  1. If you want a non-compromising piano library, then you need to get Synthology's Ivory Grand Piano, it's about 10gb in size and absolutely authentic. If you don't have the 10gb of space to dedicate to one library, get Steinberg's The Grand 2, it's the one I use and it sounds fantastic.

EDIT - No, sorry, Ivory is closer to about 30 or 40gb. 10DVDs...

  2. Do Sonar 7 or FL have anything like Cubase's Logical Editor? You can program "functions" for MIDI use within the program, you can mess with ANY aspect of the MIDI notes, velocity, length, quantization, pitch, etc. I use it to program random velocity functions and other awesome stuff (nothing beats clicking on the entire midi track, choosing the random velocity function in whatever range I want, let's say... 64-110, and BOOM, nice velocities, all random!^____^)

I have a few extra machines here, and I want to turn one of them into a portable DAW, not sure if I should install Cubase again or try Sonar.

  3. You sir fail. Theres a reason why Malmsteen isn't as popular as other "guitar gods". Sure he has feeling and emotion in his music. But when the majority of people are saying "his songs sound alike", "all he does is shred", or "he uses the same scale to much" are all of those people wrong when only a few people say otherwise?

And of course, music is completely based on opinions and likes. But theres a reason why people like Petrucci, Vai, Gilbert etc. other than Malmsteen. Why do you think that is?

The way I see it is theres always 2 parts to music. Your skill as a musician,(your appeal to people, your ability to be different, your knowledge in music theory, etc.)and your skill at what ever musical tools you use.

Malmsteen is an excellent guitar player, no doubt. But his musicianship is not so good. I don't see how you can disagree when in his own videos he explains his favorite scale runs that he even says he uses quite often. And obviously he uses the same scale often which(if you know anything about music)also means he is using the same chords. He may be arranging the progressions differently, but its still the same chords which make his songs sound the same. His shred style was innovated, but the same thing over and over and over for 20 years shows his inability to come up with something new.

But if you listen to Dream Theaters cds its obvious that he is constantly trying new rhythm and solo ideas.

I'm not trying to turn this into a Petrucci vs Malmsteen fight, so I will also say that there are plenty of other plays who are always trying to be different and innovated while still keeping their style intact.

Lastly, when pretty much everyone in this thread disagrees with you, what makes you think your individual thinking is right over all of these other peoples?

Edit: And as for you playing, it is sloppy, and it's nothing that hasn't been done before. You pretty much sound like a Malmsteen copy, which I'm pretty sure is what your after.

    ..you're...

  4. what are you looking for in terms of vocals?

Someone who won't bleed to death while singing. SICK BURN!

Also, about this song, it's got some promise, but the thing that's keeping you back is your counterproductive drums. Seriously, the drums sound like a cat throwing up. You need to mix the bass drum higher, add a compressor and boost the EQ in the 50-90hz range. The sequencing is REALLY bad, completely repetitive and boring.

As for the rest of the song, it's really not bad, the performance and arrangement are both good, but you're really killing your song with the bad mixing job. I really can't give you any details there without actually having the tracks to play around with, but this song lacks the big fat sound that it should have, and also the big punchy sound of a metal drumkit.

Some googling should help you figure out what exactly you should do. Also, do A->B comparisons with professional music of the same genre (whatever you regularly listen to that inspired you to do this track), the closer you can mix it to sound like that, the better it'll be!

  5. You must be part of the population that cleans their ears and eyes by cramming them full of shit.

The point is that all DAWs do NOT handle audio the same. Every DAW has its own engine for handling audio, some really ARE better than others. And no, I did not and will not read the link, those kinds of things are idiotic.

If you want to check up on it, I urge you to do so. Go locate some technical documents from Cakewalk, Steinberg and whoever makes FL studio. They will all handle audio differently. Eat a dick etc etc.

  6. Hey hey, take a chill pill, people. First off, the actual AUDIO you hear can differ from program to program. Sure, when working with a soundblaster, FL will sound like ProTools, but ProTools is made to work with very VERY high end hardware audio interfaces and all kinds of things that FL will never be able to use. So yes, you WILL hear a difference between FL and ProTools, if ProTools is being used in its optimal environment. If you're using an Audiophile 24/96 with FL and ProTools M-Powered, you will not hear an audible difference in the quality.

Always keep in mind that (generally) the more high end the DAW is, the better it will handle audio.
