  1. Hehe thanks for the reply. I'm actually working on the production right now! The tamb seems to sound too dry, hollow, and loud. I turned it down a bit and also the timpani seemed to be a bit problematic so I did some toying around with the EQ on that.

I also redid 75% of the synth bass track and removed a dulcimer that accompanied the piano's bass in the early part of the song. It was the source of the muddying.

And speaking of the intro, I finally had the heart to change it up. It starts out the same but the part that leads into the up-beat stuff has been redone. I've been working with that intro for way too long and finally brought the production up on that!

    Update will be coming soon!

  2. this sounds more like a mashup than any remix. it wasnt too good in my opinion. the biggest suggestion if you want to go anywhere with this, is to re-create the theme yourself and mix with that. using the direct samples and chopping them wont give you the best results and often sounds messy. especially when u need to tweak the EQ, you couldnt do it for any individual instrument of the sample since its already rendered

  3. First of all... Merry Christmas!

Today's update has taken into consideration many of your recent suggestions (I tried my best to work through the holidays and shopping)

So some notable changes would be the addition of those "missing" bass frequencies. I noticed that just filtering them, or using a bass boost wasn't enough (and was causing some of the muddying). So to remedy that, I brought back and beefed up some of the bass strings I had playing.

I also continued the overhaul on some of the sections from the previous update. Additionally, I've been working on slight melodic changes to keep things interesting. One of those was the return of the pitch dive, which makes a subtle return during the break at 4:35.

Otherwise, not much has changed. I still am working on eliminating some more of the muddying sounds. I've found quite a few instruments playing in the same octave (like 3 basses) and they each carry some unecessary frequencies which I am in the process of filtering out. Oh, love the EQ.

Anyway, here's the update, and again, MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Feedback always wanted and always appreciated!

  4. sounds good so far.

production wise its nice but it needs some variation in instrumentation and needs some better climaxes. its main theme is very repetitive. it needs some better percussion too (it sounds a bit too weak at times)

also that tamborine seems a bit too sharp. try cutting out a little bit of the higher frequencies, it hurts my ears a bit

cant wait to hear what you have next

  5. Thanks for the replies XZero and Wolf!

Some things I did in this update:

    - Removed most of the reverb from the song

    - Choir samples slightly altered (still not humanized but thats not my concern right now)

    - Increased the bass freqencies. I had the EQ cut out some of the bass and lower frequencies because they seemed to be muddying up the song. Still feels kinda muddy because I have a 2 different synth basses playing most of the track

    - Increased the tempo -- THIS UPDATE DOESN'T WORK WITH THE BREAKDOWN DUE TO TEMPO/TIME DIFFERENCES

    - Overhauled 3 major sections of the song (not complete because the transitions aren't 100% smooth)

I'm posting this because I feel like I'm stuck and I know for a fact I'm SICK of hearing this song (its been 10 months!)

I'm relying on the listeners to help guide me! I need things to FIX because I want to finish and get this thing closer to submission soon!

    Thanks again OCR peoples :)

  6. Rev, you might hate me for throwing all these at you but I'm only doing it because I love what you have so far and I know how much it means to get some valuable feedback from listeners other than yourself.

Here's what I think you should look at:

    - Guitar sounds a bit too heavy at times when I feel it should sound a bit drier.

    - Pad in the background sometimes sounds a bit too overwhelming. Might need a freq. cut

    - Dire, Dire Docks plays immediately. I would either start it later, or play less notes at the start. To me, its slightly distracting from the main file select tune even though its in the background.

    - The detache/attacking strings at 1:40 could use a slight/gradual increase in volume to accompany the build up into the section at 1:49

    - Percussion seems to be weak at times and is easily drowned out. Also sounds kinda hollow.

These are just little thing's I'd change up but that's your call -- it's your work and I don't want to mess it up!

Otherwise the arrangement and creativity is excellent!

As always, I look forward to hearing future updates! :-D

  7. ...and here I was expecting a Dragon Age question!

The best suggestion I'd have for you is to download the demo of FL Studio and get tinkering.

    http://flstudio.image-line.com/documents/download.html

Not everyone around OCR played piano as a kid or is trained in musical theory. Some of us (like me) didn't get into music until high school or even later.

As Salluz said it's about the drive. If you really want to make this happen you need to take the first steps yourself. There's plenty of helpful people here that won't mind guiding you in the right direction with your music. :)!

This is some golden advice right here, Hawke.

I only started remixing about a year ago and before that I have no formal musical experience. Don't know how to play piano or anything. But I've gotten decent enough to attempt a remix of Dire, Dire Docks and learned a great amount about music just by experimenting and listening to other peoples work here. Check the thread in my signature and you can see my progress through the song!

I may not know the correct terminology for a musical technique but I do know how to use it if you explained it to me.

So my additional advice to you is to just play around with FL Studio; try re-making a song verbatim and slowly making changes here and there (like with chords, dynamics, temp, etc)

Before you know it, you'll be the greatest remixer of all time!

  8. Hey again everyone! I come with an update! 8-)

This update beefs up the second half of the song. The previous version to me had no energy and while it sounded nice, it felt it dragged on a bit. So I added some variation and excitement to this one.

I also found a problem in the previous version where the bass was playing and certain notes were panned to the right for no reason, which was the cause of my L/R balance problem that I couldn't figure out.

Changed a few instruments here and there and overall I think I'm done with the arrangement and song itself.

The one thing I will be doing before I finish this song is to go back and revisit the EQ. Some instruments don't seem to be playing the way I wanted them to. For instance, sometimes the crashes seem to be floating right in front of the mic, when they should be a little bit into the background.

I've also included a breakdown of my remix against the original source tune.

    5:52 -> 6:15 .................. B

As always, comments and feedback is GREATLY appreciated! :-D

NOTE: This breakdown ONLY APPLIES TO WIP #7.

NEWER VERSIONS HAVE TIME DIFFERENCES AND CANNOT BE FOLLOWED

  9. I don't like the intro as much only because it's pretty long, and that it doesn't quite match up to the beats of the song. it gets a bit muddy and weird to me but after g-man's little speech all is better.

IMO i would break up the g-man's speech a little instead of playing it continuously in its original way

  10. Oh wow! I like this latest version the best.

It's great to hear the progression of the track over the course of this thread.

    Thanks :)

I kept them up just for that purpose. I think it's fun to hear a song progress through the works, and I think its a great inspiration for new remixers because no song ever starts out sounding great -- it's feedback from listeners like you on OCR and many months of work that will turn a good track into a great one.

  11. This sounds amazing, but it's a bit hard for me to pick out the 2 themes later on in the song. Sounds almost like a complete original piece after the half way mark.

I feel that another great MM theme to incorporate in here, based on your style of remixing, would be the final hour theme

I'll definitely be giving more feedback later when I finally get enough rest and can think clearly :)
