bustthenotes
Hey guys, this is my first official WIP thread here (I made sure to read all the stickies, so I believe this post is abiding by the rules, if not, lemme know). I just got an official copy of logic pro 9 (thanks mac for reducing the price like woah!) and garritan personal orchestra 4 (Thanks sony for buying them and increasing the price like woah!) and was really excited to get started on something. So I'm working on this remix, and learning logic, orchestral mixing and editing, and using garritan. Here's the link to what I have so far - http://soundcloud.com/bustthenotes/ff9-battle-remix-wip-2 It's still early in the mix, but any and all feedback is certainly welcome. I plan on going back over the entire piece to work on making each instrumental part sound as real as possible, so there are places where i know it's a bit synthy right now. What my current concerns are - I really liked my slightly A-tonal piano intro, and plan on incorporating it throughout the piece, but I'm wondering if maybe I had it drop out too early? Also, I'm realizing right now that I have essentially 3 build ups before we begin entering into the main theme (the third obviously isn't completed yet). Anyone think this is too much? Finally, I've been wracking my brain for a name... since it's orchestral i was thinking maybe something italian, like "Battaglia Allegro no. 1" (Battaglia being italian for battle... allegro referring to the BPM... and No. 1 because it's both a common naming convention in baroque-romantic pieces, and because the track is officially called "battle 1" I believe), but i feel like that name comes off a bit douche haha. Thanks for taking the time to drop by, I'll keep this thing updated .
Rozovian
This is a style we don't get a lot of on ocr. We really need more of this around here.

Thanks for taking the time to drop by, I'll keep this thing updated . I really like it! Especially the intro. The first two seconds (before the atonality prevails) sounds really stravinskian to me and I got really excited. ANYWAY, it's hard to judge on such a short clip - i want to hear more! I got a sort of clunky feeling (tempo-wise) from some of the sequencing... perhaps it could be helped by some percussion. I'm not saying quantise everything and lock it into strict tempo BUUUT some accented parts so that we can really feel the specific rhythms. Anyway, it's really good I want to hear more! Battaglia Allegro no.1 is good with me! I think your worries about length of sections etc. will be easier to answer once you've done more of it so we can get a sense of the bigger picture. Keep it up though.
bustthenotes
Thanks a lot for the reply guys . Hey Rozovian, just out of curiosity, is it the jazzy A-tonalish sound you're talking about, or were you meaning the orchestral work? And Calum; thanks . Yea I definitely had some influence from Stravinsky haha, glad it didn't go unnoticed. I'm really trying to figure out a way to make the rest sound a bit more like that. And the temper/rhythm is absolutely something I'm taking a look at, I feel/notice it too . UPDATE: I have spent countless more hours on this, and wish I had something to update ha. Given that this was my first project with logic and garritan, I made a mess of my file . That one file was 45ish tracks, and becoming unmanageable. So I started exporting things out and started a new project trying to consolidate... while doing so I had about a bajillion more ideas of how i wanted this to go down, and decided to re-do the opening, keeping the same piano, only turning it into a classical string quintet, to introduce a full orchestra as I went. The current plan involved me adding some minor African rhythm, and jazz percussion slowly, until I could actually justify a full orchestra with electric guitar at the climax (I have a brilliant friend who can easily record an amazing guitar part), which involved countless more hours of research, reading, trial and error... exc... exc.. only to get a result that to me sounds MUCH much... much... more synthy and generally annoying. one thing though, I'm going to take a 15-24 hour breather from this song haha. I need to gain perspective and a focus, and figure out what can work, and what can't. I'll probably go back to the original version already posted, and tweak it somehow. SOOOoooo disappointed that I can't get good solos from garritan so far... Actually, to be fair I may have just listened to this too many times to get a good feel for it. Can anyone tell me if this sounds as synthy to them as it does to me? http://soundcloud.com/bustthenotes/ff9-battle-quintet-attempt
Rozovian
Thanks a lot for the reply guys . Hey Rozovian, just out of curiosity, is it the jazzy A-tonalish sound you're talking about, or were you meaning the orchestral work? Can't it be both? I like both. I'm not surprised you ended up at a whole lot of tracks, I fell into that pitfall a few years ago and now consciously avoid adding a new instrument if an already used one will suffice. Then again, I don't do orchestral tracks a lot, so I don't have to have it realistic or anything. Not sure it helps, but previous versions of Logic let you put tracks into folders. Can't promise 9 has it, and can't promise it'll make things much easier to work with, but it's a thought.

Haven't figured out the folder thing yet, but I've now got everything organized regardless. UPDATE: Ugh... so I've had to export out all 50 some odd tracks, and each individual part of each track, and import it/organize it into a new project so I could change the setup in order to have complete control of the mix in Logic, as apposed to Garritan. I'm ditching the quintet version, and sticking with the original which I liked better. I've also started contracting some rhythm sections for this. I'm not using any loops, but making the beats from scratch using Garage Band's drum kit (which for the moment is all I have). I've got an African beat playing during the first interlude. I haven't started mixing the actual drum beat that fallows yet, just trying to establish it. I figured it would be important to begin adding the drums in order to make the electric guitar part that my friend will bust out fit better. It's actually been pretty interesting, I haven't spent much time making rhythms/beats before, so I actually fallowed some beginner drum tutorials, listened to some rock songs to dissect the drum parts, before i started trying to make a drum beat of my own. Not sure how effective it is at the moment. Either way, I haven't added more seconds really, but it's not actually mixed for the most part, and there is now some rhythm (which I'm still working on).
