I kind of learned both side by side but others will say you need to know how to read/play before you can write, which is a reasonable path. But I had fun just making blocks of shit because it sounded cool. At the same time though I learned how to play the piano, which helped me analyze more deeply how songs should sound, though it still took maybe 2 years to go from 0 musical experience to... well, I didn't totally suck by then Quote
