  1. Cool. Some interesting twists in here that really set this piece aside from a lot of OCRemixes. I must say, you perfectly captured the mood of Perfect in one song. The harder orchestral parts being more the shooting and the earlier parts representing her stealh magic. The transitions are flawless, and the mixing is somewhat creative, with everything being sort of distant, yet with a tight electro drum groove laid over. (I actually thought of Radiohead when I first heard the drums) The harp is, I think, the best aspect of the mix. Coming in at just the right times and adding just the right flavors to the mix. Very nice work, Mr. Baranowsky. I greatly enjoy this piece. :nicework:

  2. As I've said before, I love pieces that work despite being very "empty". Texx sound's "I Love the Airport" and Bazooie's "Theme" from Wizards and Warriors are some of my favorite on the site. So this was a great listen. The feel from this is so unique. It's sort of electro-jazzy grooviness that still gives off an energy. The violin solo might seem out of place, but it really gives the piece a sweet bridge. The only thing I find a bit...odd...is the snapping. It's so out front. It kinda cuts through and then the lack of reverb makes it awkward. But other than minute little detail, this song's fantastic. Definitely going on my next mix CD. Oh, and po!, I missed you. Make more songs, please. ^_^

  3. Well, I like it. There's a strange vibe going that's not found in a lot of songs, but you managed to pull it off, in my opinion. Specifically, I like any section identical to 0:30-0:50. The way the lead switches from the guitar to the...erm...background stuff...is really awesome. Then there's the section 2:01-2:30. The organ just rocks my face. It's such a great little moment in the song. Top notch work, Sr. Shadow. :nicework:

  4. I am impressed. Fantastic transitions, incredible playing, clever arrangement, and all this without a sequencer. Alas, as is the curse of being a drummer on OCR, the drums in this song make me wince when they come in. Occasionally I can't help but notice the total lack of dynamics on them, but the organ solo mostly covers them up. Speaking of which, that has to be one of the most bitchin' rock organ solos I've ever heard. Granted, I mostly hear Hammond organ solos, but the power of a B3 is not to be underestimated. It should also be said that your trumpet work is fantastic as well. The way the two play back and forth is just awesome. All around quality work, John. So far, you haven't let me down. I'm looking forward to your next work. :nicework:

  5. Oh man, I love that organ! Now that that's out of the way, I just wanna say I really liked this piece. Everything about it is just so polished, so well-arranged. And the instrument choice is filled with variety and yet still works. I mean, is that a harpsichord in there? One thing that I found strange, not necessarily wrong, was the drums. Why the muffledness and low-quality sound? It adds something, sure, but I think cleaner drums just would've worked better. Then again, I'm not the Wingless, so I got nothin'. Just a sweet mix, man. Keep it up. :nicework:

  6. It's funny how I take so few trips into the WIP forum, but almost everytime I do, I find a mix that eventually ends up on the site. Anyway, I loved this back when it was a WIP, and I'm glad to see it up. It's such a great little piece, with all the transitions and expansion of the source material. I still don't know why anyone would look at that tiny snippet (that eventually became annoying) at the end of battles and think "I could remix that" but aluminum pulled it off. With flying colors I might add. :nicework:

  7. Well, funny enough, as was the case with another orchestral/trance mix there are mixed feelings, more than likely arising from the duality of the song. As with *takes a deep breath* "CidsendsadreamtotheOceanPalace" I think both parts, while not done immaculately in their respective genres, come together to form one hell of a good song. I thought the "muffledness" befit the total theme of the song, which came across to me as this sort of dream-like energetic moment arising from the straighter orchestral sad song. Also, this is supposed to be a sad song, so I thought the lack of loud piercing saw synths was rather appropriate. (Sure there are saw synths, but they aren't loud and piercing is what I'm saying) The rain samples...well, yeah, they're corny. No getting around that one. But somehow, I think the song wouldn't be as good if they were taken away. The piano does hit some weird notes, but I don't know if I'd call them "wrong", and they aren't glaring either way. When I first heard this song back in IMC I loved it right away. An overall great tune that pulls off melding two different genres very well.

  8. SuperGreenX, you may have had 2 mixes on the front page, but GrayLightning here has you beat. He was on the front page with his FFVii mix, then seven days later, had his Secret of Mana collab posted. So this is his second time with two mixes on the front. I'm sorry SGX, but this time, you are not the winnar.

Anyway, I liked this mix cosidering its technological handicaps. I'm sure if you could produce a song with Flaming Lips quality textures you would, but seeing as how that's not really possible, this is really damn good. This perfectly captures the image of flying through space on the way to some important event. The repetitive bell noise is like the stars flying by over and over and over, and the breath noise that comes every now and again is like a large planet. The constant bassline and drums are like the engine and the strings give a sense of importance. The bass adds a sort of uncertainty to the mix, as well. So basically, GL has crafted a mix that was exactly what he wanted it to be, and for that, I think this deserves a :nicework:.

  9. I was glad when this won IMC:LE and I'm glad to see it posted. It's well polished, excellently mixed and mastered, and is very well arranged. I'm surprised noone's commented on the somewhat unusual choice of having that low choir in there, at IMC people criticized you for it. The congas are my favorite part, no doubt. And I have to say, you snuck that Rainbow Road theme in there real well. :nicework:

  10. If I was a woman, I'd want Jason Merrill to be the father of my kids. I mean, this is very, very impressive. The singing is much better than in Tororian Love Song, with the exception of those almost painful harmonies at the very end, and the playing is spot-on as well. The drums sound fake as hell, but eh, whatcha gonna do. For being fake, they sound pretty good on the whole. Not many complaints comin' from me, I have to say. Keep the sweetness comin Jason!

    :nicework:

  11. Aggh the cheeese!!! Well, since it's intentional I won't take any points off for it. This is just superbly arranged. I mean, I wouldn't have thought it possible to pull off a Castlevania lounge music medley at all, but voila! Not only is this one, but it's also very fun to listen to. The drumwork, despite sample quality, is excellent, and the transitions are fantastic. Just all around nice work, Mr. baranowsky. And that's why you get this: :nicework:

  12. Sweet.

I remember hearing the original everyone fussed over, and being very un-blown away. This, however, made for a very, very interesting listen. I find myself able to get into it a lot. And with that sweet bassline and those amazing choral sweeps, it's both groovy and ethereal at the same time. The percussion was very well done, a lot better than people usually put in these kinds of mixes, and the arrangement keeps me wanting to hear what's going to happen next. It's a somewhat unconventional song in that respect.

There was, however, one problem I had with this piece that ruined it entirely for me. Those chimes sound like they're in the wrong key, and there's some wrong notes all throughout the whole piece.

    Just kidding.

    Nice Work. :nicework:

  13. Aahh, I love a mix so balanced. Everything is mastered very well, and the overall feeling comes across very well. I especially love the tiny little effect used at 0:10. Stuff like that makes a good mix better. I don't know what everyone is on about this sounding like "SafetyinNumbers" because honestly, they couldn't be much more different. This song isn't trance, SafetyinNumbers doesn't have a guitar solo, and there's about 75 bpms difference as well. Anyways, I really like this for it's sheer polish, even if it isn't as different from the original as it could be. :nicework:

  14. This is awesome! A very original vibe going here. I especially love the use of sound effects. The only part of this mix I found a bit lackluster was the drumming, the snare in particular. I think it's too low and distant a sound for a song already so low-end centric, and near the end begins to overplay. The bass drum (if there is one) should be louder, and those hi-hat hits just clutter things up. Those are pretty much nitpicks, I suppose, cuz otherwise this mix has groove to spare. The organ rocks my face, and that bassline is outright infectious. It might be a little short, but bands in the 50's and 60's could get away with songs even shorter than this one.

    Nice Work! :nicework:

BTW: What song is this a remix of?

  15. Sweet Christ, this is balls-out good piano. This is very different from other solo piano stuff on this site and very much in a good way. I could probably listen to this a lot more than a lot of the more conservatively arranged solo piano mixes here. The, erm, loungey/bluesy/jazzy playing at the start is really sweet, as I have big respect for people who can play that kind of stuff. The second half is also very impressive, with a strong sense of emotion. That ending is kinda wack though...Why scrape the piano strings? =| Anyways, major kudos from me. I sure as hell hope you make more stuff.

    :nicework:

  16. WHOA! The clipping gets thick here. I don't know how you guys can listen to orchestral with clipping. It hurts my head. Anyway, overall nice track. Vibe-y instrument could've been much less midi-ish, and the articulations could've been more human, but the oboe/cello section DEFINITELY makes up for all the bads. It's simple stuff like this, as Wingless said "the subtleties" that make orchestral good. I just wish the clipping didn't bury the song in the louder parts, or I'd keep this...

    Nice Work either way. :nicework:

  17. Whoa, what an awesome song. And so well-recorded. It's everything you caould ask for in a big band rendition of the Mario 2 song. It's funny cuz I tried to get my band to do a jazz version of this song as well, with a guitar oriented focus. It didn't pan out, so I'll just have to listen to this song until I can maybe pull that project back together...

    Very Nice Work. :nicework:

  18. Whoooa this is some hi-quality orchestral. Especially the percussion. The timpani hits, snare rolls, and cymbal crashes are all well articulated and well-placed. The samples as a whole could be better, but I find the arrangement is so well done, it overcomes it well. I think the oboe section is the best part, because I love oboes. But of course the whole mix is good, even if I wouldn't give it a highly reccomended. But maybe I just don't know enough about orchestral to really know what pushes something over the bar. I noticed during transitions, there's often a really long high note that is kind of annoying, but other than that, all good things outta this mix.

    :nicework:

  19. Heh, this is somethin I certainly wasn't expecting. A porn groove from Pilowings 64, who'd've thought? Anyway, this is some all-around good stuff, I have to say. I love a good organ sound, and this mix delivers. E.P.'s are cool too, and those drums play their role in this style very well, layin in a big fat groove. I absolutely love 1:57-2:00, it just makes me smile. The clipping at the solo makes me really cringe, though. it's the one problem I have with this mix, but thankfully it doesn't last long. It's great to see variety on OCR.

    :nicework:

  20. I picked this track up months ago and instantly fell in love with it. I listened to it constantly, and burned it onto a CD I played all the time. It fell out of my rotation though when I got sick of the CD and my computer crashed. But now, listening to it again, I've yet again got a raging Coke-bottle sized erection from the sheer awesomeness of this song. There is nothing unsatisfactory about it. I wouldn'y go as far as some of you crazies in saying it's one of my favorite songs ever because that's simply not true. (and in fact, I find it frightening some of you think that) However, I love this track to no end, and plan very much on keeping it on my Winanmp playlist for a long time.

  21. In the highly quotable words of one Keanu Reeves:

    "Whoa."

I seriously cannot believe this is sequenced. But enough about that. Composition wise, I have always been a fan of this song, and found this particular take to bring out the great driving force of the melody and how it can work slowly with stuff stuck in the middle. A lot of songs like this end up sounding like mish-mash "Lookat me I can play der piano! Hur hur hur!" but this one holds your attention. Unfortunately, that ending really doesn't seem too conclusive. I like anyway, though.
