  1. newsflash: something being done before doesn't mean that it is automatically bad; sometimes things can be good enough to warrant sequels that aren't complete overhauls

I'm getting kind of sick of all these half-cynic idiots talking about 'Nintendo rehash' while they get all giddy about Gears of fucking War 3 or another god damn Halo or one of the infinite rip-offs of Halo floating around

and don't even get me fucking started on god damn fucking Call of Duty

I'm excited for many of the sequels/franchise games at E3 this year, but I think I would rather play something I haven't played before. Kid Icarus: Uprising seems to offer something other than the original, but from what I saw of Donkey Kong Country Returns it seems largely unchanged. I still want to play it though, but not as much as I want to experience design ideas I've yet to play.

I'm not saying rehashes and sequels are "bad" games, but that new ideas excite me more.

  2. My biggest gripe with XIII is not the battle system. Neither is it the story. It's HOW the story is presented. You know something is wrong when you have to READ about what happened in that cutscene you just SAW in the codex/journal. :banghead:

  3. To be fair, we're never going to get to the point that mature and thought provoking topics are acceptable if we don't stop underestimating the audience. Are there plenty of people who wouldn't get the message behind a game like Six Days in Fallujah and not see past the gameplay? Yeah, there are a ton. There are also a ton of people who could watch a film trying to convey a similarly mature message, miss it entirely and either hate it outright or still enjoy it on other levels completely oblivious to any deeper meaning.

It's easy to say that we have a long way to go before the audience matures enough to catch up to what developers want to do, but I don't think that will happen at all if we don't start giving the audience more credit and tackle sensitive topics. I think we really need to start giving gamers more credit and also realize that even if the message only reaches 5% of the game's audience, it's a success. Those who got it might just be able to explain to others what they got from it and have them realize there was more to the game, and that there can be more layers to other games as well. Just because a lot of people might not get it is no reason to shy away from this stuff.

I agree, and I also think that the opinions conveyed on several gaming forums are not representative for the gaming community as a whole.

There is however a problem in comparing games to other mediums. Film has gotten pretty cheap and easy to make over the last decades, so it's not necessary to pump a lot of money into projects. Games like Six days in fallujah however, are still pretty expensive to make. I think we must look at the indie scene and the small developers to push the limits of the game medium. They almost HAVE to be unique and get attention to bring their game to a larger audience. And then, it's up to us gamers to support the small developers if we feel that they bring something new to the medium.

  4. Questions...

    1. Are you plugging your guitar straight into your interface? IE, there are no effects in between the guitar and your computer.

    2. What kind of guitar is it?

    3. Is your guitar close to anything like a CRT monitor or TV? Anything like that will cause a lot of interference.

    4. Have you tried another cable? The one your using could have a short.

If you're adjusting your input gain to max levels, you are going to get some ground floor noise. That's pretty normal. I typically record guitar with it maxing out at around -12dB to -10dB. It's good to leave yourself some head room.

    1. Yes. Straight into the interface. No effects at all.

    2. It's a Yamaha AES420 bought about 5-6 years ago.

    3. Well, not any CRT monitors, but two LCD monitors are pretty close. That's kinda unavoidable since I live in a 10m2 room atm. :?

    4. I've tried two other cables.

Even if the guitar is maxing out at those levels, I still get some significant signal. It's much more noticeable if I use some sort of VST amp or effect. If you think it would help you, I could probably record something.

  5. I've got some sort of problem with my electric guitar. Whenever I plug it into my line/mic/Hi-Z port and arm it to record, I get about -30dB of noise without playing a thing. That is after I have adjusted the input to almost match peak levels. In Reaper it looks like this:

Anyone have any idea what the problem might be?

EDIT: My soundcard is an E-mu 0404 USB 2.0 if anyone needed that info.

  6. I don't know about Beardfish or Zappa...

...but all of you definitely need to check out the other band, Pain of Salvation. They're like the next best thing. I never even saw them touring with DT so it was pretty fucking kick ass when I found out.

EDIT: Erm this is for this summer's Progressive Nation Tour for those who don't know

It's headed by DT and guests Beardfish, Zappa plays Zappa, and Pain of Salvation.

I actually enjoy them more than Dream Theater. I find their music more verstaile and emotional, and the lyrics vastly better. Definetly not for everyone though. I couldn't get into BE(one of their albums)before having heard it in it's entirety 5-10 times.

I will add you on PSN tomorrow.

I've ordered the game and a stick, but it hasn't arrived yet. I'm prepared to get my ass handed to me, as I've played little to none SF before.

  8. In response to my own question, it came out on PSN in Europe the same day Street Fighter 4 came out.

Way to go Sony, you do know how to completely balls-up what could have been your most doanloaded game on the Store, but nobody'll want a version of 2 taking up hard disk space when they have 4 to install, will they? I guess I'm just really annoyed because I could have saved €25 by getting 2THD instead of 4, but I only really have the hard drive space for 1 and not the other :(

I mean, I'm used to Sony repeatedly letting its ownerbase down, but this is just taking the biscuit.

I don't think it was up to Sony. Capcom was the reason for the late release. Also, Xbox 360 users in EU don't have it yet, if they ever will.
