  1. Game developer Pixeljam Games has gathered a group of musicians with roots in the IDM scene of the early 2000s and released their second compilation album featuring mostly electronic music, Pixeljams Volume 2:

    https://pixeljam.bandcamp.com/album/pixeljams-volume-2

The album features electronic musicians, game composers, and game developers including:

Datassette (FEZ: Side F, remixes for Royskopp)
Ochre (game music remixer, IDM artist)
Miles Tilmann (Co-founder of Pixeljam Games, IDM artist)
Mark DeNardo (primary composer at Pixeljam Games, working on most of their 20+ titles)
Keepalive aka Jeremy Flower (electronic artist touring worldwide)
Donkey Koch aka David Kanaga (Proteus, Dyad and Panoramical)
Alex Mauer (Co-founder of Imagos Softworks, chiptune pioneer, composer of Starr Mazer)

It's a project near and dear to my heart as somebody who has roots in the demoscene, and saw many of those artists enter the IDM scene. I know there are a lot of demosceners here, too, so thought some people might care.

    Enjoy!

  2. Ghost Police, a 2D shmup combining Game Boy/NES graphical styles being released with A) a licensed soundtrack or B) an original soundtrack by Jake Kaufman using the N163 sound chip if this campaign is successful:

That's right, the campaign is solely to fund Jake's music. Pretty novel for crowdfunding, I think!

Check out the syncing on the pitch trailer.

  3. Yet another Kickstarter, but this time there's a social message about the plight of those working on the ship breaking industry as well as hopes to include music by Hiroki Kikuta and Dale North. Only a week left in the campaign, so the stretch goals to bring them on are pretty slim, but surprised that it hasn't reached its modest funding goal of just 15k.

    There's also a 2-hour public demo.

Everyone really that burnt out on Kickstarter?

  4. Wanted to let everyone know that [NUREN] The New Renaissance is on Kickstarter in its final week:

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/916717037/nuren-the-new-renaissance

It blurs the lines between film, videogames, and music and is a feature-length experience that be enjoyed in VR or with traditional mouse and monitor. Created by virt and vocalist Jessie Seely (Double Dragon Neon), with contributions from Vince DiCola & Kenny Meriedeth (Transformers) and Chris Huelsbeck (Turrican). They also just announced that $50 pledges will snag The Complete Virt Collection, which will include all of his Bandcamp music and lots of unreleased soundtracks and demoscene tunes.

If you dig, help spread the word!

  5. Here's something that I'd really like to see happen: Temporus is aiming to put platformer, SHUMP and RPG together in one scifi adventure. Those are quite possibly the three genres that get me playing lately. But the real USP is that C-Jeff is marked down as the musician. I mean.. you know..

Anyway, I pledged my $10 for the digital copy of the game and I hope a lot of you will pledge various sums for various reward levels too.

More than that, if they can reach 25k (their first stretch goal, although they're struggling to meet their main goal), there will be a remix album with virt, Jeff Ball, coda, Mitch Murder, and Vince DiCola (& Kenny Meriedeth) of Rocky IV/Transformers: The Movie (1986) fame!

Just a few days left to support!

  6. Make an RPG and pay me to compose the soundtrack and THERE it is :D

Jayson: nice to see you coming here and expressing your thoughts. I'm still on the fence wether this was a good idea or not. My main thoughts are the same as yours but if OCR ends up hosting free legal VGM OSTs it might move here.. We'll see what happens, let's just avoid drama :)

Seriously, man. Let's avoid the drama. ;) Ahnyway, it's your job to get your music out there to as many people as possible, so don't worry about it.

It'd be awesome if OCR started hosting this stuff though. There's a ton of stuff that has been released online for free, and I think OCR is the perfect venue to do that.

Anyway, sorry for getting sidetracked. I still need to listen to your music!

  7. Just want to say in defense of this forbidden site, it shouldn't be lumped together with garbage like GH. I know a lot of the guys, and while I don't always agree with what they do, I'll tell you that they are pretty careful and thoughtful about what they post.

Also, I would hope that most of us are dedicated enough to this area of music to actually purchase a CD when it's something we listen to regularly. I admit to downloading a large amount of music, but I also buy a lot too. Hard to gamble $30 away on a soundtrack that may or may not be any good. And hey, in a lot of cases, you might end up getting exposed to something you would have missed otherwise. I guess the ideal situation would be for every label/company to post samples, but that doesn't seem to happen on a regular basis, and it's still difficult at times to gauge an album even with samples in hand.

I doubt I have to tell you guys that some people view OCR unfavorably as well. While nobody makes money from their contributions to OCR, and there technically isn't any lost reveue on the side of the game company, it provides competition for whatever the company might have in mind for their music. Also, it's all copyrighted material any way you look at it, so I don't see how anyone can take the moral high-ground.

  8. Definitely missing the point. It's fun to work with limitations, and it's cool to have a portable tool to show your friends on the fly, etc. Plus the wi-fi opens up all sorts of possibilities.

It ships tomorrow, but we just posted some impressions here, along with a series of videos including a remix of Chrono Trigger's "Undersea Palace," a tune from GEM Impact (Metal Gear Solid 4, Ninja Blade), and even some jams from The OneUps. Lastly, an interview with Mitsuda about the project:

  9. Haha, it's just like us to complain about what's missing, right? I agree. WC2 music is amazing. Martin Leung actually performed a WC2 arrangement at the BlizzCon VGL show (there's a review of the show somewhere on OSV), but yeah, hopefully they do another EOW album and have some WC2 stuff.

Regarding WoW, the game has over 20 hours of music, so chances of you finding something seems pretty slim, haha. Wrath of the Lich King will have 7 hours of music by itself, bringing the total to over 27 hours. That's just nuts.

EOW looks and sounds great. I've never been the biggest WoW fan, so the first disc isn't so exciting, but the rest of the stuff is awesome.

  10. The Eminence Symphony Orchestra has just announced that they've recorded a two-disc album celebrating the music for Blizzard Entertainment. We've got an interview with Eminence director Hiroaki Yura about the project, their collaboration with the composers and the guest arrangers (including Kow Otani and Go Shiina), and the possibility of another Echoes of War album in the future. Additional photos and track list are included!

    http://www.originalsoundversion.com/?p=881

Looks pretty sweet. Will anyone be picking this up?

  11. The show is in Japan only. This is only the second year, so.

They put out a compilation CD of original soundtrack versions of the songs they played, then they put out a volume 1 live collection. There was supposed to be a volume 2 and a DVD of the show, but I guess they're stuck in copyright issues.

Working on an interview with the event organizer, so hopefully I'll have that ready soon and post it here for you guys.
