Jr555
Hey everyone, I just signed up onto this sight tonight, although Ive been listening to your remixes for about a year now, and Im very excited to say that I feel like music has lead me to attempt to do a few remixes myself. Before I get started however, Id like to ask everyone their opinions on what would work best with regards to what I should select for gear. Money isnt an issue, and after looking at a few posts, Ive noticed that a few of you use FL Studio or Reason to do these remixes, conveniently, I have both . My main conflict with regards to how I want to go about getting some gear is weither I should buy a really nice Keyboard with a lot of nice samples, so I can just use a USB input into my laptop and record on Reason or FL from there, or if I should with something more software or recording related. Of course, this is also a good time to ask everyone what they personally use to write their remixes, and what they have used in the past. Its a pleasure to finally be signed onto this site, and I hope to get to know all of you eventually, Jesse
OverCoat
Hm! Like I say to everyone [or, most people] who ask how to start out, it depends on what you want to do musically! Also, what you're most comfortable doing. Since you already have reason, you already have a nice set of samples and synths. Work with that and see how you do. I would recommend getting a MIDI keyboard though, because I hate clicking in notes with mice. Some people are totally comfortable doing this, but I'll eventually get them over to my side. Oh yes, they will become mine...

Im sure the more I get into it, the more ideas and the more creatively aware Ill become, but for now Im very foreign to using Software and MIDI to remix and compose, actually, Im pretty new to Remixing in general as well, Ive listened to a fair bit of remixing, but its still something Im not entirely familiar with. Thanks for the Reply !
Yoozer
Money isnt an issue Money is -always- an issue . Ive noticed that a few of you use FL Studio or Reason to do these remixes, conveniently, I have both Then you must've read somewhere too that what you use doesn't matter as much as how you use it. Any software can handle VST plugins (well, except Reason of course), so the difference is mainly in the workflow. My main conflict with regards to how I want to go about getting some gear is weither I should buy a really nice Keyboard with a lot of nice samples, so I can just use a USB input into my laptop and record on Reason or FL from there The keyboards with the nice samples either 1) don't have USB or 2) use it only for MIDI information; e.g. no sound is transfered to the computer, only the notes you play. Reason or FL catches these and sends them further to the VST instrument (or the Reason rack instrument). or if I should with something more software or recording related. Depends entirely on what you're used to working with. It won't make something sound better automatically, but sometimes it's very nice to just practice without a computer screen. but for now Im very foreign to using Software and MIDI to remix and compose What's your background in terms of musical instruments? That could help us give you advice. but its still something Im not entirely familiar with. Oh, sure you are - "remixing" is nothing more than making music, nothing more, nothing less. The only difference is that you don't have to start from scratch with a melody or musical idea .

Okay well Ill try and go down the list on this one, thanks btw for the advice, very helpful Yes, I have heard what you mentioned before, of course, as I said, I havent spent a lot of time working with any particular program yet, so if some thinks that there is a definitively better program to switch to, I am all ears. Im not really opposed to practicing all the time with a computer screen in front of me. Okay, so my backround in music is that Ive been playing guitar for close to 9 years now, 8 of them I studied at the royal canadian conservatory, and in the last 4 years Ive been studying classical guitar. I play at a grade 6 level in classical, and have just over a grade 2 understanding of theory. Ive played electric bass for 3 bands that have gigged locally. Ive also been fiddling with keyboards since I was old enough to try and wake my parents up in the morning, as they had a keyboard in the room and thats what I was allowed to do when they didnt wanna get up. I also took violin for about a year, vocal lessons for about a year, Drum lessons for 2 years, and Ive been a huge gear nerd for the last 2 years. I have experience playing classical, acoustic, bass and electric guitars, Mandolin, Violin, Organ, Keyboard, Piano, Drums, and singing. My musical influences in general are typically Progressive Rock, Trance, Classical, and Easy Listening. I hope that helps, Thanks so much guys. Jr555
Thanks for the advice everyone, I went into the local music store today, and I ended up picking up an M-Audio Midi Controller, a Tascam Audio Interface, and Sonor cakewalk 7 Studio. Overall Im pretty happy with all of it, and it runs very smoothly on my laptop, which is nice. Thanks again, I look foreward to getting the opportunity to work with some of you !
