It plays okay-ly imo. I mean, Gold Rush plays poorly with 12v12 yet it's in rotation and is played frequently. Zing! I suggested cp_freight because it's a good 5-cp map and it's fairly well known. I haven't played enough of it to make a judgment call on how well it works in most pubs. It was just an idea. May I suggest cp_stag? I rarely see it in server rotations but it is a good map; I've always liked the map. Don't know what most people think of it, though.

When teams have a good class make-up, players on both sides who will risk going for intel and balanced teams so that nobody is rolling each other, then ctf_sawmill is better than koth_sawmill. I've seen games of ctf_sawmill go very well and I've seen them be a borefest. But koth_sawmill is always the same; an infinite chokepoint that gets captured by a good team and stays that way. I notice that we have two custom 5-cp maps, cp_waste and cp_follower. Both are pretty good but we might consider adding cp_freight, which I consider to be a good map. I know a lot of people here have mixed feelings regarding 5-cp maps for whatever reason but people still seem to have fun as long as teams are fair and the game is moving along. I guess we already have a lot of 5-cp maps in rotation and I'm probably pushing my luck by recommending another one but I felt I should bring it up. Heck, I would have suggested cp_stag but I knew that one would get shot down.

I was messing with the FaN today to force myself to learn shot conservation (when you only have two shots you learn to make them count). When I switched back to scatter it seemed like it had worked and helped me a bit. I need to get a semi-decent mouse (my current one sucks) to really start using Scout well IMO. Probably will order one fairly shortly. After that I'll have no excuse for playing badly. Eventually I'd like to get into pugs and, if I manage to get good enough, scrims. I'd play Scout with the option of going Pyro if the situation called for it(and it apparently does, sometimes). But for now I suck.

Can I get an invite to the OCR Steam group and reserved slot privileges? Last night it broke my heart getting booted for the reserved slot so many times when all I wanted to do was play some TF2 and relax. Literally, my heart is broken now. It will never heal. If you need 'it' here 'it' is: http://steamcommunity.com/id/chivesontheweb Why is it that whenever you want to get better by playing a specific class everybody else on the team decides they want to play that class too? I start as the first and only Scout on a map and by the time I die we have three others. It's just how the world works.

Why does everyone have to take debate the wrong way? I don't think anybody said anything about server-imposed Demoman limitations on OCR. If somebody did, sorry, I just missed it. OP was a bad choice of word. I never meant it too negatively, like "OMG demo is so broken nerf now". If you really are tired of getting owned by Demomanz just wait for the Demoman update. Then 70% of all pubbers will use crappy unlock weapons and will be easy to take down. On a similar note, I cannot wait for the Soldier update. Here's to an inferior alternative to the shotgun that will make my Pyro-ing much, much easier!
-
If pipes couldn't do direct hits Demoman would lose too much. That's his defense against incoming scouts and other close range hooligans. Even now nailing a good scout in the face with the nade launcher while he's in close range is easier said than done. Demo doesn't have the typical hitscan shotgun to defend himself, he has two projectile weapons and a bottle. No, if you really want to nerf him (unnecessary imo but...) you'd have to do something else.

Now that's just not true. People play what they want to play. You think I play Pyro so much because he's the bestest and strongestest class ever? No. I'm pretty sure most pub players play whatever class they want with little regard to if it's overpowered or not. Or if it's actually helping the team or not... I accept that Demoman is OP. It's not something I think needs to be fixed. All things considered, TF2 has pretty good balance. If you look at other games like Brawl with OP OP OP Meta-Knight it helps breaks the game because if you pick Ganondorf and play someone at the same skill level (I'm assuming a moderately-high level) who is using Meta-Knight, you're screwed. Did I mention that I think Scouts are also OP? Would I want the game any other way? No. Personally, I think Valve should focus more on bringing depth to 'the other classes'. And they are. Heavy is getting a spiffy new pair of gloves, along with the sandvich-toss. Maybe they'll give another toy for him. Maybe. Engineer might need something but we still have the Engineer update so I won't worry much about that one yet. Valve added compression blast to Pyro which is my favorite tool in TF2. Anyone who has played with me much knows I'm a compression blast fiend. I'm addicted and can never get enough. Still, Pyro could benefit from some sort of burst damage with his flamethrower to encourage non W+M1 tactics and if Pyro could get some form of advanced mobility to aid in getting into ambush position, even if just the Backburner had it, I'd be happy. Most of you will probably disagree with the Pyro stuff. Oh well, I can dream.
-
Overly versatile, for sure. His two primaries dish out damage incredibly. If he could defend a medic better I'm sure he'd be the main component of 6 vs. 6 games. Well...I guess sticky-jumping isn't as immediately available as soldier so he is less mobile...maybe? I don't know what I'm talking about anymore. I'll restart. Demoman is incredibly versatile with his combination of both nades and stickies. He can be both an offensive and defensive powerhouse. Especially in pubs. Oh god, especially in pubs.
-
Double jumping rarely will help you in the long run. I'd use airblast as a counter point, soon as the scout is in the air he becomes an easy target. Just juggle him with cb until bonk wears off and bam, he's contained and ready for his killing. And considering the number of people playing Pyro on any given map, yeah, you get the idea. Of course, most Pyros would never do this so that point isn't very applicable... :/ I still say that Bonk is situational. I don't feel like typing out one of my huge TF2 essays right now, though. Maybe at the first cp Bonk can be reliably helpful but by the second point he has nowhere to go once he uses Bonk to dodge the sentries. It's a byproduct of it. Sure, a Scout could do that on any map but on Dustbowl he is more limited in how he can approach. See previous rambling.
-
Powerlord has obviously never played TF2 before. All jokes aside, the chances of that Scout surviving for very long are pretty low. Much like when someone discovers a spy, when the team sees a Scout on the influence of Bonk they simply cannot resist making sure he dies by flocking around him. I suppose such a distraction could, in itself, be useful but beyond very situational situations (ohohohoho) such as lack of defense set up by RED such as sentries and heavy classes, low player counts that keep the scout from running into instant death around every and all corners and extremely unlikely cases of team coordination and communication, the Scout and Dustbowl simply do not mix. I think that's what Valve wanted to help solve with the Scout unlocks, with all the little tools such as the FaN triple jump, BONK to get passed sentries and Sandman at chokepoints and other situations, but it doesn't appear to have really worked. btw I hate Gold Rush. @Bleck, you don't think that all classes should be useful on all maps? Personally, I think that if a class is rendered nearly useless because of a map's design it just might be a bad map. Depends on how you look at it, I guess.
-
Is there something else a Scout can do on such a map? Go get Sandman and spam it at the chokepoint! Yeah! Also, I am in full support of anything that puts a limit on Gold Rush. Every once in a while I do enjoy playing it but OCR has it on way too often. With most servers Dustbowl is the problem map but with us it's Gold Rush. Actually, when Dustbowl comes on it's like a bowl of relief to me. The 2-round max seems like a step in the right direction. If anybody cares to have my opinion, my favorite maps are the five cp maps. Badlands and granary being my most favorite. They both see fair amount of play on OCR but usually they get rtv'd off to Badwater before I can have too much fun.

I've considered donating for the reserved slot. Maybe next month, maybe. I just know as soon as I get into reserved slot the server is going to go into 24/7 Gold Rush mode and I won't get a chance to use it. If you didn't notice already, I don't like Gold Rush. The classes I play(at this point, Pyro and Scout) really don't succeed in the area of chokepoint spam. And that's what Gold Rush is. Maybe I need to play Demoman more?
-
Haha, I get this from people all the time. I understand that Pyro has severe limitations and that I'll have much more versatility and potential with other classes. But I like Pyro and I like surprising players with clever tactics and compression blast use. I'm looking into learning one of the comp classes (Scout or Demoman) but I think Pyro is my main man for life. And yes, man. Well, I thought about it whenever I recorded something but in the end I like to include the in-game voice chat. My frag video is pretty light-hearted and I never take it too seriously (see; running into level one sentry gun) and the voice chat works into that. Also, on a lot of my videos, such as my "Fun on the OCR" videos, the voice chat MAKES the video. Oh no, why did you have to say that?! I haven't used the flare gun in weeks. I love it, yes, but shotgun is pretty darn cool. I'll probably switch periodically. Also, aren't you the soldier who crit rockets me after my Badwater Scout kill? It's always the crit rockets that are impossible to reflect... That game on nucleus was probably the best game of Pyro I've played in my entire life. I owned and had so many great kills. But you probably could tell all this, considering Nucleus is half the video. I've only been getting decent at pipe reflects as of recently. I'm sorry for your lost.

Guys I totally made a Pyro frag video(yeah I know but go with it) and OCR footage is included. It is called 'Diabolical Daddy'. Some are the subject of 'frags', including... [lions]bonzai RED F4T4L Abyss Considering this is OCR, I think some of you will quite enjoy the song I've selected. Leave comments and ratings. Really, I put effort into this and want to know what other people think. ...by the way I record almost every game I play so if you know I saw something you want uploaded, let me know right then and there (remember, I'm Diatomic Daddy). I'll see what I can do. I've been to a lot of servers in my time in TF2 and OCR really has become one of my favorites. Even with your insistence on playing Gold Rush and Turbine 24/7 I manage to have fun because of the hilarious mic talk and apparent focus on fun.
-
Well, if that was a huge problem you guys could do what other servers do and kick people who attack and kill during setup. OCR is a pretty 'for fun' server and unless it's RED or other people with magical sticky kill abilities I don't think it would be too bad. Why does cp_well even have setup? As far as I can remember, none of the other 5-cp maps do. Why am I just noticing this now?
-
As far as I can tell, this seems like a good idea. Also, I've noticed that cp_well never pops up in rotation. I know that 5-cp maps aren't the most popular maps ever but that map isn't bad and I think some of us would enjoy playing it from time to time. People would still be able to rtv us back to goldrush/badwater/turbine with relative ease. Just a thought.

The decision to add class limits really comes down to how much this server considers our all-talk pub-play 'srs bsns'. Do we take the game so seriously that we have to force people to play a certain way just because it's the efficient and 'correct' way to play? When I was just starting out in TF2 my favorite class was Spy. I loved the idea of infiltrating the enemy base and killing off key targets and even though I was terrible and did not get many kills I was having fun. Eventually I started feeling guilty about just playing classes that I wasn't experienced enough to be credit to team with. During these period I would play Medic nearly every round because nobody else would bother playing medic. I made a sacrifice to help my team and that sacrifice was fun. I have a good friend who goes by the name Supe. You might have seen on the server a couple times playing a mean Scout. He's the one who introduced me to TF2 way back when I had never played a 'real' FPS before in my entire life. One day, in a casual chat, I brought up how my favorite class was Spy but that I never played as one because I was no good and could better serve my team as a Medic. He told me that I shouldn't even bother playing Medic if I'm not having fun. Sure, being without a medic is a severe disadvantage for the team but the whole point of playing is to have fun. It's not like I was in the competitive TF2 scene, playing to win, I was in casual pubs with casual players, playing for fun. So I started playing Spy whenever I wanted to, regardless of the rest of the team. As long as I was having fun it didn't matter that much what the rest of the team was doing. I expected the rest of my team to play for fun as well. Nowadays I play differently but my objective is still the same; have fun. Being forced to play a certain way isn't fun. Quick, the Medic is using his Blutsauger too much! Better kick him off the server. Oh no, half the team went Sniper. Better add a class limit to keep them in check. Better tighten the leashes. Better get a shock collar on these players. They might just be bad. Sure, winning is fun. But how far do you have to go to ensure that other players don't ruin the team's chances or winning? Personally, I have the most fun being credit to team. Have you noticed that, as a Pyro, I extinguish practically everybody I come across, ammo reserves permitting? (EDIT: Just in case you don't know who I am, I'm Diatomic Daddy) That's because being helpful is fun to me. I do have fun playing with a good team with perfect class balance. But that's up to the people playing to decide, not the people who have control of the server. The only time I don't have fun is when our team is getting completely rolled by another team. That's when the higher powers might need to step in. Maybe. tl;dr Like cleaning your room, being forced to play a certain way isn't fun simply because you're being forced. Playing that way by your own free will is often a rewarding experience and sometimes you find that old Gameboy game you thought you had lost forever hiding underneath your bed.
