Microsoft Wavetable Synth vs. Windows Media Player

So I downloaded the Music Animation Machine and tried to play a MIDI through it. The default (and only) output was the Microsoft Wavetable Synth, which sounded bottom-of-the-barrel bad. I opened up Windows Media Player expecting the same, but it wasn't. It actually sounded like something it was probably supposed to, but I'd thought that WMP would use the Wavetable Synth. If not, what does it use and how can the MAM access it?

I'm just going to swing wildly here and hope I hit something. My guess would be that WMP is not using the same device to play back your midi as MS Wavetable Synth is. I would take a quick look at "Sounds and Audio Devices" in the control panel and see if there are any other devices available.
