  1. lmao, california girls.

man i really love those pizzacato (i think?) strings. the entire soundscape really reminds me of owen pallet for some reason.

i didn't think it could be better but you weren't joking when you told me you've made an improved version.

i'm very biased about my orchestral songs, but this will surely end up in my favorites playlist as it grows on me. superb job

  2. ooooh snap, dude i'm sorry man. i have absolutely no idea what the hell i was thinking when i posted that (but that was back when my posting etiquette was much stupider).

yeah, so i was browsing the internet for some vectorman remixes for inspiration and ideas, and i managed to stop by here again.

i think what i meant back then was that the vectorman music was really basic/minimal so i was trying to suggest that you add more variation and stuff, but my old post makes no sense because this is legitimately complex and interesting enough. also, you could try playing around with the panning of the lead synths at 2:08.

so the only real crits i have is that the intro from the first theme to the second theme (around 0:30ish) sounds a bit too quick. it wouldn't hurt to repeat that whole first section another time since that intro groove is just too nasty to only allow 30 seconds.

the low bass end could use a bit more love, but it's not too bad in my opinion.

props-wise i love the drum patterns (especially the beat breakdowns around 1:30-1:50ish and 3:30-3:57) and hooooooly jizz, the synths from 4:11 to the end are soooooooooo juicy and in your face; now i think i probably love that part much more than the mid-section. aaaaaaawwww yeah, the outro synth and claps were slick as well and the detuning melting sounds at the end were so manly.

daaaaayum, this is some crazy high class stuff in here. sorry for posting like an ass last time, but you should definitely come back at this or mix some more tunes because this is really good.

dunno wtf i was thinking back then:tomatoface:

  3. Wowww... I was expecting Sir Jordanius' silky smooth voice to take this one... Anyway so happy the matches all were so close! Great effort by everyone and also thanks to everyone who voted for me!!

Can't wait to listen to those lizard remixes!!!

naw dawg, the internet connection over here is so wikki wikki whack and i doubt i'll be back in the next few days, so either way i wouldn't even be able to come up with a passable arrangement..... just like last time. :<

(translation: aw fuck you maaaaane, next time i'm bringing my whole damn crew to bust a musical cap all up in you mane, shiiiiit.these pancakes don't even know me, mane)

seriously, i tried downloading all of the rounds to show my cousin some of em, and the download time for each zip was about 2+ hours. -_-

    radio sega? aaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwww yyyyyeeeeeeah :nicework:

Strader vs. AMT, i don't think my body is ready. i'll try to listen and vote for the sonic round 2 once i get back.

  4. alright, minireview time

    Arceace vs. halc:

aw yeah, arceace. right from the beginning i'm digging the drum beat and the sporadic samples and sonic blips. I've never been much of a fan of echo'd pianos because it gives me a disney princess vibe, but the overall production balance is so crisp that it's not a bother. not once does the song feel redundant, and the melodic treatment is so damn catchy. totally digging all the breakdowns and parts where the synths and drums are slowly busting out of the filters. not much crits here, but it would've been nice to hear a few more sporadic percussion later on in the song or at least some more of the glitchy sonic blips.

over all, very nice. could use a bit more variation, but i dig it.

i totally dig the soundscape and overall texture, it feels very atmospheric and blissful.

gooooood daaaayyyyum, halc with the phat sampling and electrohop grooves once again. the source tune is delicious in itself, but i was bobbing my head so hard to the part around 1:00 and 2:47. i dunno the exact sound, but i love how you used the item box explosion thingy kind of like a huge ambient sssspppppssssshhhh cymbal. lol, 3:36, killin it with them stutters. dunno if this is vopm or sn-emu or whatever, but that bass line and that drum beat is head-bopperific. that brrrrriiiddddiiillliiingaliningalingalingaling sound is so juicy (you know what i'm talking about). only gripe though is that 2:28ish to about 2:47 sounded uber boring and somewhat unnecessary, and it just gave me a serial anime filler kind of vibe. :<

    ---------------------

    brandon strader vs. tuberz mcgee:

i knew this one was going to be tough since i'm supadupa aroused by both of these fellas music, and in the end i just flipped a coin to make my choice.

strader, ooooooh yeah dawg, it's always refreshing to hear your more post-rock singing since it's very angelic and fulfilling, imo. i'm just going to go ahead and skip to the gripe: around 3:30.... god man, everytime i hear that particular 90s/80s epiano sound it's just bonerkill to me, but meh that's just my preference. i totally adore how the mixing/playing of the sax in the beginning sounds so malleable that it could faintly pass as a synth, viola, or even a human voice; dunno how many different layers you stacked to get that sound, but it totally paid off man. you did an incredibly fine job with this and although we all respect your metal chops, it's always a treat to hear your more alternative-rock stuff. great mixing of the sources by the way, it didn't feel like "oh, now this is source A and this is clearly source B," it just felt like one unified idea.

tuberz, maaaannnn i've got to start leeching off of you and strader because your guitar textures and soundscapes are so mesmerizing and encompassing. dunno if the inspiration was supposed to be obvious, but i'm getting heavy TRTS vibes from this (or any big main post/alt rock name). i feel like the low, backgroundish treatment of the drums was a putoff at first but when the mutant half step glitchy drums kick in i see what you were going for and it worked well. main gripe, fade out ending, but it's understandable. fadeouts are rarely ever tolerated/enjoyed anyways.

man, this was definitely the hardest choice so far because it seemed like both mixers went for the "if-edgar-allan-poe-were-in-a-garage-band" sentimental approach. lovely textures and melodic treatment, huge kudos for the both of ya. i think it's awesome that i had to use a coin just to decide since i thoroughly enjoyed them both. definitely going on my personal playlist.

    ------------------------

    AMT vs. urdailywater:

AMT, hell fucking yeah. i mean, what more is there to say? no gripes here at all. imo, it's fricken perfect. seamless combining of the sources and captivating arrangement, i love it. 1000000/10.

urdailywater, niiiiiice very chill and mellow. what's with all these sentimental, bittersweet arrangements to sonic tunes? this mix probably made that girl in your sig cry a huge puddle.

those ambient noises and whooshing effects totally make the song.

very dreamy and ethereal sounding. man... dunno if it's just me but this has an extremely somber, almost tragic-loss vibe to it.

    veeeeeery beautiful and serene.

    --------------------------------------------

    gario vs. enigami:

gario, those gated synths are so aurally juicy! lol, i love those retro "go wikkiwikki come on!" sounds. short and sweet, true to it's name, the mix starts aggressive immediately and launches the listener until they're just floating in the space of the post-adrenaline rush by the end of the song. it would've been nice to occasionally run the gated synth thing through a really thick filter or wah effect instead of just having it pan back and forth, but it sounds good nonetheless.

enigami, hooooooooooooooly shit mane! don't even fuck with me like that! :lmassoff: anytime i hear that windows error sound i come close to shitting my pants... oh god nice job, definitely got the listener's attention.

edit: oooooh nevermind, reading through some of the other comments now. ah, i see you had a twist of bad fortune. man, that bites, but i'm sure the main idea was ridiculously awesome. at first i was like "cool, a trololol remix" but then i was like "i know that feel, bro." :-(

    ---------------------------------

    Dj mokram vs. wildfire:

dj mokram, well shiiiiyit! this mixer's not playing around. i'm not a fan of megalomania super genre smash morphin time songs that switch up a lot, but this was very interesting and pleasing. i loved the juxtaposition with the harsh synths and the elegant piano, but i do think you could've laid off a bit with some of the vocal clips because it started becoming a bit annoying (...then again, i'm really a fan of listening to sonic's voice actors for more than 3 seconds). awesome synthwork and overall production as well as extensive use of musical imagery, but again the vocal clips were like having too much frosting on an already delicious cake.

wildfire, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWW YYYYEEEEEAAAAHHH. *in a david bowie voice*: now this i can jam to. dat sidechain.... dat groovy bass line.... not even going to lie, this song probably had me head bobbing and fist pumping as hard, if not harder than, briggs' "trash fm" mix. meh, i can't give a full constructive analysis on this since most of my points would be genre bias cockriding, but just know that i totally dig the shit out of this. i actually got up to jam out to this one. :nicework:

mokram's was much more liberal and i feel like he did much more with the sources, but in the end i just have an unfair fetish for those four-on-the-floor beats. ^_^

    ----------------

    syllix vs. sir jungalungavrrrrooooomsdfmklsdjklpsssh:

SYLLIX YOU FUCKING LIAR!!!! you were acting as though you were an electronoob, and i knew it, you snack on killer studio chops every day!

duuuuuude, i totally love that oldschool synthy 80s vibe man... no crits here, another example of exquisite combining of the different sources. nice one mate, very clean and good.

sir jordanius. lol, furry innuendos and random samples. main gripe, several of the sounds and mid eq areas blend in way too much and every time that overly compressed snare drum hits i feel like part of my childhood is being violated. a very different arrangement, and you have to listen closely more than once to catch all the sources, but the overall mixing and mastering could be more refined. also, fakeass brass are fake.... y u no record your real sax and trumpets?

    -------------------

congrats and kudos to everyone, i'll definitely be jamming hard to these during my flight to and fro.

    peace

    jordan

EDIT: forgot these 2 because their respective contenders couldn't make it in time.

chernabogue, niiiiiiice, the initial groove reminds me of kanye's jesus walks (i mean that in a good way. it's a good way).

man, when the second back beat comes in that beat is sooooooo phat ( around 0:57ish). i've got my eyes on you cause i just might need your orchestral hip hop expertise in the future...

that bari/tenor/whatever sax is so greedy and when the rap comes in towards the end i was like "aaaaw yeeeeeeeeeah boi, that's my jam." clean production as expected from you.

king tiger :lmao ha ha ha ha haaaaaaa!!!! dude, i'm slapping the crap out of my knee over here.... hilarious man. "my wife doesn't want to hear me rapping." very classy, i like the effect you have on the vocals in the chorus, but the clarity of the words are a bit muddied or lost with the saturation of the effect. either way i dig it man. nice positive lyrics, though it's not the my cup of tea in regards to rapping material and flow, but the idea and source blending was executed good!

    peace

  5. aw man, aight black panther and sir nuts *in an annoying sonic voice* "maybe next time."

i should definitely be back by the first of june, but i'd be hella surprised if people actually dig my track enough to pass on to the next round. :nicework:

listening to everybody's stuff as we speak, niiiiiiiiice. so many sick arrangements, i like it.

  6. ok boss i'm going to try to be online for the next few hours. i just got word that i'll be heading home to haiti for the next few days (prolly around 9+) so i'll prolly have to get all my voting and minireviews done now since i'll most likely be in the country-side with the fam the whole time.

do i need to resend a better download link or is the problem for my track fixed now?

did black panther and the other folks make it in time?

regardless, best of luck to everybody.

  7. No there is no minimum time limit. I mean I'd shoot for at least 2:00 so you have something substantial, but you could go as long or as short as you'd like!
I don't think so. But the lizards were all mentioning their songs were short. I guess it's a bit showing off or something.

    cool, sounds good.

That moment when you start dancing in your chair while making music: priceless.

that moment when you start making music while dancing in your chair.

  8. k, signed in just to help you out a bit syllix (and anyone who needs arranging tips). i still haven't even started because irl stuff, but i know precisely what i'm going to do because i've thought about it long enough and i feel like our sources work incredibly well together.

production isn't my niche, but i can rearrange ideas somewhat decently once i pick up a few cues from the original source(s).

not to give away what approach i'm going to take, usually i go through this kind of mental checklist:

melody: does the melody sound lyrical, as in would it work to twist it up with vocals? does the phrasing sound like it would be delicious on a particular instrument? (for example, imo many megaman melodies naturally sound like they were designed for guitars)

rhythm: is there any implied rhythm pattern that i could work with? the thing that immediately stood out for me with our mixes (and i'm pretty sure you posted about this earlier) is that they both have an underlying latin groove (yours specifically with the conga stuff, and mine with the bass line groove). it really doesn't matter, but if you can hear hints of a specific genre it's good to use that as a starting point. (ex., again megaman tracks often give an obvious genre nod with their rhythms)

chord progressions: dude... if you're not a theory buff who can instantly recognize when a few chord patterns go together i recommend transposing the songs and time stretching them to the same key/tempo so you can analyze the parts where it sounds like the chords from source A would lead nicely into source B (dunno, i did this a lot when i was growing up and it helped me at the time). again, not giving away too many hints as to what i'm going to do, but you'll be surprised just how similar our tracks are (and besides, you'll realize that a TON of sonic songs utilize the same chord progression patterns and stuff. 8-) )

i hope it helps you finalize your ideas! peace

  9. pffft whatever I don't need a secret weapon. I do wish I had dance / electro music making skillz cuz that high-energy shit seems to do well in things like this

i know that feel bro.... or are you just trying to trick me into thinking that you're not good at electro so you can throw everybody off guard and then proceed to musically obliterate me? <_<

regardless, good luck to you homie. i look forward to hearing everybody's sonic goodness.

  10. Everybody has no-longer-secret weapons now! hahaha, and yeah that tagging system that Akumajo did is just fine so, "Remixer Name feat. Secret Weapon" is good! Thanks for checking!

lol this isn't a race guys. You can actually use the whole week ya know ;-)

    ok, thanks.

no but for real, mine is pretty much secretively secreting secretary secrets. they don't hand out secret weapons like this to just anybody.

  11. EDIT: http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR02258/ this artist's soundcloud has amazing solo keyboard stuff (in my opinion).

start listening to Doc Nano religiously. or somewhat.

from the top of my head these people have slick, high-class piano-only remixes on a project, posted, or at least hosted somewhere on the web (ex., youtube, soundcloud, etc.):

    -rexy

    -schnabubula

    -emunator

pretty sure there's much more, those are just some that come to mind quickly.

  12. question, superiorx: like everybody else, i'm also using a secret weapon/bonus remixer so do i just use the tagging system similar to what akumadigi did? Sir Jordanius feat. *secret weapon* - *fancy title* (Sunset Park & Launch Base)?

Done? I haven't even begun tracking yet... ARGH!! A sonic remix compo awaits, yet here I am calling my friends trying to get them to read from the AEON Flux script for my assignment this week... No worries.. I am confident I can finish a weeks work today and have the rest of the time to work on the compo :)

if it makes you feel any better, i'm working extra hours this week so i probably won't get started either until much later this week also.

    oh yeah, and

You gotta hear what I did because it's the dumbest fucking thing I've ever done, music-wise.

I knew what key to record the song in for the sax -- G.

Then I put the sax away, and started writing the song... but I wrote and recorded it in Bb.

So then I had to transpose the entire session down -3.

Now that I've recorded the sax I think I'll just transpose the song back to normal and the sax +3. Because. Damn. I don't want to re-record the entire song. x_x

you do know that you're not supposed to play it with your penisecret weapon, right?

  13. no, don't do raid unless you're talking about four or five drives. waste of money otherwise when a simple backup program like cobian can do it easy.

think easy for now and upgrade later. just pick one or two drives and roll with it.

i cover the basics of raid in my guide in my sig, but let's put it this way - in all my builds, i've done raid arrays twice. one was a twenty-drive array with five backups, and one was a ten with five backups. there's almost always a better solution for small-time stuff.

yeah, i'm not a computer noob but i definitely have no idea what you're all talking about  i'll totally be checking out your sig links to be more informed for my future endeavors.

thanks again so much for the suggestions everybody. as of now i've unfortunately lost about 120 GB of files, but the new drive is 3TB so that give me room to make up for it. ;-)

    peace

    jordan

  14. thanks again everyone for the feedback. i'm not patient enough to order online so i picked up the WD caviar and an enclosure at my local electronics store. oddly, they didn't have anything other than Toshiba, WD, Seagate, and i think Sony. no LaCie, though.

You're going to get a certain unreliable stories about every single hard drive company. I used to use a few Lacie drives but I've had fairly early failure rates on a few and not just the drives but the enclosure too.

Right now I have one of these Seagate Goflex drives that I use for backup purposes and it's been one of the more reliable external drives that I've had.

i know, but i wanted to at least get a general consensus on a few trusted brands. if seagate keeps you rolling that's awesome, but i'm going to keep my distance for quite some time.

This is true. The only drive failure I've had was a WD, but then I have multiple other WDs that are about 20 years old and still working great. Your best bet is to invest in multiple drives and go RAID or regularly back up one to the other.

    -steve

yeah, i explained my situation to the clerk there and he also suggested RAID. i never heard of that term, his explanation went over my head, and wikipedia's not helping, so you think you can pm me the gist of what "RAID" is in layman's terms?

(you could post it here too if you want, but my issue has been resolved so i didn't want to veer offtopic)

  15. oh, sorry for blowing off your question. i'm still jamming to some of the tracks.

i dunno what darkesword or superiorx will say, but i think it'd be good idea to not change your vote more than thrice for obvious reasons. but i know what you mean, a lot of em were really close. i personally just voted for the tracks that made me bob my head harder or start drooling from having my jaw dropped for so long. :nicework:

  16. what in the?!..... i started listening to the tracks...

GGGGGGOOOOOOOOTTTT DAAAAAAAAAAYYYYUUUUM. you all are some greedy mofos. so many sick nasty grooves.

OOOOOOOHHH SHHHHHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIYYYIIITTTTT.... benjamin mothafuckin briggs fucking murdered the dance floor yo.

sorry for posting incoherently and with capslock rage, but these kids are blowing my mind with these beats, man.

    good job to everyone, yo.

man, i'm glad i've been keeping quiet instead of trash talking. good god, mr. briggs you can father ma babies mane, just throwing it out there.

  17. Never ever use a seagate drive.

In german, there is a joke which goes as follows:

"Seagate oder sie geht nicht", which is a pun on the pronounciation of "sie geht (it works)" and "sie geht nicht (it doesn't work)".

I normally recommend Western Digital external drives, especially the 3,5" ones are great. I still have one running which is nearly 9 years old.

:lmassoff:oh man, now i'm totally going to remember this anytime i think of seagate.

yeah, i also had an extremely trustworthy WD external for a Mac a while back but i donated it to a relative who needed it more (at the time), and to my knowledge it's still kicking.

thanks so much for all the suggestions, i think i'm 98% sold on the enclosure idea. SymbiotiX, do you by any chance know where I could find that information about lacie and WD?

because right now i'm focused on these three:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822154349

    http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?id=10517

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136284

but if it's true that lacie utilizes some WD components, then i'm going to go ahead with WD.
