  1. Please don't mind me overly critical to your composition. All of what I say is to better you composition/production

So, the intro/beginning doesn't really capture me at all. It just starts and doesn't really go anywhere dynamically, and to me was a rather bland intro. You have the tones in the back, but the drums in my opinion are not strong or lively enough.

The piano you are using needs LOTS of velocity alteration. Right now it just sounds like your pounding the same chord over and over in the background---which you are, but you have to add interest and change to the part to make it a bit cooler and slicker. Right now the piano sounds too much like you just pressed the "piano" button in Garageband, so definitely spend some EQ time there. Ahahahaha.

I felt like this song didn't really do too much, and it is very conservative. I mean, the groove's fine, but the piece itself is very boring and feels like a background piece. You've really got to add some personality to this slate you've been given.

I'd explore the sounds you can create with the Audio Unit effects; those are very helpful. Play with the adjustments on the settings you have to add more interest to the track. I'm not sure where the melody is in this cuz this entire theme is so repetitive, so make sure to pronounce that; I didn't hear a very distinct place where the "pan flute melody" came in, and that needs to be ever present and engaging. Add some real changes to this song and make it your own! This mix can shine if you express yourself and make it more original and involved!

  2. This is a bit different from my other stuff. Instead of sticking with the normal time signature of 4/4, I went with the more difficult way and decided to convert the song into a new time signature. I LOVE working in odd times, so I chose 7/4 as the time signature to put the song in. And personally, I am diggin' the results so far.

However, this obviously needs a lot of work--primarily, EQ-wise. I am planning to fill out the background chords a bit more, because I think that is definitely what it needs, but I am posting it here to seek EQ tips and tricks and stuff from you. I need your feedback to help me improve this song! So please, give it a listen!

(Btw, the very ending where you hear a voice on the fade out is just me being stupid. Don't pay attention to it; it won't be there in the real version)

  3. So a long time ago I created a TERRIBLE remix of the Vs Champion Cynthia theme (I made it when I was just starting out on Garageband.) Now, about two years later I decided to revisit the song and made a new remixed version of the Cynthia battle. I personally like a lot and would like to improve the mix to get it to the appropriate level for OCRemix. So please, take a listen, and as with all remixes, be sure to listen with headphones for the full experience.

  4. Not to shoot you down in flames >< But i have a pretty good set of headphones and the levels were still an issue :(

Don't get me wrong it's still an awesome track :)

Naw dude don't worry I understand. Like I said, working on the levels. It happened in compression when it went to iTunes that the track got quieter, but still gotta tweak everything else to get the levels right. Workin on it :)

  5. You can hear it if you're on headphones. :) There's kind of a phaser effect throughout the quiet section, and some low pads. Then there's an oscillating 8-bit synth.

The bass that comes in IS quite high, though. Lower that to about 60% its original, and pump up the other stuff. Bass shouldn't be overwhelming.

Just realized that not everyone uses headphones......why not? They catch so much more detail. That's what all of my remixes are optimized for, headphones.

  6. I really like the feel of this track, i mean i REALLY like it, it's kinda neo-futuristic, but retro at the same time.

I'm a really big Pokémon fan but this is not one of my favourite source tracks, however i do approve of this remix haha.

I love the Lunar Knights-esque breakbeats at around 1:50.

But the levels.. :| The levels need sorting, it felt like there was no lead, like it was building up to something that never happened.

    Nice track though :)

Haha as addressed previously, I am working on those levels, along with a few other things as well. :) Stay tuned!

  7. So this is just me messing around, but in this version, I played around with the fact that Tower of Heaven sounds like Secret of the Forest from Chrono Trigger. As such, I added a bit of it for the bridge of the song starting at about 3:10. This adds a new song to the mix but at the same time keeps the same sort of flow. I like what came out from this, considering the random addition to the song last night when I had the idea, but give me your opinion as to whether you like this version or the older version (5.1) better.

  8. Here is what I did in this version:

I added some bongos at the end of the song in the outro.

I tried fixing the "muddiness" mentioned by AA in the previous post at 1:06, I hope it worked, it sounds ok to me.

I fixed a few small notes here and there.

Well, I am content with this version being the "final version". It is varied enough, I have no problem with it's length, and I haven't gotten much criticism on anything else. It will now be "Finished" but constructive criticism would still be greatly appreciated as I will still be working on it for a few days to a week, that is, until I consider it ready for mod review.

Much better! No more muddiness there! I think this is definitely ready for a mod review!

  9. Great piece Joe! A rather interesting take on a well known classic. :D

The blend at 1:01 is rather muddy there, just because of the combination of the highs and lows; I see the effect you're going for there, but maybe bring the bass EQ down just a little bit to add a little bit more clarity.

Aside from that the piece comes together very well! It is in fact very very soothing. I especially compliment the piano and pan flute; they are the key elements that truly add a more ambient feel to this arrangement. I've never really heard an artist take this sort of approach to this song. Great job arranging this sir!

  10. So I perfected some of the newly added melody parts by changing some of the partials to make them more appealing. I also added 2% more delay to the lead which made a surprisingly big difference depth-wise.

I adjusted the drums a little bit again, but not by much really. Just a few volume things.

I made the piano velocities a bit more dramatic where they were lacking before, so now the piano sits just a bit stronger in the overall remix.

Feedback is appreciated; getting closer and closer to the final product! :D

  11. So now I have worked out a solid place for more source: I added in another verse at the end, with bits of variation thrown in. I am a jazz musician, so that's just what I do :D

I have adjusted the piano EQ to have a more full sound but also adjusted the bass EQ so that it was less muddy. I also found another source of mud which was a distorted piano in the background and I adjusted that.

As for drums, working on better samples (of course I am never really the one to feature my drums). I still do personally like the drums for being simplistic. I did turn them up a little bit as to give them a little more kick and drive, and EQd them a bit more.

Tell me what you think guys! :D

  12. So here's a newer version, with updated drums and esp. EQ. I worked on getting the bass up on the drums as well as the EQ on them. I worked to make them sound more intense.

I am satisfied with the amount of source I have in the song; anymore would be repetitive. I use the chords of the source and the source itself for most of the remix, so.....yeah. I'm going to keep it; I'm not going to change that aspect of it.

    Here is the updated version:

  13. Alrighty, version 3. Now, I wanted to keep the basic beat, because honestly, I like the way it felt; slow and easy. At the same time, I made sure to add lots of intensity, to make the drum more exciting, esp. the snare.

As for the lead, I improved the blend and melding with the others; definitely not as sharply cutting through the mix as before. It melds a lot better with the rest of the sounds. I amped up the wetness and reverb a bit.

FILE NOW IN MP3 FORMAT :D

  14. The reverb helped, but it still is quite piercing. Some modulation on the very long stretches (as well as some periodic silent 'spaces' to break the phrases apart) would help quite a bit. Lowering the volume would also help a lot - there are some sections that are lower already and they work great.
I see what you're saying there; I was working with the volume a bit but wasn't entirely sure if I should bring it down as I didn't want the other instruments entirely overshadowing it. The volume's an easy fix; as for the sharpness, I will add some space to the part to make it less of a constant sound stream
I think the drumset works better than before, but the pattern is pretty bland, still (and that can't be fixed by changing the program, unfortunately). I suspect they need a complete makeover, here.

Alright, will revamp the drums, though I will probably keep the FL sound. The whole thing was pretty much for the sound of the drums, not so much the pattern, but I will definitely work on that.

And yeah, the format is pretty inconvenient. Change it to an Mp3 and Box.net will automatically play the track in the browser, which is a lot more convenient.

Oh, so sorry about that! Odd.....before it was working perfectly with M4A....I'll see what I can do.

  15. Forth.

Why is it in such an odd format to, .m4a? Not bad stuff, some of the lead work is pretty good, especially when it comes to the arps 'n whatnot. On all other fronts, I agree with Gario.

Apparently that is the format of iTunes songs.....and you listened to the updated version with the new drums?
