  1. Here's a cover of the Angry Video Game Nerd theme (yes, the song for the retro game reviewer at Cinemassacre.com). Probably one of the most ambitious covers of that song, this is in a retro blues/rock style with a shuffle rhythm. Kind of '70s rock, inspired by the Rolling Stones, '70s Aerosmith, Iggy Pop, etc.

It's basically finished, but I might do some small adjustments, and I'm keen to hear any kind of critique.

  2. Thanx a lot guys!!!

It should be added that this remix was never a really serious idea. I had the bassline and wanted to see if I could make a bit of a reggae parody. And then I thought about the tourist guide. In the end I tried to make the song as good as possible anyway, and I suppose it has a bit of my usual retro guitar oriented style.

Just gotta get my video editing skills up one notch now...

  3. Here's a kind of crazy reggae/dub version of Bubble Man's stage (stream link below).

Those of you who have heard my music before might have seen my acoustic live version on youtube (link

). I've taken the bass line from that one and expanded on it a lot in this new version, which also includes a bit of Zelda 2 and some inspiration from Super Mario Bros 3.

In addition, a major part of the song is a voice sample of a tourist guide for the Bob Marley Foundation in Jamaica, who's a bit of

    .

I have no plans to do an OCR submission of this song, but I'm hoping to make a youtube video out of it asap.

Anyway, enough of gibberish ... here's the song:

    All comments appreciated, as always!

  4. I hear ya. Far from everybody likes "jam" music, and even I prefer shorter to-the-point songs most of the time. But with this tune, I'm going for that loose jam style, and I'm not aiming for an OCRemix release anyway; it will probably be an album track in the future.

Actually, I was mostly concerned about the drums and bass, that they'd sound bad and/or not tight enough. So I'm really glad you liked that part. (I will try to beef up the bass a little and vary the drums enough.)

If anyone has differing opinions, I'd love to hear 'em.

  5. Maybe I should have emphasised that this is only the first 1/3 of the song. The intro is long and gradual and doesn't aspire to any quick commercial goals. :)

There'll be a lot more of the actual Cut Man material coming -- so far this WIP only sets the feel and mood of the song. So if you dig the music in it so far, I'm happy.

Still very happy to get more comments if ya'll have any.

  6. I like it! Very cool first remix!

Metal is very common in the remixing community, and it's not my favourite genre either, so I wasn't expecting a whole lot. But I liked the sound and atmosphere in this one. It sounds like you know your metal.

Drumming sounds very real and varied.

    Some criticisms:

The sound is a little shrill. Though I actually think low end is a little overrated in modern music -- and your remix does have a certain 80s thrash feeling -- I still want a little more fatness in this tune.

    Hihat is too high.

The ending is very abrupt and not very thought out.

    Only my opinions, of course.

  7. EDIT:

This song is now finished as a Cutman + Outrun song and has a new thread:

    http://ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?p=93097

    Hello folks,

Here's the beginnings of a remix of Cut Man's theme from Mega Man 1.

It's played on guitar, organ, drums (on the keyboard) and bongos, and it's all in a Santana-esque style, sort of a guitar jam, á la 1969...

The guitar and organ during the melody part will be replaced with something tighter, but at least it's in the right style.

    Most comments appreciated!

    Thanks in advance!

  8. What do you mean by "real" musical qualities?

Maybe I should have written "traditional" musical qualities. I meant that we're going to sound like a band doing songs arranged for a band, and not like a bunch of geeks replicating the original VGM notes on stage. We're going to put effort into making these songs funky and swinging, even danceable.

The list I made is not necessarily songs I like myself, they're just suggestions from the band members, and I just took the chance here to see what people's impressions are. Some of the songs -- such as Fire Man from MM1 -- already have arrangements ready, otherwise they might not be on the list.

I definitely don't think I'm late to the party with a band doing VGM music. What were you thinking, that we'd play live on stage on the OCR Forum? We're based in Uppsala, Sweden, and there's nobody here doing the same thing, it's not as if the market was saturated...

Thanks for the feedback and ideas!

Silver Surfer might be a possibility in the future, for sure, but we're going to put priority into more known songs in the beginning.

  9. I've recently formed a band that plays video game music. We consist of guitar, keyboard, bass and drums and don't really have an established style, except that we aim for "real" musical qualities as a band and do our own versions of more or less popular songs, so to speak.

Now, I'd love to hear your reactions on the following suggestions for songs to play live. Do you love/hate any of them more than others?

Any other songs you really would like a live band to do on stage?

    Starcraft - Terran Theme 1

    World of Warcraft Theme Song

    Phoenix Wright - Turnabout Sisters

    Chrono Trigger - World Revolution

  10. Sierra adventure games definitely has some great stuff. I loved the music in Space Quest 3 (composed by Supertramp drummer Bob Siebenberg) and other SQ games and also some of the ditties in the Police Quest and Larry games. Police Quest 4 has an awesome tune called "The Rainbow Café". Not very original, but great nontheless.

  11. Howdy,

Just wanted to tell ya'll that my new album with retro funk rock remixes of mostly NES songs, called 8-Bit Democracy, is available on CD if anyone is interested. It's a CDR with 14 songs (62 min) and has very nice artwork. :)

If you just wanna listen to the mp3's, most of the album is available for free download.

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum section -- couldn't really find the right place.

  12. Thank you kindly! Especially for that link, OverCoat.

However, I have no experience of using wave samples, other than pasting them by hand in Audition.

Does anybody have any tips for software (preferably VST) where I can load drum samples and play them on my keyboard (as I do with soundfonts through an SF2 player).

Or, can anyone suggest a good (free) drum loop program in which I can construct loops and fills from the wave samples?

  13. I've used soundfonts a lot, mostly for realistic sounding stuff. But I'll look for some more that might be interesting. I guess I'm mostly aiming for synthetic stuff rather than sampled-based, but the end sound is what matters.

MIDI does not make any sound. It is to audio what sheet music is to a CD - it tells you what to play, not how it sounds. The soundcard in your computer has the so-called General MIDI soundset (which is also sample-based).

I should have written that I don't use a sequencer. Obviously, I do use midi signals with my keyboard, but all my recordings are wave audio. In the end, I guess this donesn't really matter at all regarding this thread topic.

  14. Hi!

Does anyone have any tips on drum machine software -- preferably VST and free -- with a retro sound? I'd love something simple with a bit of a '70s and '80s sound that I can create drum loops with.

I never use MIDI, so I'd prefer something that produces "pure" audio, but I'm open to check pretty much anything out.

Edit: I already play drums with a fairly realistic sounding drumfont on my keyboard, so I'm not looking for something that sounds like real drums -- only something that sounds cool and fun.

    Thanks!

  15. I guess I'm in the grey area ... I've worked for years creating VGM remixes, released three albums, got some praise (from a Funkadelic guitarist, among others), and listened to dozens of WIPs and other people's music which I've commented, both in the WIP forum and on the irc channel. Alas, I'm not a posted remixer, but I've waited since December to get my remix judged.

I'll take that as a reason to spam my newly released album in this thread.

So, here! Listen to my album and buy it if ya want!!!!!!!! Thanks!!!

    (Click my banner below.)

Now I'll proceed to where I'm supposed to. See ya'all.

  16. I do have a pretty groovy rendition of a Mega Man 3 Dr Wily part + the general boss tune from the same game nearly finished. It's gonna be on my upcoming album, and I don't wanna "out" it before that, but I might do a mixdown and send you a WIP. I like this idea for a project!
