  1. Thanks for all the comments ya'll. I knew people would love XPRTNovice's saxiness. : D I'm actually surprised that people liked the piano stuff seeing the flack it got from some of the judges. I personally enjoyed it myself, and was hoping everyone else would : D

Nice work! Clannad has some very good music and I hope it influences more mixes.

I requested someone actually make a Clannad remix a while back, seeing as pretty much the whole soundtrack (OP and ED included) comes from the game that it was based off of.

I don't like I"m cool enough to touch something like Dango Daikazoku. Yet.

  2. The saxophone is indeed nice. The entire arrangement stands out to me as being quite beautiful, though. It has a calm, almost mystical feel to it. This is a very nice mix!

Side note: I previewed on Youtube first, and I think there might be something wrong with the version there. Around the piano solo segment there was a lot of "fuzzing" and the song occasionally dropped out entirely.

The fuzzing should be in the original song too. It was something with my Piano sample that would happen if it were to hold onto the notes for too long. I EQ'd as much as I could out but it's still noticeable. Not sure about the dropping out, though.

I do wish I could re-do the drums on this one now. They'd be like, 1000x better.

  3. I'm surprised people would hate Metroid Other M's music to begin with. The hate for the game, I can understand completely, but the music was pretty good. I especially liked the title theme piano.

It definitely doesn't rise up to Kenji Yamamoto's work on the series but it wasn't bad by any means.

  4. I feel like maybe your problem is more with the instrumentation itself rather than the composition Brandon? Because ReMixing IS sampling a section of a game tune to your own piece of music (composition). And in the case of samples that people buy and have consumer rights to use then those aren't even part of a published or completed work, just an idea that's been put into a small WAV file. Very similar to something like a snare sample, or cymbal sample, or a flute sample, guitar sample, synth preset, etc. I don't see any major problem using those either since most samples those now a days.

Really it just seems like you're making a big deal out of something that isn't. :/

  5. Don't see a problem here. Anybody can play a 4 second harp loop.

A good composer can make something out of that loop. Kind of like those artists who take stuff from garbage cans and makes really cool stuff with it.

edit: i sincerely hope you wouldn't use that kind logic to crap on decades of good hip-hop, would you Brandon?

    cause i'd be mad.

  6. Interesting concept.

I do take issue with your decision to encode mp3s on your own. Why can't we encode ourselves? Even though it is technical, this could affect the artistic outcome of the track. Encoding decisions should be left up to the artists themselves.

All past compo's have done this. I think it's basically keep things equal across the whole compo. I think it's a good rule to have as it doesn't give any one track a technical advantage over the other.

  7. I'm definitely going to sign up 'cause I"m not having any luck completing songs for merely hobby purposes anymore. I think deadlines and competition really help.

It sucks you're only gonna allow character themes 'cause overworld themes are just too good sometimes D: but 'tis ok.

I hope this all works out (it should, because <3 <3 <3 RPG's) I'm going to go for something from an NIS game. Yay for more OCR obscurity : D

    Female Villager(s) confirmed!!

    yay,

i'm glad they're giving the option to change up a characters look completely through costumes. that's something project m did and it was really cool. it makes battles with the same characters easier.

  9. I'm having trouble getting in touch with TGH, but I'm sure I'll get in touch before the deadline. I"m just curious, if it comes down to it, would the MP3 by itself be ok? I'm pretty sure by itself if it's up to submission standards to the site, I'm just not sure if TGH even has the project file anymore since it was so long ago. He might, but might not.

I know the Links Awakening had it to where some songs didn't have WAV's available at submission and was wondering if that'd work here (if it wasn't available)

  10. I think it'd make a lot more sense to things like that, so probably. It made things a bit easier sure but I feel like a lot of things in the past games were used to make it more accessible and honestly less boring (like XP share mechanics).

I'm really curious how they're going to go about sea travel and diving. Hoenn is pretty much half made up of sea iirc, so they should do something to really spice things up with sea travel. No ideas off the top of my head but it could make the experience 100x better if they changed how things were done.

They should seriously take this oppurtunity to change a bunch of things rather than just dropping Hoenn into the current engine like they seemed to do with the past two games.. Introduce new mechanics, or maybe change the landscapes to be a lot more natural than before. Hoenn was a very pretty looking region so graphics are going to mean a lot to the game.
