  1. I love the style of this. It sounds very japanese with the bells and guitar. This has too much reverb though. I also believe the transition points aren't very smooth. The others have covered the other technical issues I have with this mix.

Not a bad mix, some parts are very nice. It just needs more polishing. I would also suggest that this mix be more cohesive. Several sections sound like different mixes just stuck together. This needs more elements to tie the mix together.

  2. I'm a bit borderline on this. Some parts sounded really cool and some parts just sounded like I've heard this over and over. Most of the time this sounds like generic trance. I agree with protricity's view on this.

During the 3 loud sections of this mix, there's a lot of what sounds like some kind of audio glitch and it's fairly annoying on headphones. This isn't a bad mix. I enjoyed a number parts of this mix especially the ending parts where you have more complex things going on, but there's not much else here that's stands out and the technical problems with this mix make it a borderline NO from me. Add more creativity, and unique work on the synths and this would be a yes.

  3. I agree, this follows closely with the original. This needs more arrangement. It's almost not fair to compare this to the original since that was so good. This is a pretty pleasant mix, I think it needs more arrangement for more serious consideration. The last section of the mix is beautiful. Expand on these ideas. Make the whole mix sound like it did in the end. Nice mix, but this needs more.

  4. I agree with some of the criticism the other judges said of this mix. The first minute isn't too great. But as the mix progresses the playing and arrangement gets better and better. I like how the mix changes variations very smoothly. The section at 1:50-2:00 is just great. From then until the end is the strength of this mix. I love the performance here.

I think the mastering or possibly the recording here is a weakpoint. I would have loved a stronger and sharper bass and more clarity through the whole mix as well. The bass and treble are a bit cloudy. Watch your levels, I hear a bit of distortion especially early on with the stronger notes. Very nice ending. There's some issues here, but the highlighted sections make up for it, so I will give it a borderline YES.

  5. Excellent ideas here as this is a very unique mix. I think the mixing on this one is very weak though. The melody is at times either nonexistent or not as prominent as it should be. Something about this sounds disorienting though. Also the transition point at 2:39 isn't too good. There's some parts of the mix that don't really sound that great, and others that sound terrific. The bassline in the sections at :55 and is repeated throughout most of the mix got on my nerves after a while. Nice job on the arrangement. So due to the interesting arrangement, this gets a borderline YES.

  6. I enjoyed this piece on a musical level. I like your style. There are a lot of problems here that the other judges mentioned that bar this from going through. The main one is the muddy, and cloudy quality. It sounds too muzzled, there's no clarity.

This also needs more work on the arrangement level and bringing it all together. More polish is needed. I hope you come back to this and fix up the technical problems.

  7. I remember hearing several wips of this while it was in the compositional stages and I have to say the end result is very satisfying.

The vibe throughout is nothing short of happy, uplifting and celebratory. Instrument selection is perfect. I especially love the piano and bells. This is especially obvious in one of my favorite sections around 1:20. Transition points throughout are silky smooth. At around midway the best section with the bass and bongo/congo appears. Really great work there. The bass and drumwork is consistently good and appropriate throughout.

One of your better mixes, nice job.

  8. I agree with protricity on the override. But I felt for the mixer's sake a second opinion might be helpful.

There's almost no arrangement here, other than including the occasional sound effects here and there. My main problem with this mix that just ruins the experience is the ugly sounding guitar that is constantly there throughout the mix. At times it is very ear piercing at the higher notes.

This needs a lot of work in the ideas and compositional concept. Better instruments that aren't so grating, and some drumwork. This mix sounds like a conservative arrangement of the piece, built around a lot of sound effects which don't really work in my opinion.

There are some good ideas here, and it does take talent to put these together, but this needs a lot more polish and effort in the execution department.

  9. This is excellent as far as the idea goes. So much creativity in this one. I wish I could pass this, but there's a lot of problems here as noted by other judges. There's also a lot of clipping that starts at 1:50. Also I suggest making the flute more upfront in the mix. Take note of the other judges' recommendations. I'd love to pass this, when it's a bit more polished. Please work on this one more.

  10. Pretty cool mix. I like the piano sections, I think it works for this mix. I find the main problem in this mix for me is it just feels repetitive, there is nothing that stands out too much in the middle sections. Great intro and ending, now build on that. The ending concept is interesting. There's some clicks and pops around :53 and 1:43. Not too big a problem, but it might be something to look into if you decide to work on this again. A lot of great concepts here, but it needs more polishing.

  11. If you mixed in DKC with some kind of anime music like Fushigi Yugi, this might be the result. I think I'll borrow a page out of the wingless book, and be a patron saint of second chances with this one.

There is something that speaks to me with this mix, there is some kind of emotion here that I can't deny. The ugly trance bass sounds bad. But the pads and the beautiful synth lead are just so inviting and pleasant. The vibes add a nice touch of serenity as well.

Not a great mix and I am borderline on this, but there is a lot of heart in this simple mix that makes it a YES for me. I am definitely keeping this.

  12. Thanks to those who have commented on the piece. Freemind and I appreciate it. :)

Most remixes I hear using piano usually suffer from the "midi" effect, with not enough effort put into the performance. But this sounds like it was played or sequenced by a pianist who understands dynamics.

We both did. I think I remember Freemind played it in live as a midi recording. I really enjoy his piano style, it reminds me of barabas or winston. I then took the piano midi from the reason file recording and did modifications of my own with the velocity one stalk at a time to give it a greater sense of dynamics and emotion. I'm glad our hard work payed off, if even a little. ^_^

  13. Nice to see this one up. Battle of Olympus might have been my favorite game on the nes. I really am glad that I got to work with Freemind again, especially on this particular piece. Listening to this mix transports me to a greek island. I hope that somehow Freemind and I are able to share that feeling with the listeners.

I think you're right in that it is more slanted towards that aspect. The greeks used four words to define love as far as I understand it, eros, phileo, storge and agape. Eros is also the god of love which was the origin of the word. The title came about when I asked freemind exactly what Eros was. I also think Eros sounds cooler than phileo. :) Freemind can probably explain it since he is the greek here.

Thanks to the judges and to djp also. :)

  14. Pretty decent, but this is fairly repetitive. There's nothing really terribly wrong with the mix for me, but there's nothing here that stands out either. I do like the section around 1:40. That caught my attention somewhat.

This really needs more attention paid to the concept, composition and execution if you want something to stand out. Average production values. Drumwork is pretty nice at the very beginning and then it develops into something more generic sounding.

  15. I agree with both votes, but to me the most annoying part of this mix is how it sounds. It sounds like you put a low pass eq on the whole mix. It is not very pleasant to listen to when it sounds so unbalanced like this.

I like a lot of the concepts of this mix though, like the strumming guitars and the 80s rock drums. I suggest you work on this mix more, there are a lot of good ideas here waiting to be explored.

    NO

  16. This is a surprise. Vigilante is right about this though, so there really is not more to add to what he said. The volume needs to be louder, and I think this could benefit from some eq work, it sounds pretty dull. It needs more sparkle and air.

This is not passable at its current state, but it's pretty nice and interesting given it's a solo flute mix. Definitely post it in the OCR Works In Progress/Completed forum. I'm sure it'll find a following on the boards.
