a more obvious breakdown in there, since it's a club tune. Gotta give that crowd something to latch onto for the ride up, doncha know?

I suppose one more thing would be to turn that reversed clap / whip-sounding thing down a bit. Doesn't need to be quite so loud.

Other than that, I dig...a lot! If you're going to sub it to OCR, I'd suggest creating a radio edit or something, as full-fledged club tunes don't seem to go over all *that* well.

Any chance you could check out either or both of my WIPs? Links are in my signature.

  3. Oh no, a "[DAW #1] is superior to [DAW #2]" battle! I own 'em both (and am Apple certified with Logic 8) ), and while I currently favor FL, I'd get more into Logic if I had more than a 13" MacBook to run it on, lol.

As long as the music is good and the beats are phat, who cares what it was made with?

  4. Odd, I thought I'd clicked on the most recent WIP, when I posted the compression comment. Much better now, anyways! :?

I think it's a little better, reverb-wise, but you should never hear so much shimmer on a reverb. Ever hear a room that sounds like that? Okay, maybe you have, but did it sound good?

I guess I'm referring to both the High Cut and High Damping parameters. I don't know which reverb plugin you're using, but every reverb I've ever come across has had these parameters. Turn 'em way down, cuz that shimmer shouldn't stand out that badly. Add salt to taste. Let sit for half an hour to cool, then serve with a garnish.

  5. Hmm, I think you should back off on the master compressor. It's making the song sound overcompressed and much too loud. Give it some room to breathe! Yeah, wow, the more I listen to the song, the more that compressor has got to go. Sorry.

Also, my previous comment about the reverb on the shakers still stands. Turn down the high end on that reverb! It's making the high end all messy, too. The high damping function on the reverb should do the trick.

Not trying to be negative, but those are a couple things that are REALLY standing out to me.

Also, would you be willing to check either of my WIPs? The links are in my signature.

  6. Whoops! Didn't notice the new version, lol. Love the bass, that adds a lot to the song. My only other suggestion now would be to flesh out the percussion a little more, if you could. It's pretty repetitious, and could use some fills or something--with the latin theme, you might go with some extra percussion. Timbales, congas, whatever. Something to give it a little more body.

Also, the reverb on the perx could use some more high damping, IMO. Just a little too "bright" of a reverb sound, I think.

Other than that, and my previous length concern, I got nothin'. Cool stuff!

  7. First off, I love the total change in pace and atmosphere! That source tune is a bit hyper, whereas this is about as chilled as it gets. Maybe too chilled, to be honest--it's just screming "RnB" to me. Something like this, perhaps? Just a quickie beat and bassline I threw in there, but the song is just begging for a little more fullness.

Also, I think there's a stray frequency on that flute that could stand to be taken out, somewhere in the low mid. In addition, I think the piano's delay could stand to have the low cutoff raised, so that the delayed notes don't have the low mid of the main feed. Just to clean it up a bit.

One more thing, arrangement-wise, is that I'd personally say you could stand to shorten the arrangement just a touch. At least throw a few more changes in there, possibly.

That said, I dug this mix. Cool work!

  8. Well hey it's another WIP from me, except this one's a slightly more "finished" one. It's mainly a remix of the Runescape song "Dream," although it's got some of the Garden" theme in there too. Here is the MP3 file, and I await your thoughts! Thanks!

EDIT1: Updated the mix just a bit. http://flexstylemusic.com/downloads/misc/rsdream_beta2.mp3

EDIT2: Another update. Shorted the outro, adjusted the master EQ a bit. http://flexstylemusic.com/downloads/misc/rsdream_beta3.mp3 Getting close to done here, I think.

  9. It's true, I tried to make it clear that I was stating my opinion based on my personal preference. I'm less of a musician and more of an engineer; it's just the way I've been trained and have trained myself. After all, I hope to make a living (or at least part of one) out of mixing and mastering songs some day.

That said, I don't want to undermine the hard work that was definitely put into this! Props for getting the project done, to all involved!

  10. First off, I love the arrangement. Props for that, it's really nice! I think the mix has a few issues, though. From where I'm sitting and the system I'm on--which, granted, isn't truly right for critical listening, though it's all I've got--I love the bass, although the song's a bit muddy. I think the mix in general is a little overcompressed, and some of the sounds could use a little re-leveling and re-EQing. To be specific:

    - The porta lead that comes in at about :45 or so could use a little bit of midrange taken out of it, it's a tad harsh. Also, could use some low-mid reduction, too. Actually, that goes for most of the song, so maybe that's just a master EQ thing.

    - That saw arp that starts to make itself known at 2:20 or so could use some toning down in the high-mids, too.

I think a lot of issues would be solved with some low-mid re-EQing. Also, maybe changing that master compressor, too. It's pumping and sucking just a bit much in the wrong frequencies. Gotta let that awesome kick drum stand out!

Like I said, though, I absolutely LOVE the arrangement! Would you be interested in collaborating in the future, by chance? Hit me up via PM if you are.

  11. Well, as per a post in the "Requests" forum, I've started work on a remix of the intro theme from Dark Cloud 2. Mind you, I've never played the game (although it looks quite cool), but I liked the theme. Here's what I've got so far: http://flexstylemusic.com/downloads/misc/dc2intrormx.mp3

This is a very rough mix so far. I've got a lot of the sounds I want (very deadmau5-esque is what I'm aiming for), but I'm not at all satisfied with the arrangement. Any suggestions for any part of the song would be appreciated!

EDIT: Here's the source, if anyone cares for it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_QNJT24Dnw

    EDIT2: Updated mix. http://flexstylemusic.com/downloads/misc/dc2intrormxb2.mp3

EDIT3: http://flexstylemusic.com/downloads/misc/dc2intrormxb3.mp3 New kick drum, more mastering, a bit of EQ on the mau5pluck, and some re-programming of drums/percussion.

    EDIT4: http://flexstylemusic.com/downloads/misc/dc2intrormxb4.mp3 Piano intro. A little more arrangement--just a little.

  12. Alright, I've started work on a deadmau5-esque rendition of the intro song. I really like the original, as per that YouTube video, so hopefully I'll finish this one. We'll see.
