  1. I can't believe no one has mentioned Okami yet. :dstrbd:

'cause it's awesome! Or at least it seemed so when I tried it in the store... it's still on my to-play stack.

Yeah I'm gonna add StarFox to the list with the same enthusiasm as glasfen:

    maybe Starfox too?

I'm not a shmup guy (sorry AnSo), and even though I do enjoy the game I don't think I'd keep replaying it if it weren't for the sweet soundtrack.

  2. Aw man this is cool. This review has taken me over an hour... I got so into this track I had to whip out my keyboard and plink along for a while.

This ain't trying to be a single, this is going for a mood: it shoots for that sneaky, suspenseful, and dangerous spy thing and nails it. Tight, restrained (like the song title says). And that sax is just downright sexy.

This is going on my dark, smokey bar room, poker night mix. Boss.

  3. Ha ha, you guys... here's what I read:

hey! listen to this! we already submitted this so it's not really a wip at all. but we wanted to let you hear it now so you don't have to wait until it's posted to shower us with praise. i also have a hot neighbor!

    kthxbye!

But I give, I'll feedback it, but only because halc said if this gets direct posted he'll be god, so I really don't want to get on his bad side.

This is infectious. I listened to it last night and found myself whistling it this morning (er, this afternoon) after I woke up. Listened to it a dozen times or so and it just gets better; I think the chiptuneness continues to grow on me like a leech or a nice toe fungus.

I'd speculate that if this gets judged, here might be some of the critiques:

-realistic percussion soundfonts might work better (esp the heavy hit that's usually every other beat and the cymbals when they come in) and they also might balance the chippy sounds with some realistic sounds

-4:30-4:58 is a lull; doesn't sound like anything new is being done here so the song would be tighter without this bit

Written in invisible ink so you don't have to read it if you don't want to!

But overall this is fantastic. Lots of variety in instrumentation, er chips, and alterations in the motifs to keep things fresh. Really liked the progressive layering of instruments throughout the track and the variety of sounds brought in for cameos (though wtf is that at 1:25-1:30, it's cool but what, did you put bees in a blender?). I thought the breakdown and then buildup were nice because they weren't done just to slow up the piece, they helped transition back to the first source tune used. Ending was so cool; the guitar was a nice touch.

    Awesome work guys.

halc - submit Marihana On My Mind! I'll keep bugging you until you do!

  4. yeah - don't forget that when a mix with six reviews gets another one, it moves into the '7' bracket. sounds really dumb, but it means that there's about 40 more reviews there than it originally looks like with basic subtraction.

The number of remixes with seven or fewer reviews cannot increase unless reviews magically vanish (or new remixes appear, but there have only been two since the previous post and both have more than seven reviews). Hence the joke.

So yeah, anyway good job all, we are making progress... math be damned.

    EDIT: link fixed so UNEDIT.

  5. This remix nearly brings me to tears, then it picks me right back up and ends with a flourish. It's delicate yet majestic, and the balance in instrumentation and in arrangement is simply marvelous. I've always been a sucker for the harp, so its entrance seals the deal for me. Though the first 2:20 is out-of-this world beautiful, the rest of the song also superb, and the melding of the two themes toward the end wraps things up nicely.

I understand the complaints of the transition after 3:00, but I don't mind it. I envision this being played in the closing scene of a ballet: perhaps a wedding as Dhsu mentioned, at 2:20 an entrance by possible antagonists who eventually reveal their approval of the occasion, at 3:15 some wistful remembrances of several prior adventures that took place with the guests on hand, a short procession at 4:22, and a closing starting at 4:50 with a fitting happily-ever-after retreat of the couple that somehow still leaves open the possibility for future adventures.

I'm no expert on orchestral works, to say the least, but I find what you have crafted here to be truly phenomenal.

    Thank you, Mr Barnaba.

  6. This is the album cut to beat all album cuts. If tracks from VotL were played on national radio (and gosh dangit they should be!), Rare Square probably would not get any airtime outside of AOR. This is one of those underappreciated songs that make an album possible: it can stand on its own and does so just fine but, just as importantly, it functions as the subdued glue that holds together the more ostentatious entries, lending balance and improving all the tracks around it.

No clear verse and chorus, just a swirling of strings and bells and horns with a constant buildup to an unresolved climax. It's ominous undertones and changing dynamics are gripping; by the end the listener is on the edge of his seat. Truly magnificent.

  7. I must have listened to this track a hundred times by now and it still sends chills down my spine. Maybe the source was a bit more brooding, but I think the sense of foreboding that was so critical to the original atmosphere is here just as strong as ever... the strings keep this track true to its roots. Insert a bit of determination with the drum attack, a helping of optimism with the lead synth, and some serious internal fire with the climactic guitar work and Cloud and company are ready to take on the world! No materia needed, just a little help from Suzumebachi, Sixto Sounds, and zircon!

To say VotL was chock full of hits is an understatement, and even amongst such excellence this song stands out. Everything here clicks for me: it's a well-balanced track that captures some central emotions of the game and, ultimately, makes me feel like I can overcome anything. As such: this is remixing, and music, at its finest.

  8. Alright DarkeSword, you got me. I agree with your definition and your example is most certainly ironic. And you're right, 'coincidental' works much better with the whole vg music thread bit. But to me, it is still darn ironic that Creaky Boards would accuse Coldplay of plagiarizing only to then retract this and say they were "inspired by" a vg track, since 'inspired by' can be a nice way of saying 'plagiarize'. I didn't lay out this part well at all in my previous posts, so even though this is part of what I was getting at, what I said earlier definitly wasn't ironic.

So, Satriani is suing Coldplay. Please resume discussion.

  9. The energy here is amazing. With the frenetic pacing, heavy backbeat, and mini-explosions of synth awesomeness (1:03, 2:20), I can't help but rock out. There's an understated intensity throughout, which is in no small part thanks to the ethereal quality of the pan flute that perfectly offsets the in-your-face synths. And the balance between each of the sections as well as the instrumental layering nicely tie everything together. Quality all-around.

This is one of those remixes that I can't listen to the source tune without immediately having to listen to the remix afterward. It isn't in the same spirit as the original, since it replaces the depression and foreboding with ardor and enthusiasm, but djp makes it works for good and for awesome. Unless you have a hangover... then this might hurt.

  10. Well, the place it's being discussed really has nothing to do with irony. :|

Sure it does! Irony is, by definition, dependent upon context. It wouldn't be ironic to say "I'm burning up!" if it were hot outside. It was an unexpected turn for a plagiarism suit between two pop music groups to reduce to both tracks in question being inspired by vg music, especially since this is a vg music site (and since this thread had nothing to do with vg music yet somehow that's exactly where we ended up). It also lended credence to the influence of vg music in an unusual fashion. All this was unexpected to me, anyhow, and all very funny.

And yes, the deflection of this issue to vg music (instead of anyone admitting they were wrong in the accusation) would work just as well, but that's not ironic considering how egotistical some folks can be so I'd be saying "oh, sweet irony" sardonically. Maybe that's how I came off and that's what caused the confusion, but hey I guess this works just as well.

Alanis has confused the definition for our entire generation.

hahaha... though all those things were ironic the first time, yeah now that they've been beaten into the ground through repetition they shouldn't be ironic at all to anyone high school age or older.

So now that things are thoroughly off-topic, I'm going to throw in with The Pezman:

I don't care who may have stolen what, but honestly that last part of the video has the right idea. The two of them should just team up and produce a super mega rockin' version of the song, effectively uniting fans from both camps.

    YES!

  11. This is simply gorgeous. I'd stack this up against any of the professionally redone versions (the non-orchestral ones anyway), that's how much I like it. Maybe the intro is the best part, which reminds me more of FF7's Buried In The Snow than Ys' Feena (or it's just a truly creative take on Feena!), but the changes in instrumentation and pacing keep things more, not less, interesting throughout. Plus with the changeups, Mr Redifer manages to cover the entire source tune. My only stumbling block in the arrangement is that at 1:42 I keep expecting this to break into Xenogears' Omen, but that's my own problem :P.

My only real complaint is that I wish this remix didn't end with a held synth note, since it closes the track with an ominous feeling; but this is a minor thing. Beautiful song; thoroughly enjoyable.

  12. Very nifty. Any time someone can take an amazing source tune, take it in a wildly different direction, and still have a excellent result is worthy of commendation. I was lukewarm on this one at first, then the keyboard/bongo breakdown came in at 1:08. When the climax hit at 1:22 I was sold; even with all the new ideas he had crammed in this mix (speaking of, the WYWH-ish radio intro/transition is clutch), mp had managed to retain a sense of the fervor and dread expressed in the source... toned down just right so it's both powerful and catchy. Well done, sir.

EDIT: I found the extended mix. Google "matt pollard awakening -edit" (or "matt pollard awakening extended latin"); yes, I did the obligatory facepalm for not thinking of "-edit" earlier. If you're curious, check it for the additional piano breakdown and the xylophone. It's not as polished though. I prefer the ocr-edited version... short and catchy = very addicting.

  13. How is that irony? :|

Topic of 'Satriani is suing Coldplay' has absolutely nothing to do with video game music. Yet it's posted in a video game music thread and somehow the whole thing comes back to video game music. Seemed unexpected and humorous to me. That's how I break it down.

BTW: I went against my gut instinct which told me that Coldplay's new album was bleck (not Bleck) so I should root against them. I don't hear it in the music: it's too different, at least in pacing and style, to be plagiarism. Inspiration perhaps. Plagiarism, nah.

  14. Stickied? Aw man, I didn't know this underdog review thing was in. I thought I was maverick. Now I'm a cliche. Dangit! I guess there's no choice now but to submit to the collective...

FTR I'm gonna keep reviewing awesome stuff with a definite slant towards the overlooked (there's an olr joke in here somewhere). This is a good cause, all jest aside. To arms!... er, reviews!

  15. Toejam and Earl.

The game could suck to quite a high degree and I would still play it.

Why, Sega, did you not put this on your Genesis best-of collection (for the PS2)? Why?!? Now I might never get to play it... legally...

    Final Fantasy VIII
    Final Fantasy VIII
    Final Fantasy VIII

    NOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooo...........

Rinoa will always have a special place in my heart. I still love her... wait I mean the game... um, er, you all just don't get it!

As the original poster stated, Top Gear 2. In fact, I am almost finishing a remix of it >_>.

Holy remix Batman! To the WIP forum!

EDIT: oh yeah, to add to the list, Ys (the first one).

  16. I would like to apologize for the idiocy of my last post; it was done under the influence of stupidity. I read it now and I feel like I owe the world a walk of shame for it. Well, aside from the Cheap Trick joke; I'm still proud of that.

I was enjoying the comparisons, they should continue! Enthusiastic bump!

    Here's mine, and I can't believe I didn't remember this until now.

    Exhibit A: Top Gear

    Exhibit B: Muse - Bliss

I'd say definitely inspired by, and not just with the arpeggios. Oh wait, I'm doing this backwards...

  17. So, like... video game music is pretty cool, ja? But can it carry a game? Yes!

I've actually gone back and replayed games simply because the music was so awesome I couldn't leave it alone. Simply listening to the soundtrack wouldn't cut it... I HAD to replay the game, where otherwise I would have left it in a closet shoebox.

I have a few that torment me so...

Top Gear 2 (which is still awesome)

Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest (which is not still awesome)

Sky Shark (which I still cannot beat)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 4: Turtles In Time (which... I guess outgrew the fighting game thing... sad, really.)

Anyone else suffer from this disease? What games ail you?

No doubt this has been done before, but I didn't see it in the thread history, so BAM! here it is (again).

  18. My goodness I love this mix. It's just so... dirty. And so seductive, so impulsive. And, oh what's this, it looks like Sally Albright has something to add: "oh ah-ah oh... ah, oh, oh god, oh, yes! yes! yes! yes! yes! yes! ah! oh! oh yes! yes! yes! oh, yes! yes! yes! yes! yes! yes! oh! oh, oh... oh god... oh..."

...well then. I must concur, though this remix is most certainly the real deal.

  19. RE MojoHamster: I want you... to want Ken!

RE Overcoat: don't click here. It's just too funny. (for the record i love our judges they are the greatest please don't ban me)

RE: Uematsu-haters: Celes --> Aeris, Compression Of Time --> Freya's Theme. But hey, who can fault the guy for stealing from himself? I do it all the time... sweet I just found forty bucks in a wallet!

And RE everyone with musical knowledge: I like to think the case is that I simply can't sing and not that I'm tone deaf, but I could be wrong... if the Pachelbel ranter isn't right I'm sorry for my ignorance. But I do not apologize for any derailing of this thread I may have caused because I've enjoyed every second of these videos!
