  1. It's really not all that hard. I don't know why you'd NEED a usb keyboard--all you'd really need for FL is your computer keyboard. Z to Period is one octave with sharps and flats, and then Q to P is another octave with sharps and flats.

    Soundfonts work wonders.

DmiHammer has a VSTi that has a steel drum on it. Put it in the C:\Program Files (x86)\VSTPlugins path on a Windows computer (Vista). Here it is!

Update on MediaFire/Tindeck. Not Youtube.

  2. I like the beat and the choir, but the rest is really just a track. I mean, it's a great concept and all, but maybe you should do something else with the actual theme. Like maybe recreate it with other instruments? This will help. You should try and recreate the steel drums for sure. They're really nice. And another thing, the choir is sometimes so far off key it made me want to turn it off. Try and fix that.

That beat is really good though.

PS. Youtube sucks quality down the ever-flushing toilet. Try using MediaFire (free), or Tindeck (also free).

  3. Production is the quality of sequencing, recording, performance, mixing, sound design, all that. it's contrasted with arrangement, which is how the source is used, the structure of the track, the harmonies, the rhythms, the choice of instrumentation, that stuff.

The problem with the drums is that they have a raw sampled acoustic sound to them, whereas the rest of the instrumentation (with the possible exception of the guitar) doesn't. It's not like it can't be done, it's just that it's a lot more work to make them fit... which they currently don't.

Sticking close to source is one thing, doing a midi rip is another... and remixing for ocr is somewhere between the former and something entirely different. It's a lot of fun to get to use the source in a different context. But you might need some more practice before you can do it, idunno. We'll see. Sound upgrades and minor creative alterations is a good way to learn.

Good luck with the collab. :)

Courtney's slow right now, but we have a track! It's gonna be a medley of the Underground Crateria and the Space Pirate themes.

It'll be good. If we ever get started.

Now, back to this song. I still don't know what you were talking about with the lead. I think it sounds fine.

And with the drums, how could I make them work? A different drum kit, maybe? More reverb to soften it? I just don't know.

Working on something with it right now where that flutey part goes synthy.

    It'll be good.

  4. i feel like a remix that is not close to its sorce is not much of a remix but thats me in my opinion.

    great mix

I was saying that something extra that's not "sourcey" might add to it.

The vibrato effects are really nice--they add a lot to the long notes, so that it's not just hanging there. Man, those percussion loops! Those are great! I've never heard anything like this on here.

Unfortunately, I cannot guarantee submission acceptance, but I've heard much, much worse that's actually been evaluated and accepted.

    Once again, keep it up!

  5. Sorry to be such a n00b, but "production?" What? I wanted to stay close to the source for this one, if that matters...

I don't hear what you're talking about with the lead.

What about the drums doesn't belong? I think they sound fine, but apparently nobody else does.

I probably won't continue this much longer unless I get a big idea. Altermentality and me are going to do a collaboration, so that's what we'll be working on primarily, if Courtney ever gets back to me on what track to do.

  6. FYI: this is a huge problem with mixing in Reason, and any time something sounds out of sync, it probably is. I can't see waveforms for anything I record. Please do bring these up! I've moved the sound a tiny bit earlier; let me know if that helps.

Which means, yes, version 3 is here. To build a sense of continuity, I've tried to move as many motifs as will sensibly fit onto the opposite side of the tempo change. Mainly this means more horns earlier and more piano later.

I've tried to have more bleed over the transition itself to make it less harsh, which is trickier than it sounds. I stole the beep beep beep trick from the Airbag/Paranoid Android transition in the bass, so let me know if that sounds stupid in this context.

Less reverb on everything, period. Less delay in many cases, too, in case that was compounding the problem. I also cut liberally from the high end on the slow bass.

And now I am going to take a break and search for hats in TF2.

P.S. None of the comments here have seemed at all harsh to me. It's been very constructive and helpful all around. Thanks again!

Better, but I still think that it could be a tad bit earlier. It could go either way.

  7. I like version 2, but at the beginning, the piano and guitar seem on different tempos, or in other words, the guitar comes in half way through a beat, making it sound weird. I guess if this was done on purpose, I'll stop complaining about it, but I think it'd be wise to do something about it. Don't get me wrong--I do like v2. But some parts (instruments, ADSR) of it weren't awesome to start with.

Keep working at it. And please believe me when I say I don't mean to sound harsh. That's just how I happen to sound. :)!!

  8. First of all, be sure to quote a source, so people can compare.

I like it, overall. I think that some of your instruments are a little too detuned, and they come in a little late for me, and unless that was done on purpose, it's something you might want to fix. I can't really think of anything to add.

At the 3:00 mark, I love that change. I support drastic/not so drastic changes in a song. I love it when that happens/people do that. But the guitar (I think that's what it is) seems a little too fake.

This sounds negative, but I really do like it. Just try to find a way to combine reviewer's comments into your own song.

    Good luck!
