  1. The slowdown is built into the programming. No amount of overclocking or modding will allow you to do anything about it. It's probably all in your head.

The slowdown is a killer for me, and the new classes don't really do anything for me, but I absolutely love the new cutscenes and retranslation. It's about damn time this stuff starting making sense.

That said, unless I get a friend I could regularly play against with wireless, I may just go back to the PS1 version. I dunno.

  2. Sorry, Didn't mean to be pretentious about it. I'm only saying that it's not shit.

Fair enough, but as a fellow writer, I'd caution against praising your own work very much (if at all). Letting other people acclaim (should we be so lucky) or criticize us gives us a much more realistic idea of the quality of our writing.

  3. Finished downloading/watching the movie with my little sister.

Simply beautiful. I am pleased to see it end with dignity and a reasonable degree of closure.

That said, I really don't want to see any sort of miniseries or movie spinoff, simply because it will lack the drive and vision that made Avatar unique, compelling, and capable of holding its own in a sea of mediocrity. The only reason I say this is because I suspect that the series was given the axe some time ago to allocate more money to slapstick shows geared toward the network's target audience. The only reason a spinoff would even be considered would be to cash in on the franchise with as little investment as possible, resulting in what I like to call a "Disney-derivative marketing bitch".

I'd rather Avatar end with its dignity intact than suffer that abuse. And for now, I can live that dream.

    Well done.

  4. I started a few fanfics a few years back, mostly as writing exercises to keep my craft sharp.

It's just that so much of the form is terrible. It's rife with inconsistent characterizations, Mary Sue original characters, and plagued with easily avoidable writing errors.

Good fanfics do exist, I've seen a couple, but they are truly few and far between.

  5. I never really thought the best part of EarthBound was the events of the actual story (which I found to be fairly standard JRPG material), or even the New Age Retro Hippies and finding hamburgers in trash cans and all that stuff that people always bring up.

No, the best stuff was things like the message which pops up if you try to use the Insignificant Item (a jab at completionist gamers), the literal "pixel hunt" in the desert, the "buy a house" subquest which ends badly thanks to the limitations of 2D perspective... the jokes which were more about the mechanics of RPGs and less about just being all wacky and different from the standard themes of most RPGs.

It seems like I rarely see people bring that aspect of the humor up, and I wonder if it tends to get missed or there's an issue with a disconnect between the game's target audience (people familiar with the conventions of Dragon Warrior-era RPGs) and people who are more recently playing the game for the first time (who might be more familiar with the conventions of post-FF7 RPGs.

Really, I wish someone would make a game which does for the post-FF7 era what EarthBound did for the Dragon Warrior era. I always picture a fight where the boss starts up some huge elaborate excessively long Ultimate Doomsday Spell animation, and you get sick of watching it and just walk up and kick him in the nuts.

    Go play God Hand, boy.

  6. Yeah, I knew that was coming, but I avoided it because it's an MGS4 spoiler for me to have to explain it.

Since you want to go that route:

[MGS4 spoiler]The rapid aging process doesn't begin until about 6-7 years after Sons of Liberty, and MGS2 takes place only 2 years after the first game.:whatevaa:

Snake had to take a nap after a run in with Vamp in MGS2, so I refute your statement that two years isn't enough to degrade his acrobatics.

And while we're on the subject, how many combat-oriented cutscenes did you see Snake in Sons of Liberty, exactly? You were around him for about a third of the game, if that. Ray didn't exactly give him much of an opportunity to do much.

SPOILERZLOL This doesn't have anything to do with MGS4's progression of Snake's Werner's Syndrome.

If you'll recall, people tell Snake at regular intervals that he's not aging well and looks old. He's aging at a constant rate, and I'd wager that those two years are enough to keep Snake from wanting to jump off of any more missiles. Werner's syndrome didn't just decide to kick in a couple years after Sons of Liberty. He's been getting older the whole time.[/sPOILOLERZ]

Let's face it, over-the-top action is a part of the MGS franchise. Let's not forget that EVA does a Goddamn BACKFLIP with her motorcycle in MGS3.

If you don't want to read the spoiler tags, then just trust me on this one: an age difference of two years between the first two games isn't going to suddenly break his ability to pull those stunts. Your argument still doesn't work, and Twin Snakes is still just as flawed in this regard as it was yesterday. So you're still wrong.

  7. Snake's character was retarded in Twin Snakes. He's not an acrobat. He's not jacked into the goddamn Matrix. He's a soldier. He has endurance, yes, but he's not capable of pulling off half the shit that goes on in Twin Snakes.

Snake can't do freakin' backflips, jump off of missiles, dodging bullets Matrix style, or any of that.

Snake's a goddamn super soldier. He shouldn't be able to get back up after half the shit he gets hit by, and you want to nitpick over some fucking action sequences? Jumping off a missile is just as stupid as being able to get back up after getting slammed by a tank round or razed by Vulcan Raven's machine gun. OR carrying around twelve different guns, or having nanomachines that make it so you don't have to eat.

Who knew someone was going to play the REALISM card in fucking METAL GEAR SOLID game.

  8. Is this a pantry? Because I see a lot of pots and kettles.

    Zing!

Also, The Hulk was absolute garbage. Why is this shit even a topic for debate? It's not possible to construct a meaningful argument that defends this movie that doesn't revolve around calling detractors "little boys" with "butthurt".
