How do I record what's happening on my screen?

In other words, I have a really awesome video wallpaper that I want to show off in those Post Your Desktop threads, but posting the video clip itself would pretty much defeat the purpose. So, how can I record a short clip of what's going on with my desktop, preferably with a full framerate?

Use Fraps or a similar program.

Fraps can record 2D GDI+? Since when?

I've always used Fraps (registered) under the assumption that it can only capture hardware streams, ergo stuff rendered in DirectDraw/Direct3D and OpenGL.
