Hey, guys... WOW, been gone for a long time, missed a lot, but it's good to be back :)

So I was playing some Butcher Bay yesterday and one question that's been bugging me for many months came up again: Riddick's voice sounds smoky and rough. So much that it's almost unnatural. The effect has also been used on almost any commercial there is, but I noticed it especially with this particular game:

Here's a little video for reference:

What effects have to be applied to a vocal sample for it to sound like that? Can you recommend any plugins or techniques to reproduce the effect?

Thanks in advance and again, it feels great to be back

I think it's more voice-acting skill and/or natural voice sound than post-processing. It sounds like he spoke really softly with his mouth very close to the mic. I think it would be hard to get that guttural sound if you spoke very loudly. Consistent volume would be achieved by compression, or by skillfully moving toward and away from the mic depending on how loudly you're speaking (or a combination of the two).

Its a hard technic i know from my acting workshops. You learn it from harrumphing.. at first it sounds like you want to burb while clearing your throat, but if you got the point you're able to refine the intensity.

I looked it up for you but i couldnt find the exact instructions.. just comparable keywords like "vocal fry" and "false chords"

Edit: Its important to mention that Voice Techniics using the larynx will tire your voice and you're gettin hoarsen very fast.
