  1. You can never have too much processor for music making applications. However, as long as you get a minimum of a 2.4ghz Core 2 Duo you will be fine, generally speaking.

that makes me feel better. :D i only recently been buying gear, starting with the Line6 Gearbox. (I love this damn thing!) As for specs, I'm getting by pretty well with 1.8ghz Core 2 duo 6300 with 2 gigs of ram. Everything runs smooth between FL and Audition. My only complaint is getting my tracks loud enough. I can get them pretty loud, but it comes close to the "Death Magnetic" effect. High compression almost to the point of clipping. I'm not sure if the processor has anything to do with that sort of thing, does it? I also have a 5.1 sound system by Logitech that I got for around $150 US. My Audigy 2 may really be the issue though. I could use a second opinion on that.

PS. I just want to go on record that I think Death Magnetic is Metallica's best album since the Black Album. Just want to make that clear. :D

  2. Apparently I missed the fact that there are Analog outs. I managed to input through the line-in jack on my soundcard. Works REALLY well! A lot better than my old setup. I can record with it now. But i do notice some tiny TINY pops and clicks that seem like it's the sound of my hard drive interfering with the sound a little. but it's not very noticible with everything mixed together. All in all, I hit the jackpot with this thing. And NO MORE BUZZING! HA! Take that, static!

  3. that's interesting. I do use my Audigy for movies and games. Can Toneport not coexist with it?

I'm still trying things to make it NOT crash my computer. I'm almost positive it's software related because it's not until i get to the VERY END of the installation process that it crashes. Funny thing though. I was using it about an hour ago at it was working just fine albeit not out my speakers and not setup to record. But it was working. Once I tried to use the Gearbox's metronome, it crashed for the first time. Now everytime I plug it with the software installed, it crashes. When I plug it in WITHOUT the software, no crash. This is very odd.

EDIT: Ok. I downloaded drivers off the Line 6 website and COMPLETELY uninstalled the old ones. Including Monkey. I installed the new drivers and so far it's working just fine. We'll see.

EDIT The Sequel: Looks like that fixed the problem. Just needed better drivers. The CD it came with is crap. I'm tossing it. Now for round 2: How to record with this.

  4. into the tone port? no. should they be?

EDIT: Wait. I used headphones in the Toneport and I can hear it now. Crap. How do I rout it to my Audigy2? Moreover, how do I record with this? Could Audition use this?

EDIT2: Ok now my machine is crashing. If this keeps happening im looking at a reformat here

EDIT3: Everytime I plug the Toneport in, my machine crashes shortly later. Im gonna try and reinstall everything. HOPEFULLY it's not clashing with my Audigy2 somehow. Also, if I need a seperate soundcard for this thing, what do people recommend?

Update: Ok. I uninstalled the software for the Gearbox (left Monkey installed) and I plugged the Toneport in. So far, no crash. It must be software related. I'm gonna try reinstalling Gearbox. Could have been a bad installation.

  5. I updated the Monkey and the drivers and upgraded to Gold. Everything is plugged in properly via USB 2.0 and I'm plugging the guitar directly into the Tone Port DI via the socket in the front wiht the picture of the guitar next to it. I can't hear anything though! But the meters in the Gearbox program show that it's getting signal. Yet I hear nothing. What am I missing?

  6. My problem in the past though is that I tend to stray TOO far from the source. With this, each section contains an original part of the source but rearranged with something different in front or behind it. I thought this was what the judges like to see. I dunno. The standards have changed over the years so I don't know what qualifies anymore.

I figure if I beef this one up the arrangement would still work. I just ordered a Line6 Gearbox which was recommended on the mixing forums. I'm hoping that'll finally cure my buzzing problem. It may even improve my overall guitar and bass sound. Crossing fingers!

  7. I have other means of effects. My only need is a new interface that will minimize that damned buzzing noise I've been having since I started recording 10 frickin' years ago!

I'm starting to believe it's coming from my amplifier-to-soundcard interface. Too much signal from too much power being transfered. (Power from the amp combined with the power supply of the computer causing an overflow of signal. Or maybe I'm getting mixed up with something.) Either way, it's definately being caused by my form of input. I'm almost certain. Hopefully the Gearbox will solve this issue.

  8. i recorded for a few days straight and re-recorded parts during that time. it's possible that I went out of tune while recording over those few days. i'll have to re-record the entire thing anyway because I want a better sound overall. And yeah, my drums arent quite where I want them either. I need a better drum kit, there's no arguing there. The snare is a little weak. Kinda reminds me of the snare on System of a Down's Toxicity album.

Im tellin ya guys! I'm willing to go the full mile for whatever I need to get a better sound. I no longer question my skill as a musician. My equipment is aged and I need new gear. Any recommendations would definately aid in my goal.

  9. Click here to listen!

    Ok. Here's the rundown.

This is more of a rock/boogey mix of the Stage 2 theme of Blaster Master. And I'm hitting snags left and right. First the good, though. I've attempted remixes before. While those have failed, I've learned a lot from those failures. This has to be one of my better arranged remixes to date. The track starts with nothing but a bass kick. BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! This a muddy sounding bass comes in. Then distorted guitar following the bass. Then the original intro melody, but instead of just the straight A note behind it I used the bass line and riff of the main harmony. The result is more ear catching. Now I'm no pro at remixing, per se. But I gather this is what's suppose to be done? Or rather is an example of what the judges are looking for? Anyway, I'm proud of the element thus far.

Now the bad. I have had this hum and buzz in my guitar and bass for years and have found no cure as to get rid of it. And it's hindering on my quality. On top of that, I'm using 15 year old gear! Aside from the new machine a made a year ago, everything else is aged. And after hearing remixes on this site I think it's quite obious that I could do better as far as guitar/bass gear is concerned. And a new drum kit would be nice. It's not THAT old but it doesn't have the sound I'm looking for. Or maybe I'm not mixing it well? So, what do people recommend?

  10. Im not sure how its done. but what Matney says sounds about right to me. loud whispering into the mic. I couldnt imagine anyone going on tour actually screaming like that for every gig. give themselves a self-induced trachiatomy.

and in my opinion, the screaming fad for metal is irritating to me. screaming isnt bad when it's done right. as in, only sometimes in a song. Like singing melodically then throwing in a scream for one word or two for a couple measures or so. that should be all the screaming done. the hardcore death metal freaks over do it. And bands like the old Atreyu stuff or Trivium? I can't stand that crap. Mostly Trivium. Atreyu's new stuff sounds awesome though. I havent heard all of it yet but what i've heard sounds great. Oh! And In Flames. MAN! Great musicians. Horrible front man. Ruins the music.

anyway im ranting a bit. but yeah. screaming isnt in my taste.
