  1. Definitely picking this up and going to get in on the pre-order before next month. Yes, it is a "tutti" orchestra lib... but if you already have the likes of EWQL and/or VSL to flesh out your orchestral pallete, this is a damn good addition. Composers I've talked to who have used it say it's simply amazing and very epic in sound. The price is rather strange though imo. A bit too expensive for 18GB of orchestral elements... still, very solid from the look and sound of it. Just pricey enough to keep the hobbyist / remixer away, and cheap enough for the professional to pick up on a whim... I have a feeling this lib will pay for itself 10 times over if you're composing professionally as it caters to that Hans Zimmer / Media Ventures sound that so many producers love. If you're looking for a cheaper alternative that sounds similar I would highly recommend String Essentials (http://www.soundsonline.com/String-Essentials-2nd-Edition-pr-BS-396.html).. it's my "go to" string lib and can sound amazing and symphobia like with the appropriate programming and convolution reverb. It also gets along well with EWQL.

  2. Hey everyone,

First and foremost, thank you all for your comments and opinions.. they are appreciated! I was definitely going for a film / game soundtrack feel.. so if that isn't your thing chances are you won't really enjoy what I've done here. That said, I was also going for a Hans Zimmer / media ventures vibe. Thanks to my liberal use of compression and over the top brass samples... most of you picked up on it :-). Magotrox... always nice to know another Delphine fan... you should keep an ear out for my next remix... something tells me you'll dig it. Thanks again everyone, I look forward to seeing what you all think of my next two tracks!

  3. Hmmm...

Good start for sure, here are a couple of things I noticed:

Far too much reverb.. the main theme is very difficult to make out.. at first I could have sworn it was MARS / Zimmers' Battle theme from Gladiator

Seems like one of your notes is off towards the end... just sounds a bit out of tune to me.

Nice start though... keep tweaking it!

And Awsomeman... my guess is he's using East West Quantum Leap Silver or Gold.

  4. Hmmmm.. I think some of you are looking way to deep into this, hence the reason you're having trouble think up an idea. It's a basic B movie slasher film concept... for inspiration I'd dig up mp3s from scores like Scream (Marco Beltrami), Urban Legend (Chris Young), The Hills Have Eyes (TomandAndy), Predator (Alan Silvestri), or even Halloween (John Carpenter) for more of a synth approach. Personally, I'm going for more of a big hollywood horror score with the same kind of orchestration heard in the scream series. Of course the cool thing about horror scores is you can really do anything from ambient to full blown orchestral to rock and have it fit. I figured it would be more of a challenge to restrict the competition to the horror genre, rather than the standard new age stuff. There's quite a few talented people lurking around here, I'd really like to hear what you guys come up with for this!

  5. So I thought I would follow up posting my Flashback Suite in the WIP section of the forum with a piece of music I composed for the Xbox 360 game I'm currently working on which is due to hit store shelves in August. The level set called for an 80s action score vibe.. so I immediately turned to the works of the late Jerry Goldsmith for inspiration. I not only wanted to capture his orchestration techniques but I thought it neccessary to add in synth sections fused with my orchestra... in the virtual hall with my orchestra as Goldsmith always did on many of his scores. Anyway, here it is.. a sneak peak as it were.. enjoy!

and for fun.. the rejected music for the same level:

  6. Thank you both for your comments! I really wanted to approach this project like I would approach scoring a film and not only give the music a very cinematic feel, but not stray too far from the source. That last scene in Flashback (if you guys have finished the game of course) is one that has always stuck with me, I really wanted to capture the sense of uncertainty in the end of the track... a sense of uncertainty that the original music just never really did (as it was too happy in my opinion). Thanks again!

  7. So I've put together a music cue for the CMC 9, you can download it here:

It's a suite of music with the following cues:

    Military State (Hunted)

    Into Hiding

The Long Wait ("I will come back for you")

    "The Long Wait"

    http://www.richdouglas.commanderbond..._Wait_CMC9.mp3

    Description / Backstory:

I could give you a bland normal description of what I was trying to accomplish, instead.. I'm going to give you the "found" journal entries of the main character of the story who has gone into hiding. But first, a short description about the world surrounding this piece of music. A military state has been declared due to the recent activist bombings around the metropolis, anyone who does not succomb to regular check ins is immediately guilty of treason and considered an enemy of the state. These outcasts have been forced to go into hiding deep in the depths of the city, away from sunlight, away from society, away from those they love. Their time for revenge and to retake society is coming, that day is today.

Journal Entries (3 entries that correspond with the cues in the suite of music):

    15th of May, 2042

    Day 100

After the military uprising on the surface, many of us have gone into hiding. It was awful my love... I tried to find you but couldnt. It was chaos, fires, looting, death were all around the few of us that were able to flee down here. The military, the soldiers of the DCC marched through anyone who stood in their way.

    21st of August, 2045

    Day 1108

My skin has become pale, the visions of what were... now dim. I must continue to retain my sanity. We are now pale memories of our former selves.. outcasts of the now militaristic society residing on the surface. I must not focus on the past, but I must focus on the future and how to correct the mistakes made and set right what is now wrong. Not a day goes by that I regret not being able to find you... I promise.. that day will come.. soon.

    15th of March, 2048

    Day 2191

Day of Light. Today is the day we will have our revenge, today is the day all outcasts are coming up to the surface to retake society. Today is the day that I will right my wrongs, take my revenge, and find you. I promise.. I will comeback for you. Today is ours.

    Enjoy!

  8. I thought I would list the original flashback cues I used in my suite for the curious:

You can find the chiptunes here:

    http://project2612.org/details.php?id=333

I used / reorchestrated Delphine Logo / Opening Theme / Menu Theme / Walking (loosly for a bassline) / and Descent Into The Tunnels.

Once again, you can download my Flashback: The Quest For Identity suite of music here:

    Enjoy!

  9. It's an interesting start, though I do have a few bits of criticism...

    1. I would invest in some better sample libs if you can. The sound you've got going could be fixed with some EQ and verb, but it will still sound a bit synthy (which isnt always a bad thing!)

    2. Speaking of reverb, convolution reverb would do wonders for this, look into that. There's a free convo reverb out there called SIR which isn't all half bad and will run in any host seqeuncer like cakewalk.

    3. Rather than programming every note, play some of the instruments by hand, it will give them some more life. Not every film score out there is played perfectly and without error... it adds character.. just listen to any number of Jerry Goldsmith scores.

    4. Counterpoint. You need some other instrumentation going on underneath the main themes you've got going. At the moment it's coming accross as a bit bland to me and needs some more instrument love.

    5. Rather than using a wind instrument for the lead motif, I would suggest a solo trumpet.. or maybe even a solo french horn. If played / programmed correctly with the correct articulation it could sound really killer.

Keep working on it, it sounds like its coming along though just needs some more power, counterpoint... and mastering.

  10. Hey everyone,

Just finished up a suite of music based on Flashback: The Quest For Identity recently, submitted it today, and thought I would unleash it on the community for all to hear. Here's the description:

Ever since I first played Flashback, it blew me away... and honestly is the reason I'm working in the game industry today. I'm an audio director for a THQ company and seeing as how we're about to wrap our current game up, Stuntman Ignition, I had a bit of spare time to put together this piece of music. It's not really a remix in the sense of

the word... more like a reworking of themes composed by Baudlot and Visserot with my own spin on orchestration. I basically approached this side project like i would scoring a next gen version of Flashback, a remake ... I thought it best to utilize their themes, but at the same time not only make them my own, but take that vibe and run with it to not only create my own motifs but stay in the same place soundwise / moodwise as the original. The main motif I added and carry throughout the suite is a lonely Duduk that serves as conrads theme, that and the 3 note synth lead line utilized in the game version of "Captured" that carries itself throughout as well. The end cue is definately a departure from the original... I hint at conrads theme once again, only to bring in some distant strings as he learns he'll be floating through space for a hell of a long time. So this suite of music basically goes in the same order as it would in game... here are the cues in the suite:

    Logos / Intro

    Menu (Conrads Theme)

    Jungle Navigation

    Descent Into The Tunnels

    Hypersleep / The End

I used a ton of different Virtual Instruments to create this piece... everything from Stormdrum, to Stylus RMX, Atmosphere, FM8, EWQL Gold, String Essentials, RA... tons of stuff. Overall, I'm really happy with how it turned out and hope that you guys feel the same way. Enjoy!
