  1. Do you have to have gamecube controllers to play gamecube games, or can you use the classic controller?

You need a gamecube controller and memory card, to play and save GC games. It shuts down all Wii-related hardware and runs strictly in Gamecube mode.

  2. Why would you have to do that? I mean, don't all you have to do is hit one button to jump and stuff?

Super Mario World? No, you need to be able to run and jump.

Plus there's 2 types of jump. Regular, and spin jump.

The game is pretty well unplayable with the GC controller.

  3. Which one was spider guardian? I remember Boost being really annoying. But have no recollection of spider guardian. Must not have been a problem for me.

A virtual non-boss, where you're in morphball form the entire time. You have to trigger all the targets fast enough, and hit the guardian with your bombs.

No big intro or anything to that boss, it's just sorta.. there, waiting for you.

  4. No problems with mine either, except this one time on Oblivion, doing the Umbra quest, she kicked my ass so hard, it crashed my ps3.

Then on my friends ps3, I do get slowdown on some of the games he has, but he leaves his damn ps3 on ALL week, running Folding at home, he has like 240 work units done, crazy bastard.

Haha. Umbra pwnd you so hard, she hacked YOUR gibson, bitch! :P

  5. No. It was the Spider Ball Boss. The rest of the game was just the right difficulty, but it was that GOD DAMNED SPIDER BALL BOSS.

Also, the Boost Ball Guardian on Hard Mode has me stuck.

EDIT: PEOPLE ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT HARD METROID GAMES? Try this, you will love hating it: http://drewseph.zophar.net/

I hate the spider guardian with a passion. You don't take much damage, but the timing is a whore.

  6. Hehe.. that's cute.

But, I think they should have done something about Zero Mission.. they should have held off on the Shinespark/speedbooster until this game, since it would almost be viable, as an effect of the corruption changing her.

  7. Aren't you just faster and more powerful in hyper mode?

Haha, if they did implement it somehow, MP3 would make for some interesting speedruns...

The hyper mode corrupts. I think you can only use it so much, with the effects being cumulative, before something critical happens.

  8. So then.. is THIS what Reggie was saying?

Or are we going to maybe wind up with something like this for Smash Bros as well?

Because that'd be outright pimp. A Wii version of the Smash Bros website, with some exclusive content and maybe even some sort of minigames to get people in the mood.

And they should also do it for Mario Galaxy.

Also, something I realized.. this could be used to great effect, to create.. add-on games. When you own the game, just put it in then launch an add-on channel for it, to gain things like.. a whole multiplayer type game, that just uses the in-game resources, re-mapped in a whole new way, to save things like start-up time of launching the game itself.

  9. August is now dubbed month of Metroid.

Nintendo is celebrating the soon to be released Metroid Prime 3 by dedicating a whole month to it.

Check out the Wii shopping channel for a new "channel" dedicated to demos for Metroid Prime 3, along with info about both the Virtual Console releases of Metroid and Super Metroid.

Funny thing.. just yesterday, IGN had an anti-hype article, about how there's been NO hype from Nintendo about MP3.. and now, an entire bloody channel devoted to it! o.o

  10. Has anyone noticed the ad for the Nintendo DS lite in Wave Race for the VC? you can see it on a banner at the beginning of the port blue course and it's behind the racers at the end when they're standing on the pedestal. small change but it's a nice touch.

    They also advertise the Wii.

  11. This question is for people who:

-Own a Gamecube Action Replay disk that previously worked when loaded on the Wii

-Did that whole system update thing everyone's talking about above

Is anyone having problems loading their Action Replay disk now? Mine gives me an error message every time. I don't know if it's just something to do with my disk or not, but the fact that it worked yesterday and doesn't work today leads me to suspect the update. Meh. Just asking.

Anti-piracy measures, most likely. the Action Replay could be used to bypass region/legit disc detection. So, by disabling the disc(they did it with the WiiKey update CD as well, I hear), it locks it down against piracy.

  12. Cool update. It said it also affects the Weather Channel, but the only main updates I see are to the News channel and the addition of that clock. It also says there's new search capability in the Shop channel but when I try to connect to it it gives me an error. The error code isn't turning anything up on nintendowifi.com. Anyone else not able to get into the shop channel after the update?

Edit: That clock being off-center is really going to bother me.

The error message just means Nintendo's servers are a little overwhelmed right now and to try again later. That's what all of their error messages mean when you're trying to connect to their servers.

The search functions in the shop channel are meh.. you can search by most popular(by downloads, presumably), the highest ranked(chosen by Nintendo, of course), and even an enhanced search, to let you find a game by title search, using just a few letters.

I figure what most of the update really was, was the inclusion of the near-final version of the Mii Popularity channel, so all they have to do is have the user download an enabler and stat file, much like the Everybody Votes channel(very, VERY small download, because most of it was probably force-fed into the 2.2 firmware already).

I guess this was the "big surprise" Reggie was hinting at, in that interview. Bah, if that's all, they can keep it.

  13. Apparently you can now update your firmware to 3.0 and apparently it makes channel loading much faster. The Wii Shop Channel apparently got a big overhaul too.

I say apparently because I've been downloading for 10 minutes and am at about 15% finished.

    Ooh, update? *goes to download*

  14. You can put him to sleep before stomping him, which is generally safer because he won't be able to attack you once to begin with. However, either way you won't be doing any real damage to him until Mario's had two whole turns. Also, your hammer was doing more damage because at the point when you can first fight him you have a better hammer than boots. But yes, the hammer is generally better because his defense only takes off damage for the one hit, rather than the two you have in jumping (i.e. it blocks one damage from a six-point hit rather than one damage from each three-point hit). Jumps are only better if you're a master of timing the action command for Power Bounce, in which case you can conceivably down the guy without ever putting him to sleep a second time.

I just used Goombario's headbutt to knock Kent on his ass before having Mario use the star power to put the guy to sleep. First turn, Kent didn't get a chance to attack at all. Just had Mario continue to pound him while Goombario used focus to rebuild the star power, then repeat.

And there isn't a lot of difference in power between my stomps and my hammer. I have jump and hammer up, plus attack up. There's not a 6 point difference between the attacks, even with a single jump. In fact, I think the hammer was just going right through his defenses.

  15. He may be immune, I haven't tried putting him to sleep , so I don't know.

Anyway, I'm having fun with it. I played all the way through about 5 years ago, but I've still died a couple of times (those bloopers in the sewer come right out of nowhere). I love using the Boo ghost - It's fun repeatedly slap the shit out of enemies.

You have to double-stomp Kent C. to get him on his back, then you can put him to sleep.

And then I suggest you use a hammer, because my jump was only doing 2 damage, while the hammer was doing a full 8.

  16. This actually just made me think of something that I nearly forgot that's been on the back of my mind for a while now, but I never got around to asking. I always assumed yes until this was brought up though.

Does the PS3 have region locking? And if so I assume it's just for the discs and not for demos then?

(Thread's too long to backtrack if this has already been asked, sorry.)

    -Nick

I don't think there's any region locking for the games.. but I do remember reading somewhere(Kotaku, maybe?) that one of the upcoming games -would- have standard, oldskool region locking.

At least Sony, for the most part, realizes that region locking is the single, legal reason to use a modchip.. no modchips, next to no piracy. So, no region locking, no legal excuse for a modchip.

    Edit:

Well, damn. The very game I was thinking of, has had the region locking yanked from it.

    What -was- http://kotaku.com/gaming/say-it-aint-woo/stranglehold-on-ps3-+-region-locked-284371.php

    Is now http://kotaku.com/gaming/systems-restored/midway-backs-down-stranglehold-now-region+free-285961.php

Too bad some companies think it pays to buck the trend, all because they foolishly think they somehow make more money selling the same game in different regions, than they do selling the same game to ALL regions.

  17. So is anyone else playing Paper Mario on the VC?

I'm trying to beat Kent C. Koopa but for some bloody reason he won't fall over when I put him to sleep. What the hell?

Not that far myself.. So far, the only things I don't like about the game, is the lack of witty, 4th-wall humor, and the frequent slowdowns. Including during boss battles(like against General Guy).

I hope Nintendo does something to tweak up their emulator and re-releases the game without the slowdown.

  18. I personally liked Ogre Battle 64 better, but I wouldn't complain about the SNES version.

I just hope they don't try to make some sort of straight port of Tactics Ogre. If they did, then they'd no doubt abuse the pointer function when the D-pad or analog would work more than well enough.

  19. I was just being semi-sarcastic about the no 3d models :P I was just going for nostalgia value lol.

But yeah, I'd love for a new side scroller Metroid. It could be so beautiful on the Wii. It wouldn't have to be so graphically demanding, which is what the Wii is good at :P

I think it'd also be pretty amazing if they remade Metroid II for the GBA or DS or whatever like they did with the original Metroid. I know there's emulators and whatnot, but I still feel that many people probably missed out on that game. Plus, it was on the gameboy, so the game could have looked so much better with more colors and detail.

Plus the game itself could use some more recent features. Like a map. And maybe some extra side areas.

The GB was limited in what it could offer, due to the limited resolution and choice to have Samus and all the other sprites, appear so large on the screen, so it was really very zoomed in by comparison. Expanding on it ZM-style would really be able to make it an even better game.

  20. Use the Wiimote pointer as a perfect tool for having fine control of aiming in all directions around Samus, as well as being able to implement the different visors seen in the Prime series.

I can imagine the X-ray visor would have particularly improved use, because while you can still see around you, you can move while scanning and still fire your weapon, and it would allow for some truly epic Shinespark events, when you can have that kind of subtle control over your direction.

Tracking fast-moving enemies across the screen would also be a bit of a treat. Plus the use of guided missiles and guided Super Missiles.

Personally, I wouldn't want it to be a remake of Super Metroid, because that would wind up being too much of a retcon to the series. Instead, they could easily implement it as Metroid 5 and take us somewhere new.
