  1. http://project2612.org/download.php?id=61 - "Robotnik 1" The theme arranged here is in both S3 and S&K, so I'm ok with crediting it to S&K. We allow the artist to attribute the track to basically whatever game they want, as long as it's from there. Piano sample opening things up doesn't sound very realistic, but is performed decently and also had some nice effects on there to compensate for the sounds. Nice segue at :59 to some tite beats. Lead comes in at 1:16 and is really too dominated by the beatwork, but the clean production makes it less of an issue than if other people did the same thing. Very tasteful use of the Sonic 3 SFX at 1:49, especially the spring noise being played around with like that. Excellent changeup in the lead instrumentation at 2:06; same at 2:23 to keep it moving. Great way to come up with a creative (albeit liberal) and sophisticated arrangement of a 26-second-long source tune. The track evolved very skillfully. Props on a winner, Steve. YES
  2. http://project2612.org/download.php?id=61 - "Mushroom Hill Zone" & "Knuckles' Theme (Sonic 3)" Opens up rather abruptly and tepidly with the Mushroom Hill Zone stuff. Not really feeling the percussion there, but oh well. Nice changeup at :17 though, even though the texture still seems really empty. Steve messed with some of the progression of the original with the variation at :27. Some guitar synth-like stuffs at :45 that's decent, but the texture still sounds really thin regardless. It's somewhat of a holdover issue from his previous OC ReMix, Mega Man 2 "The Fifth Season". 1:03 builds off the Mushroom Hill Zone before seguing into some seemingly original material at 1:21. Tight usage of the Knuckles' theme at 1:40 at the foundation of the track. Some flat-out weird synth soloing was on top of that and didn't seem to have much rhyme or reason. Definitely could have used more direction. Switches back into the chorus of Mushroom Hill Zone nicely as the Knuckles theme faded out nicely. Some more variations on the theme. Even though I'm not really feeling the arrangement choices as much as others would, I have to give props to the constant instrumental variations here used to keep things fresh. Nice ideas at 3:37 for the last section, though the transition to it was too abrupt IMO. In any case, this was a very liberal/mostly original take with Mushroom Hill as the base going toward the fadeout close. Not my cup of tea, but the work put into the arrangement was good; good instrumet variation, and very personalized handling of the source material. I still think Steve's stuff tends to sounds a bit thin, and that the arrangement could sound less meandering, but he's certainly getting the job done. YES
  3. I agree 100% with your baseless comment. Because mixes #1492, #1493, #1494, #1495 and #1496 are definitely not either a) predominantly played live or completely played live. Clearly, we need to keep out any mixes like that. Pick anything posted in the last 3 years, and I'm sure it would fall into the "ultra-synth" category. Understandably, that is all we allow.
  4. "R3" is the most significant figure in the name "R3FORGED"... Redeemed Relinquished Reforged ...hence the R3. :\ As long as there's a method to the madness, that's all I need to hear.
  5. pretty sure you know who i am. Earthbound Scaraba The song itself is titled "Scars". The remix features a bassline borrowed from an obscure live performance of the X-Japan song with the same name. In a way, it's my posthumous tribute to the colorful and much beloved guitarist who wrote that song. ------------------------------------------------ http://snesmusic.org/v2/download.php?spcNow=mo2 - "Bazaar" (mo2-098.spc) Props to Bound Together (and Mythril Nazgul especially) for giving this source tune the love it deserved wth "Da Black Market". Opens up with some nice synths effects before some synth geetar comes in there at :11. Bit fakey but nothing bad. Drum pattern arrived at :36 with some industrial overtones while the synths did a nice job of playing around the stereo field. Drum pattern was pretty plain and repetitive and the "Bazaar" melody at 1:11 was rather buried under the rest of the instrumentation. Would have worked better if it wasn't that one shrill line with such rigid timing. Little organic perc work thrown in there at 1:23, but didn't blend in well with the rest of the sounds; sounded stapled on top. Arrangement of the melody is basically just that one shrill synth playing the melody verbatim with some minor embellishments from the guitar, which was a letdown. Cool brief section with the voices from 2:11-2:22; great potential, but all too brief. Some new guitar writing at 2:23 looked like it was taking the arrangement in a new direction, except it turned out it was just a new part added into another iteration of the previous 2 minutes. Changed over at 3:23-3:47 into an arrangement of the chorus finally ("Right Now"/Van Halen-ish), though that drum pattern never changed. The change in tone of the whole piece was rather jarring in a bad way; felt like the idea was barely explored and didn't thematically connect with the rest of the song. The backing parts on cruise control became plodding; there's potential for a better-developed interpretation of the "Bazaar" melody, as it was definitely lacking here. This kind of track doesn't have to be bland, repetitive and underdeveloped; I can't imagine X Japan sounds like that. Sorry, Tim. I like your stuff, and I'm sure you're happy with it the way it is, but it's far from your strongest. NO (rework/resubmit)
  6. ReMixer Name: Fishy Real Name: Cain (or Kenny) McCormack Fishy1618@gmail.com Website: http://fishy1618.googlepages.com/home Forum ID: Fishy Game remixed: Final Fantasy X Song Remixed: Thunder Plateau "Electric Rainbow" is my first submission, and is very odd coming from me as there's absolutely no guitar playing in it. It's a very mellowed out, calm version of a very jumpy, bouncy song that i think has a very nice chilled feel. It's got various "synth-struments" (as some guy put it) and some nice strings here and there with a hint of reverse drums for effect. I was inspired to make this when i was testing out my midi keyboard, i was just playing about with the main theme and decided to lay down a bit on the matrix, and i just kept adding to it. Pretty much everything was done real time triggering and there's lots of improvising with the main theme, the leads pretty much go wherever i felt like going at the time, which gives it a nice free feel i think. Anyway, there it is.
  7. Greetings. A few years ago, I submitted a song but it never got to the consideration part. Maybe you guys did not like, maybe I did something wrong. Long story short, I have made several Phantasy Star remixes over the years and my friends keep bugging me to try again, so here. * Your ReMixer name : Aeroprism * Your real name : Sebastien * Your email address : * Your website : none * Your userid (number, not name) on our forums : None yet. · Name of game(s) ReMixed : Phantasy Star 2 · Name of individual song(s) ReMixed : Rise or Fall (original) Rise and Triumph (remix) · Additional information about game if it has not yet been added to the site, including composer, system, etc. : N/A · Link to the original soundtrack if it is not one of the sound archives already available on the site: N/A · Your own comments about the mix, for example the inspiration behind it, how it was made, etc.: One of my favorite songs, it was only natural that I start with this one. Made with Reason 2.5, inspired a little by a midi track I once heard. Close to the original one, I didn't feel like going too far on this one. Some of the other PS remixes I did are more original but it was important for me to submit this one first. I tried to keep a Genesis feel to the drums and I figured that trumpets would be the last instrument people would expect hearing in this song's chorus. Anyways, here it is. Have a good one! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aeroprism
  8. ReMixer name: LoopyThePirate Real name: Darrell Reconose E-mail address: loonylupin06@yahoo.com Website: http://www.myspace.com/loopythepirate Game remixed: The Legend of Zelda 64: Ocarina of Time Song remixed: Gerudo Valley Link to song: Comments: My first OCR submission! This is an instrumental rock version of the Gerudo Valley theme from OoT. My hat goes off to Darangen, whose "Falling Back" was the inspiration behind this track. I was going for a high-tech space rock sound that my side proejct The Alien Paradox (http://www.myspace.com/thealienparadox) is known for. Perhaps what was going on in my head was that I wanted it to sound as if Gerudo Valley was "Gerudo Highway" in the 30th century, hence the title. ------------------------------------------------------ http://www.zophar.net/usf/lozusf.rar - 68 "Gerudo Valley" http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01435/ - "Falling Back" Offhand, we only have 2 sets of ReMixes where one mix was directly inspired by another. "Wily Meets Flash Man"/"Dr. Wily Haunts Flash Man" and "Blue"/"Blue (Shooting Star Mix)". The first set was from NoppZ and later Mattias Holmgren inspired by NoppZ. The second was Ziwtra, with Ziwtra later choosing to update the original version of the mix. You listen and compare them and you see how dramatically different both sets of mixes are. Much like the standard we demand for the arrangement of an original VGM tune, if you're going to go for an arrangement inspired by a preexisting arrangement, it's important that your new track still creatively stand apart from the inspiration. This, IMO, does not do that. "Falling Back" is primarily guitar-based, and so is this one, basically using all the same riffs and arrangement ideas that Darangen used, only not as cohesively put together. Playing the vocal parts with the guitar instead was pretty cool and it takes skill to learn the parts, but doesn't get the job done on presenting a different enough arrangement compared to Darangen's. Why was the drumwork so loud at :48? Tone it down. Decent guitar wank ideas at 2:19 for the soloing with the piano underneath, which proceeded to completely fall apart at 2:31 as those terrible drums got added, cluttering the whole soundfield while the guitar and piano decided to get crazy and the overall volume seemed to go up. Terrible idea to throw in the machine-gun drums at 3:05, as it didn't fit with the rest of the sounds. The vox used in that section was barely audible; scrap it anyway, since it sounds cheap and tacky. You have some great energy here along with some potentially impressive flourishes on guitar, Darrell, but that all got undermined by the cluttered soundfield and poor production. The parts adapted from "Falling Back" are too similar to Darangen's to fit in with the standards here. You've gotta get away from the same tempo and/or same rhythmical changes he used and go for something that pays homage to his mix but also stands alone was yours. For the sections you had where you didn't nearly follow "Falling Back" to the T, the production was simply unwieldy and hampered the performance. Keep working on this though. It's got good potential. 9. Hello, I recently completed a recording that I would like to be considered to be put on the site. This is the first "ReMix" I've done, but I think it came out nicely. Here's all the info: ReMixer Name: M2S7N Email Address: mfzb.moneen@gmail.com Name of game ReMixed: Super Mario Bros. 3 Name of individual song ReMixed: World Map 5 (The Sky) Comments: As the first serious ReMix of a video game song I've done, I wanted to do something simple, and it doesn't get much more simpler than the I - IV progression used in this song. Simple songs can be very good songs though, as Koji Kondo has shown time and time again. I recorded all instruments myself, with the exception of the drums, which were programmed, so there's a human element to the song. I wanted to stay true to the original and not add much outside of the basis of the song which is the I - IV progression, but there are obvious instrumentation changes, new rhythms and small parts, a slower tempo, and more of a dub feel, which should be obvious when listening. Overall I think it deviates enough from the original to be considered for the site. Thanks The song can be found here: ---------------------------------------------------- Ha! This sounds a lot like something weed could whip up in a few minutes. zykO liko! Y'all cousins? Not too interpretive on the arrangement here to start, but all of it at least plays off of the melody and countermelody of the original. The synths and guitar don't quite gel together when they're both in play, IMO, but it's not bad. Kind of hard to get something substantial out of a 2:19-long arrangement, and you did try to develop the piece a lot by adding more and more stuff as it went on (especially after 1:38), but there's a lot more potential for the arrangement than what's in place right now. Would like to see the piece extended and further developed by adding some wholly original or extremely sections, since everything's based on that straightforward progression and tends to feel too samey after a while. I like the direction this one's headed in though. NO (resubmit)
  10. Hi, Blew the dust off an old unfinished remix of mine and really worked hard the last few days improving the production quality. It's basically the themes from Oil Ocean Zone but done in an Electronic/Orchestral fusion style, though it's hard for me to really give it a genre. I've tried my best to get it to OC Remix quality, but if you don't think it is that standard I'd really appriciate some feedback ReMixer name: Qjimbo Email address: Website: http://rainscape.org.uk/music/ Best Regards, Jim

Additional Info: Composed by: Hirokazu Tanaka/Ryoji Yoshitomi/Kazumi Totaka, System: SNES Comments: I heard the title theme for the first time in about 5 years, and I realized that it had nothing other than the melody, so I decided to analyze the melody, and make chords over it, and turn it into a sort of jazz-ish type remix. The drum sample is from "Uptight" by Art Blakey. During the piano solo I made, I messed up. A lot. but then I kind of went along with it, and it ended up sounding really funny. Especially when it comes back in. Thanks for your time, and your site for that matter. I hope you'll consider it.

Finally, I decided to study all your musical tastes. And this is what i've got. A funky-ized synth piece, with a good sound quality because of the "compressor-work" , some strong and sticky drum'n'bass, a COOL solo, a good chorus and the search of new sonorities and musical forms within the electronic music. Before this i though calling the remix RoboFunk, or something alike. I'm not sure if the name's allright. Since i didn't get much feedback on the Work in progress thread, I decided to submit. The song comes in TWO flavours. That means TWO equalizations. The mastered version and the not-so-mastered one. The Not so mastered sounded better on the car, but the mastered sounded better on the PC . So, choose the equalization you prefer. This wasn't made on a computer, I played this on my digital piano and recorded it via a line in port on my computer. The instruments are simply Grand Piano and Wood Bass in the same channel. I've always liked the music on video games because of the creativity put into them. I started playing the Mario theme song and this mix was made. That's about all I have to say about the song itself. I added as much of the ID3v2 tag that I could do with my computer. Let me know if anything is missing, I'll be sure to change it. ----------------------------------------------------- http://www.zophar.net/usf/sm64usf.rar - 02 "Title Theme" & 14 "Cave Dungeon" Hate to glib you, but the performance could stand to be more fluid, and the composition itself needs something more in the left hand to actually fill the piece out. The arrangement is fairly interpretive, but the pacing & rhythms are really plodding and sap the energy right out of this one. NO

The drums are near-completely uncreative. There's no ending. The arrangement is too brief, conservative, repetitive, and boring. Pretty much everything the standards and guidelines encourage you not to be. The soloing during the chorus was alright, but not much to speak of. 16. Hey hey, Dave and/or Judges! Been an eternity since I submitted a remix, but I finally created one I'm satisfied with. Seems so hard to do these days. This is a dark, angry, brooding remix of the Magus battle theme from Chrono Trigger. This was actually one of the first songs I ever attempted to remix, and the version I made back in 2001 is, well, pure unadulterated shit. This version, on the other hand, is pretty tasty. But that's subjective, so I'll leave it up to the ears and minds of whoever ends up reading this. Pulled on a lot of inspiration from Concord Dawn for this. They are one of the truly great names in drum 'n' bass music today, always outdoing themselves. Anyway, similar in style to the kind of stuff they've been doing lately, I wanted to make something with humongous bass synths. So here it is. Enjoy, Dain Olsen // Beatdrop
  17. This theme takes the main field theme from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES) and Ocarina of Time (N64) and creates a totally different feel for the game. My song is titled "Belmont Triumphant" and is a remake of the opening theme to Super Castlevania 4. The song can be heard at www.myspace.com/albinoskullfuck Thanks for your consideration. - Jon Ferrari ------------------------------------------------------- http://snesmusic.org/v2/download.php?spcNow=scv4 - "Theme of Simon" (scv4-04.spc) Decent stuff, albeit not well-produced and not entirely cohesive. Why is this track at 96kbps/22kHz anyway? Synths opening up the piece were pretty weak. Pretty straightforward geetar coverage of the source tune without very much in the way of personalizing it (or having interesting drums). 1:48 merely rinses and repeats the previous stuff. Good idea for that second guitar complimenting the melody, but there really should be more personalization and interpretation beyond that. NO

During that period I came across this site, and well you know how the rest of it goes. Recently I got my hands on FL Studio 6, and decided it was time to get back in the game. I chose this mix for two main reasons, the source tune sounded completely wicked on my bro's home theater system, and nobody has done it yet. Ironically I wanted to be original. I decided to take an ambient approach and slow everything down, while still keeping the melody relevant and in the foreground. You can only listen to a mix so many times before everything in it just sounds the same to you, so I really gotta thank everyone in the WIP forums and #ocrwip for providing me with good feedback or swift kicks in the ass when I could no longer provide feedback or kicks for myself.

I wanted to do it in a style different from the medley I was working on, so I decided to start this. Whatever style you would call it. Um, yeah. Anyway, I hope somebody enjoys listening as much as I enjoyed making it. It may not be the best quality, but I had fun. ---------------------------------------------- Something's telling me I forgot something, but I always tell myself that, and I don't know of anything I left out. I'll just have to ignore myself and send it now. I've already checked everything a hundred times. Something's probably missing anyway. XD ----------------------------------------------------- http://www.zophar.net/nsf/metroid.zip - Track 4 ("Norfair") Very fake drumkit opened things up here. Melody's handled by some poorly-sequenced woodwinds. The strings being used to pad the track seemed too loud and were causing some mud. Gotta look at the sound balance for this one. Everything was in-yo-face loud at the same time; you need to have more distinct background and foreground players; IMO, pull the drums and supporting instrumentation back. I'd point out specific times, but it's simply a constant problem through out the 4 minutes. Making everything loud just exposed how the performance didn't sound realistic/organic; it's up to you to refine the presentation. As is, I think you've got a great arrangement concept and solid enough writing. I dunno how you managed to come up with something so solid from such a bland, empty source. (I like "Norfair", BTW, it just doesn't sound very inspiring as a standalone track.) But you gotta work on the execution by better balancing the sounds and humanizing the performance more. Keep on it, Ben; get feedback from Works and ask specific questions on determining levels and humanizing drums, winds & piano in ReMixing. NO (resubmit)

Always a bad sign. (I completely cut/pasted.) Sounds like a grade-up album version. Very reminiscent and authentic to the style of the SST Band with the synth choices, but hardly any interpretation to speak of. The loop point is even that same at 1:14. Much like my previous NO Override, the arrangement does feature some minor embellishments compared to the original. In this case, you have some minor additional parts, for example the bells. All in all, negligible additions and not a reinterpretation of the theme on any meaningful level. 2 MIDI rip/verbatim loops of the original, followed by a vox fade at 2:29. NO Override

Few details about the song: - I wanted a techno based song, but with the creepy feel that the Castle theme in SMW is meant to produce. I used lead synths with fine pitch bending to help give them that creepy sound. - My favorite part of the song is after the climax in the middle, it drops down to a mellow trans. The e-piano makes it work. - The orchestral instruments used were used because it's my style. I love dumping all kinds of orchestral instruments in all my songs, so I feel it brings more personality into the remix. -- ~DJ Econcerto ------------------------------------------------------ http://snesmusic.org/v2/download.php?spcNow=smw - "Sub Castle BGM" (smw-15.spc) Weird string sequencing during the intro; it tires to sound realistic, but was merely awkward and not very fluid. Some overbearing beats joined in at :15. Use of the melody (and countermelody) at :38 was pretty conservative, and relied on the other parts to carry the track, which they weren't able to do. Decent genre adaptation but you have to roll with something more interpretive. Back to the jerky strings and loud beats at 1:08, with another subtler iteration of the source at 1:24 that faded up at 1:32. Varied up the synth at 1:40 to change the feel for a bit, which was good. The overall groove gets too static after a while; some more varied beat patterns would help. Randomly click anywhere you have beats going on in the track, and they're basically the same. The original being such a sparse track is something you can work to your advantage by writing more creative, evolving parts to fill in the gaps. Some more noticeable interpretation via the woodwind at 2:25 on top of the conservative melody, but the soundfield was really cluttered up until 2:48. The lead synth and woodwind are basically buried under the beats while also competing with whatever pad you had going on there. You really gotta reassess the sound balance. More of the same writing (and clutter) from 3:19-3:42. WAY too jarring of a transition at 2:48 as half the sounds cut out abruptly in one moment; make things smoother. Nonetheless, good original writing based off the progression of the source from 2:48-3:19. What the hell? I complained about a lack of more interpretive arrangement, then you wheel out the ending section at 3:42? Where was this type of creative stuff before, where you really play around with the theme? You need to explore more along this interpretive route with your composition; don't tease the potential like that. Very weak resolution with that crappy string sample at 4:05. Anyway, this has some promising stuff, but you gotta get better with your sound balance, whittle down the more "conservative melody + b33tz" sections in favor of more substantive interpretation, and press on with the more interpretive ideas you had later on. Good potential. NO (rework/resubmit)

The orchestration's thin and dry IMO, but the arrangement possessed interpretation via the changes in the supporting instrumentation. Wish the melody was more substantially played around with early on, though things got more liberal at 1:43. However, the lead and countermelodic writing from 1:43-2:03 seemed meandering and "different for the sake of being different" rather than having much other purpose. Snuck in a "Chrono Trigger" reference at 2:23, I see. 2:03, 2:45 & 3:06 marked some additional instrumentation ideas, and I like how you worked to vary up the instrument choices/combinations the whole way through. But the texture was still way too sparse with the production not compensating for the very synthetic-sounding samples. Everything sounds so dry and upfront, with almost no depth or richness to it. Even with the varied instrumentation, the arrangement structure was ultimately boring, as it just went verse-chorus-verse-chorus-verse-chorus without much of anything else to break the pattern. Throw in some original writing or make the melodic writing more liberal and varied over the course of the track to keep things fresh. Some potential and not a bad concept, but the execution was only part of the way there. Gotta work on production to add more meat and spatial depth to the sounds, plus add more unique flavor to the arrangement by daring to tinker more with the actual "Wind Scene" melody and/or adding some original passages. Keep at it, Bobby. NO
