  1. I've still got a bit of money left from my birthday, so I'm thinking of getting at least one good accessory for it. I'm leaning towards a remote, although if I start doing more inside work, I might go for a better flash. What does everyone else recommend? Its my first SLR :P

u gotta get a FLASH! i find that a flash is probably the most important thing you could carry around.. it's also not just for indoors.. it's essential outdoors too. check out Strobist if you wanna see what you can do with flash.. see Lighting 101

  2. *Sigh*

Some people don't seem to realize that a specific key (ex: D minor) sounds EXACTLY the same as any other key of the respective type (ex: G minor) just that the notes are raised or lowered to the new pitch.

that's not true when talking about acoustic instruments. since they have set tunings, certain notes sound different than others, for example playing the one octave harmonic on the E string of a violin.. you wouldn't be able to get the same sound if it was Eb. piano strings aren't dampened once you go high enough (forgot which note it is), so it will sound different if you transpose stuff

    etc, etc, etc...

  3. stuck on 3:4 now. the hit detection is startin to bother me... i have my lasers all up in that red bar, but it WONT GO UP. i think i've had enough of this.. it would be better if the physics were more concrete and not so loose

  4. There's a lot of subtleties to dnb that don't show up unless you're putting some mind power into listening to it

there's a lot of subtleties to every kind of music, it's not just DnB.

and what's wrong with not putting mind power into listening to music? i've always thought there were 2 sides to listening to music... listening with your heart and listening with your brain. i feel like listening with your heart, just feeling the music, is the most basic and primitive response to music and is always a part of the musical experience. listening with your brain may or may not come into play much, depending on how you listen to music. but i think it's not a requirement of listening to music the "correct" way.. only engaging the heart is

  5. do you have a shoulder rest? you should get one if you don't have one. you should NOT be resting the neck on your left hand. you should be able to hold the violin with just your neck, and your left hand should be free to move anywhere

as for right hand, i'm sure with time you'll get used to it. right hand (both hands actually) should be very relaxed and you shouldn't really have to grip it hard

  6. That REALLY worries me. Any way to fix that?

well heres some articles about correcting posture:

there's a lot more articles on t-nation but i don't remember what they're called. but if you look up author Eric Cressey, he has a lot of posture-oriented articles

but really, the best way is to not spend so much time sitting. humans aren't made to sit all day.. it's best to be constantly changing your posture, from sitting to standing to lying etc. take breaks when sitting for long periods of time, and work on some of the exercises outlined in the articles above. also, it takes a looong time and consistent effort to heal your posture. the damage was done from years and years of sitting all day.. it's gonna take a similar effort to reverse that effect

  7. Sweet. Yea I feel kind of lame not really doing as much as I want but I can take pride in doing stuff on rings that most of the meatheads at the gym can't even do. Also have you gotten that book from gymnasticbodies yet? I heard it was suppose to be coming out around this time... I just haven't heard of anyone getting it yet.

i also got rings from coach sommer.. but i didn't buy the book. i dunno.. it doesn't seem necessary.. i have more than enough things to keep me busy on rings. and there's plenty of stuff on youtube already

  8. One question I have that maybe one of you can answer, is how to work out and lift weights but not like, get huge?

it's all in the DIET. diet is as important (if not more important) than training/exercise. you won't get bigger if you don't actually gain weight.. although you will "look bigger" and have better defined muscles

I seem to have run into a small problem.

Weight seems to keep going down at a nice rate, yet my "gut" is still there. I have noticed a change in my arms and chest, but my ab area is still a mini keg with no change.

Anyone know why this is and/or a solution to fix that?

that's most likely a postural problem. if you sit all day (like in front of a computer like most people), then your posture will deteriorate. your posterior chain (hamstrings, glutes, etc.) will get weaker, your hip flexors will tighten, and your core will also get weaker.

when that happens, your entire spine will slump, leading to forward angled hips and rounded shoulders. and also your weak core will allow your gut to spill out rather than holding it in tight

anyways... my particular goal is to strengthen my core. i've done a fair bit of research into this.. that's where i came to the realization above. after spending too much time sitting and slouching over the years, my core is pathetically weak. i can't do wushu (mostly just the kicks which require a lot of core) like i used to.. and i also probably can barely run a mile (which is NOT an cardio/endurance thing.. it's muscular conditioning since i can cycle decently)

and a great resource for more hardcore people who are into the exercise physiology side of things, a great website with tons of articles is T-nation

  9. nothing inspired me to get into music.. i was always a musician from the beginning (started playing piano when i was 4). as for getting into arranging vg music.. all the classic NES/SNES music i loved caused me to start arranging/transcribing when i was about 11 or so. SMB3, Ninja Gaiden, Super Mario Kart, Super Adventure Island.. all that good stuff

  10. this isn't really a direct answer to your question, but this sort of thing would probably be easier as a web app.. like something in PHP or javascript or somethin. you could just have a text file as a "database" and parse it as a space delimited text array, and the browser would take care of displaying the characters
