  1. :| Well, I liked the solo... Er, sorry DJP, but these vocals are pushed too far in the back and poorly recorded. I'm not saying I'm any better a singer or anything, but people criticize works of art they could never make themselves all the time. I think it would be a good idea to retry this, record the vocals better or something. The instrumental aspects are very well done, if not a bit muddy. The bass pwnz me, so kudos for that.
  2. Ohhh looks like once again I get to be first reviewing. :D I liked the original and this is an interestng take on it. Very flowing and calm. The samples chosen are just perfect. The piano solo was interesting. Especially some of the delays on the piano, the "stutters" if you will. They made it a little more alive.

Now about these wrong notes (4:45)... It's obvious these are intentional, but the real question is, were they used in the proper context? This is a smooth flowing ambient piece. If this were a speedcore crazy madness track I can understand dissonance like that, but here, it just sounds bad. Like DJP said, it leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth.

Overrall, a very good mix. A chill take on a very good song. And from yet another newcomer. I think a lot of our latest mixes are from new people arent they?

  3. Wow. I thought this was actually very good. Its minimalist and slow, but achieves such a level of mood it deserves a lot of praise. It almost pulls you in with its depth. I like how DJP put it, "a journey", cuz that's what this song really is. It isn't trying to blow you away with a wall of sound or anything, it's just a dark, foreboding, sad song. Best part: when the looong note finally drops at 1:32. Definitely a good listen if you don't mind the genre.

Note: I actually am not a fan of ambient stuff because I think its boring and overly simple. This song just, was good though.

  4. unobtrusive basically means it isn't bad enough to ruin the song, but now that I think of it, the guitar work was more like, "amazing". Especially now that you tell me its one take. I know this forum is only for reviews but I had to correct my stance on this song as my review made it sound like I didn't think it was as good as I think it is. AND PLEASE DO A NEW VERSION OF THIS SONG! :D:D

  5. It's so beautiful...I love how it grows from just Jason and his guitar, to a multi-layered rock song. Progression like that makes me feel like the song is going somewhere and I'm going with it. Which is good. And the vocals. Ahh yes, the vocals. They start out fine, but at 5:30 it makes me wanna cry it's so off-key. The lyrics were written nicely I must say, and overrall I can't really complain about the vocals. The musicianship was also very, unobtrusive, for lack of a better word. This pretty much is mediocre if you compared it to other songs of this genre, but the fact that it's based off a VG song makes it good. A good listen, and something new to add to your collection. (cuz I know you have one)
  6. Note to self: Never listen to MongooseDog becuz he is an idiot. I can't figure out what drove mazedude to exclude bass from this song. It would make it just that much better. What is here though, is a very energetic listen. I loved almost every second of it. AmIEvil never ceases to amaze. Well, sometimes he does, but he never lets me down. :P

  7. I absolutley would love this mix to death if the drums didn't sound soooooo fake. Actually, it isn't all the drums. It's pretty much just the snare. It's too poppy. Now I know what you're thinking "What a nit-picker" but you have to remember, that sound is repeated every 2 and 4 throughout the whole song. And even more than that at some points. The arrangement is spot on sounding like a Dream Theater type deal. Except the lead singer isn't a woman like the Dream Theater guy. :D The "falling down" sound that occurs as they say Punch-Out is just awesome. Hell, this whole song kicks three and a half pounds of ass. Definitely an OCR classic.

  8. About the drumming: It seems a lot of the new jazz players play in this fashion. Just check out The Bad Plus or Fieldwork. Awesome drumming abound my friends (and in the case of Bad Plus, very very good music as well).

As for the mix itself. Awesome stuff. I could listen to stuff like this all day. I love how the organ is circling around my head and fading in and out like that. It's a creepy touch. Very very well arranged and executed.

Oh, and DJP put "kudos" at the end of his review. Is that higher than "Highly Recommended" or lower than "Recommended"? Or is it just something he felt like putting at the end of his post?

  9. Aww man. As soon as I start gettin into this it's over. Oh well, what's there sounds fantastic. The bass doesn't seem to fit, but the fact that a guiro makes an apearance makes up for it. Organ solo is the best part. It seems like at some points there could have been more you know? Call me crazy, but someitmes it just feels... empty. I think you did a good job with the guitar and trying to make it sound like a surf song (typical surf whammy bar-ism at :43). Good job overrall.

  10. While this a grooving little piece, it lacks polish. The off-key main synth, which seems like it's only off-key when it hits that first note, just kills it for me. I mean, it's like *BOOP* *boodeboodeboo etc.* and that first boop just makes me wince. How hard is it to get it right? Anyway, volume levels are also a little wonky, as the drums eat everything else (yes I know it's hip-hop but let's be reasonable) and you can barely hear the synth that comes in at 1:22. If the main synth wasn't so off I would just be nit-picking and could love this piece. As is though, it makes me cry.

  11. F***in awesome. This beats out some of the stuff other, more experienced remixers put out. Funny thing people say that OCR's judging system "locks out" new people because of the high standards. But then songs like this come out and show you new people are still making it into OCR. Very very good mix. Hope to see more from Gustav.

  12. Oh man, there you have it folks. It looks like there IS someone on this planet who doesn't like this song. The condolences of all OCR members are with you, sad fellow.

I personally love this song to the core of my soul. It's so clever it burns. Well, not really, but it is one of the most creative things on this site. Taking a nine second song and making it last as long as it does without being boring. It's what OCR is all about.

  13. I downloaded this song a long time ago, and loved it like nothing else. Only now did I realize I never wrote a review...

I loved this song back on the NES and was thrilled somene remixed it. All of it's quite good. The piano, strings, etc. The only problem I have is the drums. There's this one repeating pattern. It's a typical rock shuffle (sped up an assload of course) and the hi-hat plays an "open-close-open-close" thing in between the snare hits. It seems to cut through the rest of the song, and I can't notice anything but it. It, for lack of a better word, annoys me. I used to be able to listen to this remix in joy, until I heard that pattern. Over and over and over. Then I wanted to shoot myself for having ruined one of my favorite songs on OCR. Ballz out.

In case you feel like ruining the song like I did, the pattern sounds like this: seedileedily pop, seedileedily pop, seedileedily pop (say it fast and listen to the song. You'll see what I mean.)

  14. !ME GUSTA BAILAR!! Tu madre es gorda y tu padre es tonto. !El perro y el gato tiene hambre! Mi queso no es su queso, y las maracas son muy caliente. !Yo tengo tu familia! Tu hermana es muy bonita...

I loved this remix to no end. I always thought Kefka's theme had a latin flavor to it, and indeed I was not the only one, as we now have TWO Latin Kefka remixes at this site. I've heard some people call this beat "salsa" and "mambo" but really it's more of a soca (read:soul calypso) beat. At least, the snare is playing a total soca rythym. I found the brass hits got on my nerves a lot, but other than that, I really liked this song. Great jorb Noppz!

    !La pelicula es picante!
