  1. for myself (and i know this is true of others) starting a mix and getting a cohesive idea is often really, REALLY hard, whereas the rest of the mix seems to "fall into place" after some basic foundation is laid down to go to.

which isn't to say that mixers don't have long hours with headaches over mastering, final tweaking of sounds, rearranging things that don't work at first, etc etc.

Coming back to the mix a day later with fresh ears is a catastrophe, as well. Some things you'll end up loving, and the rest you'll realize need to be changed. I myself have rarely been 100% completely happy with a mix; there's usually something that could've been changed.

  2. Not that I know of. I know some bands do instrumental passages, but I don't know of any instrumental only black/death metal bands. I know some great black/death metal bands are Belphegor and Behemoth, particularly newer which is closer to death metal.

Behold...the Arctopus is a fantastic instrumetal band. Very chaotic yet there's some melodic passages as well. Probably ear noise to some.

EXOSPACIAL PSIONIC AURA? ESTROGEN/PATHOGEN EXCHANGE PROGRAM? SOME MIST?

    I think I'll concur!

  3. I think a multiple tag system would help in that aspect. It might even help open people up to other genres...for example, if someone searches for "rap" and gets "Oil Ocean (WT-40 Mix)," he might become interested in ethnic, rock, or electronica music as well.

Integrating a web 2.0 function like that could be the sensible way of tackling the situation. If shitty blogs the world wide web over can use it, why not a legit and thriving music community like OCR?

  4. The powers that be think genres are overrated and that you'd be missing out on several quality songs.

Which is very contradicting... Say you got someone who loves Shnabubula's solo piano arrangement "Anachronism" from Secret of Evermore and wants to hear more tracks like that. How? By searching through hundreds upon hundreds of remixes? Yes, genres are overrated but when you keep them down to a point (rock, jazz, classical, etc., and nothing like progressive swedish death metal, neo-psychedelic rock, baroque indie pop) it would probably work out just fine.

  5. Hmm I should have PMed, my bad, I will shortly, however I have just been experimenting with Rydia's theme on my bass guitar and I have found it works rather well with natural harmonics.

That said, I think I'd prefer rydia's theme at this point, because I KNOW what I'd do for good old Zeromus, but what would YOU do? :D

Not sure entirely, I usually mess around with a track for a while until I settle into something it fits with, but for a final battle theme? It's all about grandiose orchestration, heavy synths and pounding drums. Maybe a guitar chug or two.

It's up to you what you wanna grab, man. I'll take what I can get, no problem there. :P

  6. I saw this, FFIV my interest piqued... then I was looking through tracks not done, and I saw the final battle hadn't been touched. I double checked to ensure I wasn't imagining things, and then well there it was.

My question is... is there still time to join. I can usually get WIPs into a good working form quite quickly. So... there we have it. I'm not gonna start quite yet but I have 25 days, which is more then enough. to get a final WIP.

Finishing it, mastering and mixing takes a bit.

Urk, I just PMed OA about that very same thing. :S

  7. I can get stressed out easily if it's hotter than 80 degrees when attempting to record. Something about the temperture and atmosphere of a room that affects the process in a large way.

Recording vocals is something I don't often do, due to some lovely paper thin walls everyone is familiar with. Voice self-consciousness.

The granddaddy of them all would most likely have to be random fatal errors in the middle of an unsaved project. I had FL crash on me just recently after sequencing a sweet synth lead for an original track, leaving me to try and re-create it from memory. Needless to say, it's not the same or quite as good.

Neighbors only piss me off when I'm trying to sleep. You don't need your mexicans to landscape at 7am...

  8. Can I request a change from Nathan Rich to nrich? I opted to register with my real name to ensure that if I had a remix submitted to the site, it would be under my name and not an alias, basically for last.fm scrobbling purposes, but I saw that a few others (like Jeremy Robson) didn't have that problem. Thankssss

  9. Lose the square wave post-intro and incorporate more of that sweet lead synth you have going on in the second half. The drums sound great and should be brought to the front a little more with some extra variation, as with some of the basic structure of track itself. Also, maybe layer some soft synths on the final verses to strengthen the climax?

It's a really strong track, and I'd love to hear it cleaned up and on OCR in the near future.

  10. so you're exporting from FL into a wav, then you're importing that wav back into FL for mastering, then you're exporting directly to mp3 from FL??

it's mostly agreed that it's a better idea to convert to mp3 separately once you have your final .wav export. You can use the LAME mp3 encoder for this, or something else if you wish. This will also isolate the problem to see whether it's your mastering, or if its your compression.

Good method to use an external LAME encoder. I encountered noticeable differences between FL exports and LAME exports, mainly with the bass and how FL muddies it a bit.
