  1. Hey everyone!

I'm not able to spend much time to check everything out so far as my liberty is almost up and I'm still here at Parris Island, but I'm finally a Marine after almost 5 months! I've gotten a bunch of updates from Amy during my stay here and relished hearing about stuff, although I've probably missed a crapton of stuff everyone has been doing during that time. The journey to becoming a Marine was long and at some times arduous. Pain was a regular tool of discipline, and discipline is a big part of the Marine Corps, moreso than any other military branch.

I didn't get a letter from Will (Dyne) for some strange reason, but I got Jade's letter - it's silly for me to respond to it in writing though seeing as I'm going to be back so soon and in my current platoon we never really got much free time to write letters anyway. I'll probably give some more thorough updates, including some tales of boot camp this weekend when I finally will get to use my own laptop on my own time again. For now, take this as a confirmation that all is well and I'll be back to tell more soon enough! (and check up on project statuses :) )

Congrats. As a reservist, you'll probably be insta-deployed as soon as you finish your post-basic training training.

/i deployed before you, nyah nyah

  2. Yeah the N64 vs PS1 debate, this is bringing me way back.

But back on topic, an $80 price cut is pretty nice. I'm interested in the 3D hardware enough that I ALMOST bought one at the launch price, but was waiting until some more software comes out (or a flashcart, whichever came first). I didn't think a price drop would come so soon but it makes sense considering the poor sales and upcoming Vita and it makes me much more likely to buy one in the near future.

Nintendo really did screw this one up though. If they would have launched the system with at least ONE killer first party app like a new Mario, F-Zero, or Zelda game and a $200 price tag, it might have been enough to get some players to pull themselves away from their DSs, but with that shitty launch what the hell were they thinking? It's like they didn't even care or think.

i haven't seen you forever if i wasn't in the middle east and you japan i'd fellate you

  3. I think there's been a significant change in the overall handheld electronics market since the rise of Apple, smartphones etc. A big portion of Nintendo's handheld demographic has been children. But now the parents of these children have become pretty savy on these things, so why buy a 3DS for their kid when they could buy them a more serious and practical device that also plays Angry Birds?

Makes you wonder what this means for Sony. Nintendo has always made very cost effective hardware, and they are more than capable of taking a financial hit like this. But Sony is obviously investing a lot into the Vita by both making it very powerful and selling it at a low price.

Phones will never replace handheld gaming devices. One reason and one reason only: the shitty controls.

  4. you had me until you started talking mario sports games

strictly in terms of game library though, the N64 was a much better system than the wii is

the jaggies made most anything remotely complex look like garbage, FFVII has more aesthetically pleasing character models than FFIX and that just shouldn't happen. the more detail added, the more mess created by the jaggyness

N64 might have lower res textures and often had to go a more simple route but I prefer a cleaner look regardless. I don't see how you can say objects were difficult to differentiate in N64 games by comparison, most of what's on screen at least retains its proper shape where zidanes face here looks like missingno

PS1 shot looks waaaaaaaaaaaay better to me. Look at the textures on the clothes; you can see fair amounts of ruffles and shit. What do you see on that bitches shirt? Nothing it's a gradient, there is no texture, except on her apron and sleeves.

Ugly as shit, makes it plain and unappealing.

  5. psx's in game graphics were typically much worse, the only thing that made it more impressive were pre-renders

both systems look pretty terrible when you take a step back from that era of course

PSX having worse graphics is subjective in a lot of cases. Do you prefer sharp IQ but jaggy edges, or blurry massive blobs of pixels on your TV screen?

The N64 should not have been as awful as it was. It had no reason to be.

  6. the sad thing is that the 3DS still doesn't interest me at all.

as for the apple comment...it would make sense, when you look at how they've rebranded themselves over the past 5-6 years it does scream "we want to be apple"

the N64 itself was good though, the playstation line was nintendo's blunder because it was supposed to be an SNES add on but they got greedy and backed out of the deal because they thought sony was getting too much

The N64 was an awful piece of hardware limited by extremely low memory (which is why textures are so blurry that you can rarely ever tell what anything is supposed to be) and, of course, carts.

How some companies managed to make the like 7 good games on that system alone is beyond me. There should have been 0 with that awful hardware.

  7. FF7 had bad graphics even when it was released. It only had CG movies that impressed people visually

also shariq, stop being such a nazi. this place used to be great before people had to walk on eggshells. you're the only one who cares, none of the other mods do. let people post. if things get a little OT it's fine, as long as it isn't completely derailed.

learn to step back and take stock before trying to insert your imaginary authority

  8. The HD Zelda Tech demo apparently had an interactive component; also it can be seen running through the WiiPad:

All in all, love the bump mapping and lighting effects. If the Zelda tech demos of the past are anything to go by in terms of the final product; then this will be nothing short of jaw-dropping.

if its the normal zelda formula, it'll probably be tired and boring. hoping skyward sword breathes life into a dead franchise.

  9. I bought my 360 arcade for like 300 in 2007, so no I don't think most consumers would go for a 400+ console out the gate. Ps3 and 360 prices came down fast.

PS3 prices stayed high for way too long, Sony kept believing their own hype that people would eventually wake up and think that $600 for a system was a good idea
