New to Tower ownership - Reformatting and Driver assistance request

I recently purchased a tower from my friend who went to the Marines, and I want to reformat it and install Windows 7. The problem I have, is that I don't know what equipment I have on this computer, nor the drivers for them and where to obtain them.

I was wondering if anyone knew any way for me to able to find out info for that stuff so I can go on and reformat this and install Windows 7 on it.

You should try Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Device Manager and see what the names of the devices are under:

display adapters

network adapters

keyboards

mice and other pointing devices

sound, video, and game controllers

Make sure you get your network adapter drivers BEFORE you reformat. Also, Windows 7 has inherent generic driver support for a lot of hardware, but still, it's better to be safe.

Since I don't have the cash to get 7, I opted to do a clean install of Windows XP Black edition. Loving it so far.

too bad you couldn't get 7. it'll install the drivers for you, as long as w7 recognizes the board - which it always does.
