DusK already has a WIP for that one (Joker hasn't updated the front page with his wip yet)
Well I'm doing it anyway 'cuz that's how bosses roll, y0!!!

Compared to the first version, the new lead at :45 has a less default-type sound, but the way the note changes slur so heavily undermines the melody.
At 1:17, this could stand some sort of switchup for the lead sound in order to keep things fresh. Or keep 1:17 the same and change the :45 lead. I'm gonna keep saying it until something else comes along, but that same main lead going for pretty much all the 4+ minutes got old. It's old. Get away from it.
Maybe alternate between some more like what you had in v1, only somewhat more more expressive. At least then you could have some actual sonic variation with these leads.
The new stuff added at 2:01 compared to the last version doesn't work. The orch stabs were super tacky and didn't have any synergy with your other sounds. IMO, I don't think they work at all, but if you really must have them in there, experiment with pushing them a lot more in the background rather than upfront, to accent the more important foreground writing.
The structure (basically A-B-A-B-C-
was still pretty repetitive without creative enough dynamic contrast, so I have the same criticism as last time. It just seems like after 2:01, you have the exact same textures, the exact same lead, the exact same groove, exact same arrangement of the source material being repeated wholesale. But now there's needless orch stabs, lead doubling and tons of grace notes being added to create differences for the sake of verse 2 not being exactly the same, yet it doesn't have any flow. IMO, this just overcomplicated things without actually improving it, and it's something a lot of developing artists are guilty of when they feel locked into a certain structure.
Not feeling the key change at 3:33 either, and the chorus at 3:48 basically gets the same crits as 2:01 (just added notes & effects over basically the same groove, same instruments, same arrangement ideas being repeated a third time.)
I still really like the core ideas here, so I hate to come out and seem like "EVERYTHING IS WRONG" when this base sounds pretty cool. I love the bassline, and the opening 45 seconds sounds cool as hell. I love the crystalline countermelody at 1:15 as I've said before and the bubbly support notes (e.g. most audible at 3:48). I like the arrangement ideas, they just end up sounding too repetitive in the long run because it's the same sounds, tempo, beats, writing with little real evolution past 2:01. Structurally, you could probably just go buildup-A-B-C-B-wind down and cut some of the fat out of this instead of letting it drag for the 5 minutes.
But you need more variation with your lead sounds and the core groove. Instead of slapping new coats of paint on the same ol' leads and melody via effects, doubling and grace notes, change the actual lead itself and think of other new melodic variations or integrate other areas of the source.
If it's just too frustrating and the constant tinkering makes you feel like this track is getting away from what you want it to be, Justin, then forget about working on it further. But if you think you can actually develop this more, then move away from this v3 and start back at square two. I think you can, otherwise I wouldn't have spent half an hour of my limited time to listen to this. I still like the potential here.
I LOVE THAT IDEA. Gonna take a bit of retooling but I'm gonna try that.

I tagged it Mod Review because I'd like an opinion on it before I resub it. The final buildup is still missing something though I can't put my finger on it....

I never forgot about Never Return Alive: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iX480gE3yls
I will see what I can do with it.

Who picked up the Kefka laugh in here?

Hey Will! Count me in again for an original, just like last year! I love this stuff.

I'm making a remix of Castlevania's "Poison Mind" the boss theme, heard here:
I'm trying to make it as creepy as I can, and give it sort of a "I'm in Dracula's pitch-dark basement and something is down here with me. It's not human..." feeling.
Here ya go: https://app.box.com/s/z7lf3myxln6trhblnotahta7cvopcc3z
That "arp" is actually a piano with heavy processing
To achieve the "creepiness" I used heavy effects and played with the tempo as well. Not finished yet though. I may do another keychange drop with an even slower tempo, recalling what Dragon Warrior 1 did with its dungeons. may add a subtle wind effect too.
Update: Updated, I still want to add some stuff, but this is the basic mix.
Update 2: Slightly updated, changed the piano for some distorted pizz. later then it goes back to the piano
Update 3: Replaced the synth bell with a real bell, and added a cymbal swell, as well as other level adjustments. no idea how I'm gonna make the organ I want sound like a real organ, but I'm going to work on doing that.
Update 4: My last update was 10/30/11, so the FLP file did suffer some synthrot, as in what the FLP expected was in the wrong places, and I had to find replacements for some elements, but I'm working on this again. New stuff: New choir, new organ from the Fluid soundfont but I made it sound as powerful as I could. new string patch. I need to find my cymbal swell I used. need to add a melody to the second and third parts so it's not too repetative.
Update 4.1: Just found a new patch for the organ! Sounds even more like it could be located in an eerie castle now.

Whose bright idea was it to use that cover art? Whoever it is, he must have been really in need of some poontang when that was created...
-
....and I think I'm gonna rename it "Solarcoil", because I don't like "Suncoils" anymore lol...
Anyway.
I don't know whether the new lead should be quieter or louder than it is now, and I need help with the volume level.
Here's the mix so far: http://tindeck.com/listen/heio

For instance, my 2011 Grand Robot Master Remix Battle goes i, A, B. A, B, C, A, e where A is a verse, B is the chorus, C is a bridge, and the period is a breakdown. i is the intro and e is the ending/coda.
I never really dabbled in other parts to a song before though.

Finally got this WIP into a showable state. Heh. I've decided to not make any more remixes and focus on originals for the time being. Still going to use these forums for tips though. You guys are AWESOME.

You know, by the time this album is released, I'll have improved so much I'll probably have a direct mixpost on the site by then.
rofl.
Probably not, bat can you give us any updates Emu?
-
I am getting bored.
Now that THAT's out of the way...yeah. Hey Emunator, can we get a full report on where things stand as of now? What about the video you promised at the end of the month...last month?
-
Double-click the background, and you can change it to whatever you want.
-
When do we start asking when it's gonna be released?
Forget that...
WE WANT A PREVIEW VIDEO!

your track was a riot, man =) good work yourself.
well, i placed 3 of 16 last time around, and now i can't do any worse than 2 of 32. i'm moving up! just one last mix. if i had known what the remix battle was the first time around, i'd definitely have participated, although i'd have gotten stomped i think since i wouldn't have had enough time to really dig in.
Prophetik, Next year, I am choosing Spring Man. Like you said, you need to remix even bad tunes to get better, and well, I've learned a ton from you man. Thanks a lot!

Oh wow.
Voting's going to be EXTREMELY hard this round. Neblix and Willrock, why make it so hard dudes? lol
-
On top of that, we've still got an absolutely mind-blowing secret that we've kept up our sleeves that'll reveal itself when the time is right
Not gonna drop hints or anything but keep in mind that the biggest bombshell of the project is still yet to be revealed!
Cheers!
No hints? Awwww darn.
-
Nobody ever got back to me on it, so it looks like it's not happening.
If you're doing an album for this, I can head back into the project file for mine and add some embellishments and more stuff, like more effects and whatnot.
-
I'm DEFINATELY competing in the next one.
Edit: Also made an updated bracket to make things easier on Darkesword: (Speedyshare link but it should last till tomorrow)

What are you gonna do in the event of a tie? SectorZ forgot Demko, who voted in all four matchups. And unless my calculations are wrong, that ties up Willrock/fredrikd AND Jakesnke/neblix.
Congratulations are in order too. Pixelwave, YOU HAVE SLAIN A DRAGON, CONGRATULATIONS.
:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D
I didn't know where to post this...
in Post Your Original Music!
Posted
...because it didn't fit in Post Originals, because it's not serious, nor Off Topic, because it's about music.
Anyway...
Thought you guys could use a laugh. My sister sent me some new music software (Magix Music Maker MX), and I'm just getting to know it...which includes making some REALLY odd/wierd stuff regardless of quality.
Must have been REALLY out of it last night because I nearly laughed my head off at it this morning: http://tindeck.com/listen/gxtl
I think I'm not going to use it exclusively, rather just to make some original loops for FL Studio.
