  1. I have (obviously) listened to my fair share of mixes of this source material, so I have a tendency to be underwhelmed; I thought this was gorgeous. I think it particularly gains it's identity during the passionate freestyle with the electric guitar towards the latter part of the arrangement.

Combining the delicate with the grunge is usually difficult for me to digest, but not this. It has a lot of heart. At the very least, it certainly has enough potential to be an OCR.

  2. I thought the finisher was pretty cool. Some interesting track selection too, I liked that. I was hoping some of the music would intertwine, or be repeated somehow in the next melody. The transitions were smooth enough, some seemed more abrupt than others. For example the music fade out after the first clock ticking, probably could have taken it's time. The clock sounds could have had a longer echo added to them before put in the mix to stretch between ticks and combat the silence.

  3. Well, I am absolutely stunned... in a bad way.

The Kingdom Hearts remixes approved for OCR are few and far between, and with tons of great source material (from the entire series) it baffles me. Granted I don't really keep up with the WIP sub-forum much, albeit I bet there has been some noteworthy stuff in there to be rejected (with good reason: standards).

It's obvious how this got approved, but I couldn't even finish listening to this. The quality of the recording, the instruments, all fine and dandy (nothing particularly special about the arrangement here either, granted the cello was introduced). I remember hearing a similar take on Hikari/S&C from Missy (an average mixer) a few years ago, but she actually just spliced the official English and Japanese renditions of the PlanetB remix together and the end result was - enjoyable.

At the risk of being rude, this just makes me sad. OCR hits its 10th year, has been met with some pro success, and we get a new KH mix! Unfortunately, this will not go on the playlist. The vocals ripped this song to shreds. The held note at the beginning was shaky, there were more than several instances where diotrans was not in tune, overpowered the music or didn't annunciate strongly. Also, the falsetto coupled with the guitar reminds me of a handful of volunteer praise and worship singers from my private school days.

In lieu of complaining anymore, I will just digest the fact that "they can't all be winners".

  4. Apologies for the immediate double-post, but I just wanted everyone to know I am Ben (singing voice). I more or less whipped this up to share with the community so you have a sample of my voice. I did the mixing, but Amos played the piano. I couldn't get all of the background noises from his performance weeded out, and I'm sorry about that. Enjoy and leave constructive criticism please.

  6. Who gives a deuce if "Schala's Theme" has been covered nearly a dozen times? Seriously, if it's good music, it needs to be posted. Considering the source material is pretty boss, I would continue to expect more remixes of this particular Chrono Trigger vein. I really hate coming to the forums trying to find decent input (outside the words of djpretzel and panel) just to read some lame review about how "someone's already remixed this song".

It holds no relevance to the artistry of the track, hard work of the remixer(s), and it turns the newer listeners away. So if you're going to 'boycott' remixes of a specific genre, game, or song title, just because it's been covered time and time again, keep it to yourself. Just to emphasize, saying something like, "nice remix, even though someone else heard this song and got inspired to remix it already" is not a valid, substantial review. We all want people to branch out and be creative, but finding the nuances in all of these same-source tracks should be enjoyed just as much.

This is, of coarse, just my two cents. I've been seeing that kind of hollow feedback here and there, and felt urged to write my thoughts. Throwing it out there; if you don't like it, you can throw it right back. You won't see me fawning over every Final Fantasy remix even though I'm a fan of Uematsu's work (like so many), but if a remix is credible, polished, and up-to-standard, then by god, it needs to be posted! Even if OCR eventually has 10,000 "One-Winged Angel" remixes, get over it.

As for "Back 2 Skala", you guys did an amazing job. She's officially uploaded to the iPhone and has been inspiring to run to during weight-training. Finding music that connects with your mind, body, and soul is nourishment in its own right. Keep it up, and if you haven't already come back into the remixing world, ambient, please do so soon.

  7. Sorry I can't drag on about the technical aspects of the mix, because I don't know what all's involved in the process. However, I'm an avid fan of Kingdom Hearts, and I've only been waiting FOREVER to see a remix here on the best videogame remix site ever! :o

You did justice to the Hollow Bastion track (one of my favorite because of it's haunting air) and nice moves with Destati. :D I adore that point in the game, and it's always nice to listen these remixes that take you back, and yet, at the same time, take you on a journey you've never experienced before.

I encourage you to do more. Hopefully you'll start a trend (and standard) for future KH OC remixes! Good work and thank you!
