  1. @ Black Mage revolution Thank you for listening. As for Ebony Intuition, you can either look up that post in the Judge's forum (should still be there. It was only rejected about a month ago) or, I can offer a brief statement on the matter. Essentially, while the acknowledged the depth of interpretation that is present in the piece, they felt that it was still lacking in variation. There was some subjective disagreement about my synthesizer choices. There was also some concern about the EQ of the track, and on that note, it is the one point with which I actually agree. I should have chosen a different mastering suite to really help with the clarity and to reduce the dominance of the bass. All in all, I am glad that you enjoy my music. The fans/listeners are the real reason behind making this music, rather than the pursuit of the minutia of composition and technological processing. But, there decision is at it is. It is not as if it denies the public the ability to hear the track. It merely restricts the available avenues to the piece in question. Also, I am not upset. I am mostly concerned with contributing to the global video game community, in my own fashion. I don't expect everyone to enjoy the fruits of my labor. @ Chickenwarlord I agree some what. The synth that I used for the main melody was not entirely to my liking. However, I was unable to find a superior option. What you hear is the result of EQ work and a unison device. It is perhaps not the most dynamic sounding synth, but I feel that it does not adversely affect the overall groove. Unfortunately, I only have Reason 3, so I do not have Thor, which I hear allows for the creation of some very nice, thick synths. I will be attentive to scouring my rack options in the future. Thank you for the thoughts and for listening. If I ever do a full on redux of this piece, addressing the lead synth is on the top of the priority list.
  2. Thank you for the compliment, Melody. That is actually nice to hear. I usually get more negative commentary on these forums. So it is nice to know that my efforts are at least some what appreciated. Thank you for giving a listen. Here is hoping to the growth and improvement of my skills.
  3. Commentary is nice. I am accepting of constructive criticism.
  4. 1) I use Reason. I have been using it for about three years now. I am still clueless on things I should probably know by now (e.g. chaining, properly using the compressor rather than relying on the compression patch in Scream 4), but I seem to be able to get the job done. I suppose you can be the judge of that for yourselves. Here is my most recent composition in Reason. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rV3Jh8aFFgU 2) I agree with Obtuse. The Reason sequencer is logical and easy to arrange your songs in a loop form (easier to create break downs, choruses and main riffs). Reason also has the best mixing board of all of the DAWs I have used. I also appreciate the visual component of the rack, as well as an actual list of what instruments I have set. You can't beat being able to hit tab to literally unplug something from the mixer. 3) While I agree that the piano roll sequencer is pure garbage (though Reason also offers a piano roll sequencer for those who must have one), it does not define the overall quality of the music suite. Most of my online musician friends use FL Studios and they come up with some pretty epic VG mixes. In fact, here is something that my friend Kariu recently made. He only uses FL Studio The man is a genius with that program. Only a poor craftsman blames a functional tool for his performance. A true craftman will use a tool and not allow it to hinder him. My friend Kariu defines that kind of work ethic. With that said, FL Studio has VST support. To this day, Propellerhead refuses to add that feature to Reason, because they view Reason as a sort of expanded VST that can be ReWired into other DAWs (and this is apparent when you begin to understand the way things like Malstrom and Combinator work, essentially allowing you to create your own synths, effects and mastering suites). While the Combinator, Malstrom and other devices can allow you to come up with damn near any kind of sound, instrument or effect, there are moments where you have to take the low road and sample something and chop it up in ReCycle, and import it in Dr.Rex or ReDrum. You don't have to do that with FL Studio. They quite literally have a VST for anything musical. While I love Reason, the included "rhodes" are garbage and sound nothing like a genuine rhodes piano. On the other hand, rhodes, theramin and guitar VSTs all sound authentic. FL Studio shouldn't be the target of your ire, if you are unwilling to consider what it is capable of. At the end of the day, it all comes down to what kind of music you make and what your preference is. If you are on the path toward being a true musician, you won't allow a program to handicap you.
  5. If you use Reason, you can easily recreate older synthesizer sounds by creating them yourself with Malstrom or the Combinator. If you use Fruity Loops...well, I am not familiar with that program, but I would suggest looking for a VST. They have a VST for damn near everything.
  6. I use Reason and ReCycle (have yet to try Record). ReCycle isn't just for creating drum loops. Anyone using it just for that is almost wasting their time. You could chop files in Audacity and use ReDrum to play individual hits, if that is all you plan to do. ReCycle can be used to create any kind of audio loop or even an effect (with the help of things like the combinator, reverb, digital delay line and scream). For instance, I took a chopped loop of the amen break that had a really nice glitch stutter. I used ReCycle to isolate that small slice. I then used Dr.Rex and attached a digital delay with a four second response, threw on a gated reverb and compressed it with scream. The end result is what you hear at ~1:16 into this song that I created By no means am I an expert with Reason or Recycle, but it would be a mistake to only look at ReCycle as a tool for chopping drum loops for rearrangement.
  7. So, I am bumping this, three months after the fact, to see if I can get any feedback. Should I avoid submitting it? Should I give it a shot anyways? Thoughts? Comments?
  8. I usually go for track fades, but lately I have been trying out hard stops. I guess I will have to work on that. Also, I agree some what that I could have done better with that Taiko section. I originally wanted to put a guitar part there, but my girlfriend was sleeping at the time that I had made this arrangement, so Taiko drums were the other option haha.
  9. No worries. Mistakes happen. At the end of the day, we all love video games or at least video game music. So we should all have more kind things to say to one another based on that fact alone. Take care.
  10. @halc I still have no clue how you get that impression even though there are no midi versions of this song on the internet. As a matter of fact, I may be the first person on the Internet to post a cover/remix/arrangement for this game, let alone this song. But you are welcome to your thoughts. In a way, I still find it flattering. The implication of your statement, intended or not, is that my song sounds competent enough to have been the work of somebody else far more proficient in music creation. Being accused of stealing from myself must make me one heck of a novice song writer haha. @Willrock Oh I never take any submission I make to OCR seriously. I do find it problematic that most of the WiP posts and perhaps half of the site content are devoted to the same short list; -Donkey Kong Country -Final Fantasy (pick one) -Chrono (Trigger or Cross, pick one) -Doom -Earthbound -Castlevania -Super Mario (pick one) I tend to submit tracks for games that have no representation on this site. One of these days, somebody will get up the nerve not only to tell me that I suck, but that they can do better. And when that day comes, I will challenge them to create a better take on what I have presented. When that happens, this site will see something from a game that has been ignored and i'll be a happier man for it. I am not a music major, nor do I intend to be. I create mixes simply to re-imagine existing work, promote video game music as a legitimate format of production (much like proving that comics are literature) and most importantly, for the sake of sharing ideas and inspiring others. My music is already hosted on Youtube. I am in no need for what OCR offers (a place to host music). And I am not interested in any "prestige" associated with being accepted. The fun is in the process for me, not the end result. So with all that said, I know they will reject my mix, and I welcome it. Anyone is welcome to outperform what I have shared here today, and perhaps we will all be blessed enough to hear a mix for an otherwise ignored game.
  11. Shoot me an e-mail at The_Native_Dialect@yahoo.com I will give you the RSN file, Takio samples and soundfonts to prove that this is not a midi rip at all. Yes the drums are break loops (excluding the Taiko segment), but the rest of this is original work, including the piano motif that is reoccurring (I played that out, no sample). The bass work, the synth progressions, the hi-hats etc, are all sequenced or played out by me. But I suppose it is flattering in an odd way to be accused of midi ripping. It would be nice if I lacked the integrity to do something like that. I am sure my music would sound far more crowd pleasing since it would be built on the back of somebody else's work, but unfortunately I have the integrity to do things myself. So I am forced to present my own labors. Honestly, I am not sure how you even thought that this was a midi rip since the bass line, the underlying synth progression and the additional random synth noise I placed in the background, are nothing like the original piece. But like I said, it is some what flattering. I will consider your advice about putting more of myself into this mix. I had been considering a guitar segment but decided not to out of sheer laziness on my part to hook up my equipment. But perhaps it will add to the "personality" of the track, by adding a hard edge to an otherwise down tempo track. Thank you for listening.
  12. My apologies. I wasn't aware that this was the wrong forum. That may explain the slow response time from other posters. Thank you.
  13. Actually the drum pattern was the biggest problem I had. I am usually good about using more than one type of percussion. I enjoy the variance and recognize the benefit. This can be seen with one of my other WIPs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjfYtBYpnCE&feature=channel_page In this instance I had traditional drums, mixed with conga drums as well as a nice hi-hat/cymbal combo to give the song a real upbeat tempo. I later switch up the drum pattern for the bass heavy break down section. I have done similar things in an Ibuki mix (to a lesser extent) as well as a Sagat mix. The problem here is that the drum sample I used (which I cut myself) runs at a tempo of 95.627. That makes it impossible for me to use another sample (unless I want to go through the misery of trying to cut a similar tempo sample, and make it match that speed). I have considered using the drums included in Reason. I can't find any kits that seem like a suitable transition however...
  14. One of my friends who is an elctronic music artist out here in L.A., told me the same thing about my rather bizzare/low budget approach to recording that section. He said it worked well for me. Glad to see he is not alone in that opinion. Thank you for the compliment. I've posted many WIP's before, but this may be the first one that I actually submit to OC Remix.
  15. This is a fairly original piece. The beat is a collaboration between myself and DJ Kariu (who independently wrote the verses). This beat started off as solely being a Jazzy NYC 99 remix (in fact, the same synth progression was later utilized in my own remix of Jazzy NYC), but was instead retooled to be a hip hop beat for this rap. This song is a tribute to Street Fighter in general as well as a nod to Infinite, who wrote the rap "Third Strike" for Street Fighter III Third Strike. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8Ljn1P896E&feature=PlayList&p=209E9F9E54E347D2&index=7
