Trapnel
Hi everyone. I arranged an orchestra version of the Zero Speaks theme that I would like to submit for a contest at school. I'm a noob at this and to OCRemix and i'm not too good with mastering so any honest comments and advice will be much appreciated. Cyril the Wolf
Umm, well my first honest comment would be: Where's the orchestra? (A piano and a violin doesn't count as an orchestra) And the couple of times that you have upper strings... don't really fill it out much more. Secondly: The only time I really hear the theme in this as at all is the very end. I'm not even gonna comment on the mastering or sounds or whatever becuase the "arrangement" isn't really that cohesive. I have no idea what you were going for becuase I can't make heads or tails of this. What were you trying to emulate when you made this? I can't find any orchestral music reference for something in this style, and if its to be a piano concerto.... well it shouldn't be. I'm not trying to be harsh... just telling it like it is. Trapnel
thats one hell of a comment... but thanks for posting. i guess i should of gotten into more detail with this so... this is still a work in progress... as the post suggest... and what i meant was i was hoping to get it orchestra sounding... from what i got so far... to see if i can make it happen with some somewhat sad sounding noises so my mistake for not being more detailed and i guess your post helped out too so thank you. as for the melody... everything is from the original melody from beginning to end. i said earlier that this was from the "Zero Speaks Theme" and after reading your comment i found it on youtube and there was a comment on the video saying that the soundtrack was called "Variable X" i just went with the name of the file i downloaded. in the original score there are two melody sequences that make up the music. the one that was playing on the end of what i did was one and everything else was off the other melody. if you listen close everything is playing the same melody just some notes were cut off and in the beginning i took the second half of the piano part and had it playing the same time with the first half and some things were sped up. sorry for not describing everything just wanted to make it quick. XZero
Big Mega Man music fan here, so I'm very familiar with the source material. In my opinion, the whole thing sounds like an intro or a buildup to something huge, but then never takes off. Even if you're just relying on two instruments (piano and strings), your arrangement can still be powerful while remaining subtle. The bulk of the track strays so far from the source material, something that would ordinarily be fine for an intro, but by the time it gets back to it, you're basically done already. I would recommend shortening this to about 15 seconds, then really getting into the source material with the strings and piano varying things up. The samples aren't the best (very midi quality), but an improved arrangement can trump bad samples any time.
Trapnel
cool. thanks XZero. you're very right. i got a similar advice from the person who is collecting the music for the video games live album contest and you're right about the samples i really don't know too much about midi. i'm learning about all this stuff at school at the moment and i'm trying to get on the right track with this kind of art so any response will be appreciated. your comment was really helpful and i'll keep the last thing you said in mind from now on
