regular users can't make polls
And it wasn't in the budget.
make a helmet that holds the WII REMOTE ON YOUR HEAD.An added bonus would be using the infared sensor to track your head's movement. So how about a VR helmet with IR sensors, as well as a few on one or both hands? I, too, have thought about this leap in gaming for a while, but can't figure out how to incorporate movement without a controller, balance board, or treadmill. Maybe they'll just stick some brainwave sensors to our scalps or input into our brains (I can see the adds now: "Nintendo Mynd, apply directly to the cerebrum!")
tracking/capturing eye movementI like. Very nouveau-tech.

Video Games Live will be at the Greek Theatre (LA) on June 4th. There is a promo for presale here, but you need to get your tickets today!
This could be a good meet-up for West Coast OCR peeps.

I think you're on to something here... Is this going to be an orchestral piece?
I agree with NDN_Shadow about the samples, but I like how you have deconstructed the Starfox themes (and the Star Wars bit is just plain fun).

Street Fighter V with full body controls? The obesity rate would PLUMMET.
Hilarious.
Powerglove 4 LYFE. -
The part im most afraid of is the intro, its hard to merge it with the flow of this song T_TThe intro is really strange... feels like it doesn't fit.
Okay, the intro is different from the rest... but it doesn't sound too strained (to me, anyway), particularly since the same feel comes back later in the song. The parts are distinct but sufficiently related to flow into one another.
Granted, I don't have the knowledge to help with the technical aspects, but it sounds great! Also, I think ocremixfan makes some excellent points about originality and personality. All in all, I think you have a very mature mix at this point in time.
-
I would suggest adding in some more interpretation as well as percussion, or at least something percussion. It doesn't have too be hard-hitting, but I felt it was distinctly lacking in the percussive realm.
Agreed. In line with IsolinearMoogle's thinking, there are parts of the level where percussion enters. If you could fade in something catchy but relaxed and fade it out later, I think you'd keep the listener's interest subconsciously, and they would come away from the song thinking, "Wow, that was really chill but it had a great beat too." ...Something like that anyway.
I really like the improvisation around 3:13. That is what is missing from the rest of the mix. You could throw more variation in, sparingly, to break any monotony.
This is very nice, and not just because it's one of my favorite tracks from the game. Great work. Update?
Names:
Aquavescence
Hydrosonic Therapy
Dreams in Blue
(too bad submarine dream is already taken)

My pleasure. Always great to here an original take on a classic.
As far as percussion, what you have is sufficient. It seems that a lot of people either have very static percussion, or go way too far trying to be creative. I think you handle it well, considering the style of the song. There's a little percussive noise around 0:59 (marimba?) which I didn't pick up on at first but adds structure.
Now, if you were to repeat the overworld theme bit from 0:43 to 1:21 later in the song, I would suggest adding marching drum snare rolls as part of the background (maybe changed, more positive, or with more layers?) motif.
You've got a very nice mix going here.

Number nine... number nine...
...Ahem!
Veteran Gamer Opinion Poll #9
Gaming has come a long way since Pong and the advent of digital entertainment. I remember playing Sub Hunt and Ski on a green and black screen TRS-80. Those games loaded from cassette tapes. Then we got a NES and I graduated to games in color with controllers!
It seems that we are now at a point in the history of gaming where the major aesthetic obstacles of video and audio quality have been addressed. I mean, look at some of the 360 and PS3 games out there now (not to mention PCs)! Sure they're not 100% lifelike, but what's the point in getting any closer? You might as well go paintballing or join a live roleplayers' club. The main focus in immersion for this generation of consoles is the controller.
The Wiimote broke new ground for controllers with its motion-sensitivity. Now, whether you agree with waggling or not, this has become the new "it" for console gaming. But here's the question: What's next? What will define the next generation of gaming as the new immersive technology?
a) Virtual Reality helmets
the return of the Power Glove! (or something like it)
c) full-body motion capture
d) nothing, this is as far as it will go
e) something else (feel free to elaborate or invent!)
Vote and be heard! PM me for anything else.

Suh-weet. Awesome fusion of elements.
I don't have much experience with jpop/rock outside of Dragon Ash, Lareine, and The Pillows, but I think I need to add these guys to the roster. Great work!
-
You've been busy, huh, JH?
It's been a long time since I've played this game...
Treasure Hunt: Very chill. Needs a little more variation, but you've got a good base.
Grunty's Rocks: Fun. The drum changes are a little distracting but they might grow on me.
Asiatic Banjo: I didn't get much of an Asian feel but I like where you're headed.
Upward Spiral: Very nice style. A little repetetive halfway through, though.
Nice work. Could you post the source for these?
-
This is incredibly creative! I dig the opening and the contrast of upbeat melody to moody background harmony around the one minute mark. That soloing is so catchy and fresh!
Excellent work! Looking forward to more.

Are you recording the guitar and vocals in one shot? Or separately?
Thanks for the comments, (Ninten)Joe!
I'm actually recording the parts separately, which leads to a few timing problems. I hope to find my quality mics and use them to record simultaneously for a somewhat live, unplugged feel.
I've got some modifications up my sleeve and effects like reverb, which you mentioned, are definitely in my plans. Hopefully I'll have some time to work on the song this weekend. It's competing with about twenty other WIP projects I can't wait to start!

The last one was a bit more interesting than usual:
Veteran Gamer Opinion Poll #8
The demographics of gaming have changed since the 8-bit era. For many of us, old games can cause nostalgia, dredging up memories of velour and The A-Team. Then there is the newer generation, who are more familiar with 3D environments and in-game, licensed popular music. I think it would be interesting to know the age spread at OCR. That said,
1. I think that, overall, most gamers are:
a) older than I am
around the same age
c) younger than I am
and
2. most of the gamers I know are:
a) 12 years old or younger
between 13 and 18 years old
c) between 19 and 24 years old
d) 25 or older
Here are the responses:
1. I think that, overall, most gamers are:
a) older than I am - 1 vote (12.5%)
>>>>>>>>>>>>
around the same age - 6 votes (75%) WINNER!
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
c) younger than I am - 1 vote (12.5%)
>>>>>>>>>>>>
and
2. most of the gamers I know are:
a) 12 years old or younger - 0 votes
between 13 and 18 years old - 1 vote (12.5%)
>>>>>>>>>>>>
c) between 19 and 24 years old - 5.5 votes (69%)
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
d) 25 or older - 1.5 votes (18.5%)
>>>>>>>>>>>>
So these aren't really scientific results, only being 8 votes out of a possible 1,300 active users. Still, the results seem to point strongly to an older OCR and gamer community than I would have originally guessed.
Thanks to all the voters! New poll early next week. Have a great Easter weekend, all. I'm outta here!

There's a note in the very beginning on your vocals...it's a lower one, and the pitch isn't quite on.
<heh heh> I know which note you mean... Yeah, I need to re-record that bit. I'm getting back into singing after a long hiatus. On guitars, the rhythm work was recorded under different input conditions than the melody but I hope to fix that soon.
Do you plan on adding more parts to this? I think some strings, pads, and especially some bell tones would rock this song out like mad.I am definitely going to include a violin for the second melody and some soloing. I hadn't really considered pads or strings but you've got my imagination going now.
Thanks for the feedback! I really appreciate it.
-
I have to keep reminding myself that I'm not a teenager anymore >.<
Same here.
heh OCR is getting olderIs that good or bad?
Not much of a turn-out this time... I'll check back in a day or two before posting results. Thanks for replying.

It's based off the movie of the same name, the arcade version is much better and more of a beat-em-up.
Wow, I just read the movie description and I still don't know what to make of it!
Nice sig, by the way.

Did Pilotwings sell well on the N64?
1.12 million copies. I don't know how good that is. It seems to be on the low end for N64 games (using the same site), but so are a few of my other favorites!
And thanks, Liontamer!
-
I can't believe I didn't hear the flute tune before in your solos! That's just sweet.
The only problem I hear is a squeak at 3:50. Other than that, I doubt there's anything I can add which would help. Guitars are outstanding, balance and spread are fantastic (really gives one an earful), improvisation and use of the source are excellent... What more could the judges want? Great work.
-
No takers? Huh!
I think this mix should go into File A, for Awesome.
I can really appreciate that you jived up the melody to start things off with an original feel. The build-up is so mellow, but so vibrant and full. I love that the melody disappears. There's a new source tossed in around 1:30 but I can't figure it out (or is it soloing?).
So, yeah, it's a little short, and might do well with a few more interesting parts, but I think you've got a great mix here. You could totally amp things up with a high-energy (but same tempo) "bridge" of sorts around the two-minute mark, and then cool things off again, but it's quite enjoyable as is.

Yesterday, Game Informer posted an article on the Pilotwings franchise, trying to entice Nintendo to produce a Wii generation version. At the very end, they mention the style of music which should be included in a new rendition of the series, highlighting OCR's very own (and only Pilotwings mix) Midnight Altitude.
Congrats for the exposure, jcd!

Nice work tweaking things around. The only critiques I have are that the synth which harmonizes in places like 1:19 sounds a little off (maybe it's just me) and the drums at 2:15, 2:25, and 2:45 could use a little more variety (the rhythm is good, though). I love the breakdown at 1:25. Good update!
-
Okay, I feel dumb that I couldn't pick out the source before. -EDIT- Uh, wrong WIP! Sorry!
I really like the halty synth and the strength of the lead. Very nice.
-
What version of Tetris is the basis for your mix? Looking forward to it, regardless.
-
I'm thinking of adding a violin/fiddle part. Anyone play (besides Posu Yan/po!)? I would synth it but I'd prefer an organic sound.
Legend of Zelda Oracle of the Sun - Final Arrangement EQ/Mastering opinions...advice

Nope. This is the right direction at the right time. There are several Zelda overworld WIPs out right now (and many ReMixes), but this is the most stylistically divergent.
I totally agree. In that regard, this is on par with djpretzel's take on the Zelda Lullaby (in my opinion). More creativity, while remaining close to whatever source you choose, is something very special in a mix and really helps it stand out.
Looking forward to updates. Any way you could post a downloadable version?
