  1. What. There is a problem in art with most people misunderstanding it. As someone earlier in the thread mentioned, art is about creative expression - there is no aspect of comparison in terms of what artform is better, although one might compare how well a work fares in conveying that message with another similar work. But subjective? How well something accomplishes it's aim isn't subjective - if you mean enjoyment of particular works of art is subjective, then yes, but subjective in achieving it's goal? I'd say no.

What I was trying to say (and I believe that most of the above posts illustrate my point perfectly) is that what different people do and don't consider art (or high art, if you really want to be specific) is completely arbitrary compared to different peoples opinions. Cerrax mentioned that Metal Gear Solid could be considered art, and even though I think it's one of the greatest series of anything ever, I don't agree with him. Does it matter? Ultimately, no; if everyone has different definitions of art, then labeling something as art is only a indicator of what you yourself consider it to be worth.

  2. Art is, at it's very core, totally subjective. What makes art art is the way it emotionally effects the viewer/listener/reader, and the effect on each person is totally unique (for the most part). Even so, just because someone has an emotional reaction to something doesn't make it art. Example: I saw "Pursuit of Happyness" in theaters, and I had a very tangible emotional reaction; yet I don't consider it art. However, I believe the movie "Collateral" is much more artsy, even though most people would disagree with me. The point I'm trying to make is: it doesn't matter what Inafune thinks about video games as art, the only person who can make that decision for me is me.

Also, just because something is sold doesn't make it not art. It just means the creators want a profit, which is completely separate from the whole art issue.

That being said, I don't believe there are many video games that can be considered art right now. In fact, I would say Shadow of the Colossus is the only game I've ever played that I would consider art (though keep in mind I have never played Ico or Okami or most other games that people consider arty). I do believe, however, that video games have an amazing potential to become art, and as a new medium, its potential has not been fully realized

  3. (since I don't think Sony themselves have actually MADE any games, they've had to rely on second party dev studios to do all the software work for them, while they just handle the licensing).

Uh, SCE? They did a little title called God of War. Also, Shadow of the Colossus, but I don't know if you've heard of those since they're such small titles, and not really all that remarkable.

  4. So... why is it that people bitch and complain about how kiddy Nintendo games are, but fucking orgasm over LittleBigPlanet like it's some sort of lesbian orgy?:banghead:

    Let's see...

    1. It's a game where little dolls run around.

    2. It's set in a world made up of toys, blocks and stylized cartoon drawings.

    3. The music is whimsical and sounds like it would fit in perfectly on an episode of Azumanga Daioh or one of those short-lived Disney cartoons you see on Family Channel.

I'm not seeing how this is any different. Where's Evilhead? He should have some interesting reasons how this is completely different and better.

Um, because LBP is driven almost completely by user created content, and is more of a game-creation tool than a game itself. The whole thing is run by a physics engine so the player can theoretically make anything, not just a platformer. The fact that it's cutesy is just because it goes well with the accessibility of the whole thing.

  5. Someone with a Persian background, hopefully. That would make sense, right?

Also, supposedly the game's director/creator doesn't want the movie to be a direct port of a game, but rather a re-imaging. I can't tell if that's good or bad though...

  6. My only problems with the PS3 so far is that its graphics capabilities seem limited by the 256 MB of RAM compared to the 360's 512 MB, the controller lacks rumble & is piss poor for FPS again, and the price (but it's good for those who want a hi-def movie player).

Actually, the PS3 and 360 both have 512 MB (though that seems odd to me when the standard for PC's is 2 Gigs). Also, apparently Sony and Immersion (the rumble guys) are friends now, so there might be rumble in the controller now. Though that might mean that people would have to go out and buy all new controllers, and games would have to add it. And the controller will still suck for shooters, but that's what PCs are for.

  7. Well, considering that the biggest barrier to entry in pretty much any market nowadays is price, it's not surprising that the Wii is outselling the PS3 like hotcakes. However, it should be noted that what the PS3 is going through right now is extremely similar to the conditions of the Xbox 360 (which did not sell as well as the PS3 during this period of it's life, by the way). Also, if you took a $400 Xbox 360, spent $100 for a wireless adapter and $120 (I think) for and HD-DVD player, then it would be more expensive then a PS3, and still have less features. So, all in all, I'd say the PS3 is doing just fine.

  8. I just wish whoever organizes next year's halftime show grows some testicles and books someone decent, indie rock is hot as fire right now, booking the Shins or Bloc Party or Deathcab or Modest Mouse or any indie act that's been in the mainstream would be sweet. Or maybe even a rapper, Rakim's stuff is pretty harmless for the most part, maybe Beastie Boys because a lot of their stuff isn't too offensive, maybe even Luda or someone like that.

If they got The Shins on the next superbowl halftime, I might actually care enought to watch it.

  9. I dunno, Hayter's face is a little too short. Then again, Mortenson's face is long...

IMO, Tom Cruise looks like Snake the most, but I really wouldn't want him to play snake. Really though, the only thing they need to get down for Snake is the voice.

Also, they totally need to refer to the audience at one point.

  10. After the N-Gage, I don't think Nintendo would be stupid enough to release a gaming phone. Of course, they do have enough mindless fanboys who will buy anything with the company's name on it. Even the iPhone is a more reasonable idea, and that isn't going to be nearly as successful as everyone thinks it's going to be. The only way Nintendo could pull a phone off is if they: a) made it compatible with GBA games, B) made it cheap and, c) had a good/slick design.

  11. But this time, it was the NFL that produced the halftime show (MTV had in 2004). Spokesman Greg Aiello said the league has received no complaints.

"We respect other opinions, but it takes quite a leap of the imagination to make a controversy of his performance," Aiello said. "It's a guitar."

Seems nobody else really thinks it's that bad either.

  12. Here's one I just came up with. Excuse the mediocrity, but in my defense, it's really hard to draw a good Kirby when the person he just swallowed has only a bald head and goatee as distinguishing characteristics

I'll give whoever gets this one a hundred thousand banana dollars.

  13. HDTV owner +1 here. Well, it's not mine, per se, but it is in my place of residence. Anyways, it's pretty old, like one of the first HD plasmas ever. I'm surprised it's held up for this long though. The colors and clarity are still as good as the day my dad bought it for a ridiculously inflated price. Of course, it only does 720i, but at this point I only use it to watch my favorite TV shows (all of which happen to be in HD, and none in 1080) so it doesn't rally matter.

  14. Well, that Specter guy has (had?) one, and the other poster kupernick (sp?) mentioned getting one at launch.

Actually, I never got one, the reason why is explained somewhere else that I'm too lazy to find. Mostly it was becasue Fry's was only selling them in $1100 bundle-packs.

  15. Well, my plan failed, and I didn't get one. Basically, my school starts at 8:30, and any electronics store/Target/Wal-Mart is more than 30 min away. Since all those stores open up at 8, my friend, who didn't have to go to school till 1, offered to get me one if I gave him 50 bucks up front and payed the $600 when he gave me the console. I agreed, not knowing which store he was going to. Well it turns out he went to Fry's, which as I noted earlier, is only selling their systems in $1100 bundle packs. Anyway, the money my friend brought with him could only cover one pack, so he bought one for himself (fucker). At least he gave me my $50 back though.

  16. Okay, so I'm in kinda a dellema here. I'm almost guaranteed to get a PS3 at launch, and my original plan was to keep it in all it's $600 glory. However, after reading about these problems for the first gen consoles, and after my good computer imploded; I've been wondering if I should sell it on ebay and use the cash toward a new/better computer. Help plz?

I doubt it will be defective since I wouldn't expect Sony to screw up another console; there are currently only a few lemons in Japan.

It really depends how much you care about the money, and if you will be able to afford another PS3 later. If you have a good income then selling it would be somewhat pointless. Of course I think the PS3 will be

an awesome console, so I would keep it personally, but that is just me.

It's not the money that I care about, it's the new comp. The thing is, if I can't sell the PS3 for more than $1,500 I don't know if it's worth the wait for a new PS3 when that cash will only put me 1/3 the way towards a cutting-edge PC ('cause I'm a PC gamer at heart, and I'm not gonna buy second rate hardware). So really, it depends on how much cash I get for selling it.

    EDIT:

According to Sony, there is -no- such thing as a free market, people. You're not even allowed to sell what you yourself PURCHASED, now.

    http://www.gamespot.com/news/6161842.html

That's right.. even selling your PS3 on eBay to the UK will get you personally shot down and shut down.

Wow, first Lik-Sang and now this. Sony really doesn't want Europe to get this thing.

  18. Since you liked my Solid Snake avatar, here are some more codec screen ones. Personally, I don't think they turned out as well, but it's not really my call.

LT: You're right, they didn't turn out as well! :-)

  19. I was totally suprised that Metal Gear has absolutly nothing. So I tried making an avatar out of the MGS codec screen, which resulted in this:

Comments? Suggestions? Give 'em to me.

EDIT: Streched the contrast, see if that helps

Oh, and I have more where that came from if you guys want it.

LT: I think the original pic looks fine without the added contrast. Nice work.
