I'm not familiar with EWIs at all, but that square-ish tone is really neat.

There's an important distinction to make here. I think the negativity you're describing is intended not for the cover itself, but for the claim that the cover is an original arrangement (when it is actually just a literal transcription for X instrument). You are not making this claim. Smooth, however, is: hence the trickle-down resentment for the guy who paints the biggest target. If you are meeting that criticism in the OCR forums, I would guess that it's because songs posted here are often perceived to be candidates for submission, even if you're just sharing a cover like this.

It may seem like I'm arguing semantics, but I think there's a lot of bad vibes that are maybe misguided or aren't being expressed properly. Keep your head up!

Cheers mate! And I think you're right, especially within these forums. I'm not claiming to be making attempts for submission here - that's just a bit of a world away from what I'm trying to do with these covers, as much as I appreciate the tremendous artistry that OCR is home to!

However, from some of the other artists I know doing similar work to myself, I've heard a range of criticisms about Smooth's work outside his arrangements. A frequent one that comes up is that he sounds 'over-processed', which doesn't really seem like a valid complaint to me. Another is that he's got a very limited tonal palette, which I can kind of understand - many articulated parts tend to use the syllable 'buh' - but looking across all his covers, it straight up isn't true. And it kind of seems like criticising a pianist for only making piano covers...

But anyway, thanks for the elaboration and encouragement!

Hey man, this is awesome!  Sounds really nice :)  It's nice to see someone who actually knows how to handle an EWI--I know a lot of wind players who just kind of, uh, have them.  And that's it.

I do youtube stuff like this too, so let me know if you wanna collab sometime!  Here's an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7206KnnMYvI

Edit: wait a minute did you just friend me on Facebook lol

Full disclosure, I was tired, thought I was looking at one of your posts and instinctively hit 'add friend' thinking it was 'like page' - but I'm sure our circles would have crossed there sooner or later!

I've had that Another Medium cover sitting in my Watch Later list, so I'm sorry it's taken me a little time to get around to listening to it - absolutely sensational. I've been subbed to you for some time and the quality of your playing has always blown me away. I would be thrilled (and a little starstruck) to collab with you some time - please don't hesitate to ask if you ever need an EWI player or clarinettist. I'm always on the lookout for people who can deliver percussion parts for future tracks, so I'll definitely keep you in the loop for that sort of thing if you're keen!

Thanks again for the kind words, they mean a lot coming from a player of your stature!

I love the lo-fi approach with the ewi!

Thanks heaps! I really love just treating it like any other instrument for arrangements :)

:D Great cover. One of my favourite pieces and you keep it all bubbly. :3

Thanks so much! Mine too! Keeping those triplets clean was tricky!

What brand of EWI is that, if you don't mind me asking?

I'm sorry I'm only reading this now, I responded on the other thread you commented on! EWI 4000s by Akai :)

Apologies to everyone for not responding punctually, I wasn't notified of replies to this thread!

Yeah, man, I hear ya.  There is certainly something to be said for faithfulness to the original.  What brand of EWI is that?  I have been shopping for one.

Thanks man, I always get worried when I read Smooth comparisons because people seem really down on tracks that are faithful reproductions of the original. I like to approach these things like a classical musician - I'm not touching the arrangement, I'm just here to put my own personal spin on it :)

It's an EWI 4000s by Akai. If you're in the market for one, the 5000 has probably superseded it, but it depends what you're after. They're nearly exactly the same in functionality, the 5000 just has some added convenience (battery pack, wireless). Sounds depend on what you want to load on to it, but the default packs are pretty different: I'm using all 4000 default patches in my videos, which are all pretty synthy and 80s-ish, while the 5000 has attempted to include closer analogues of real instruments. Keep me in the loop if you get one and lay down some tracks!

  5. SoUnDoLe, I will comment on every site you post on :)!! YouTube is for praise, but here I want to be more aggressive! I've said it in the past, but I'll say it again! Let's hear that EWI in a remix. These have been great covers with my new favorite instrument, the EWI ( I even love saying it) but now is the time to Submit....please    You've got the talent. You've got the networking. You've got ideas...I want to hear you with a more personalized use of that miracle machine! Now over to YouTube for my enthusing....

Thanks so much for all your kind praise! It's something I wouldn't mind doing, for sure, but I'm usually happier handling arrangement duties off to someone more in the know than myself - I've loved the work I've done in other people's mixes! That being said, there's some subtle stuff I've added here too - when Julia enters there's an additional pedal bass part that isn't in the original. Baby steps? :)

Whoah, your covers tend to be pretty good, but the EWI sounds amazing when in the context of a somber/mellow song. If you ever want to do a full remix, I think you should definitely try doing a song like this.

Thanks so much mate! I think a lot of that is Julia's mixing prowess, she automated reverb in a way that I think fits perfectly. If I was submitting to OCRemix I think it would definitely be something like this where I can play with making the effect of a choir of EWIs!

  6. Definitely something that I would put in my Ecco playlist for a listen. ^_^

You give the piece higher highs, with your woodwind, than the game does, I think. A nice touch. :) It's rather pleasant.

Thanks heaps mate! I'll probably end up covering some more from Ecco in early 2016 too (surprisingly, it's depressingly unpopular so I don't want to flood my videos with tracks from it, as much as I'd enjoy covering them!)

  7. eee :D

I'm glad you're posting here or else I never would have found you. Lovely, lovely music. c:

In parts, this reminds me of Ultima pieces for some odd reason.

EDIT - Oh my gosh, you've been here an entire decade longer than I have! Well, then, I'm glad I finally saw your music posts. XD

Thanks heaps! I'm glad you've enjoyed it! I can see the Ultima connection pretty clearly - modal harmony and some similar classical progressions. I'd like to cover more music from the Ultima games but I think there's maybe 3 people online that would actually recognise anything!

And yeah, this account goes way back! I first found OCRemix in high school and have been enjoying the works on here ever since, but it's only very recently that I've started trying to make covers more seriously (last 1-2 years)!

  8. This is a pretty awesome cover. I love the overall mellow feel it has, and everything blends together nicely. It stays pretty true to the original while having a few great personal touches. Well done!

Thanks heaps! Swiggles handled the mixing for this, and while personally I would have liked to play around with balance a bit more, I like the subtle interpretive touches he added, like the percussion. Thanks for listening!
