  1. If I had to classify it under a genre I would say it's Trip Hop

Oh hi. You said the magic words.

Let's see...digging the jazzy rearrangement of the notes of the main melody. When the clip ended I was expecting a huge string swell and Beth Gibbons (or maybe Jill Goldin? :P) to kick in with some smoky vocals. In short - I was grooving with this. Good stuff. Let's hear where you take it next.

(Only thing that threw me is the rimshot sound in the percussion, that tapping that's out of sync with the beat. What's up with that?)

  2. But, overall idea? Okay? Bad?

    Awesome!

Just curious, why so much reverb? It makes the piece sound bigger/more epic, but also more distant and blurry. If you're using it to fill up space, a string or brass pad could do just as well. It's a personal taste thing, but I'm thinking of GrayLightning here...he likes his reverb too, in ethnic soundscape stuff like this, but uses it more subtly and lets the delicacy of the interplay of instruments stand out more. I'd love to hear more of that in this.

This is an excellent start, eagerly awaiting more. :D

  3. Hmm, interesting...while this has some aggressive beats and cool gating-based syncopation going on, it doesn't have a groove per se, and is too spastic to groove to anyway. The source has also been heavily reworked, so much so that I didn't recognize it except for brief phrases.

This is certainly something different for OCR, and quite enjoyable as a soundscape - it sounds like something for an action/chase scene in a sci-fi film with tons of POV cuts. The film soundtrack quality persists in the way that there is no clear-cut climax or breakdown, but lots of moderate rises and falls in the relentless tension of the piece. My only real criticism is that, since it's obviously meant to be a soundscape, there should be more clarity in the mix - there's so much distortion and saturation going on at points that the mix becomes a wash of noise, which works as an occasional effect, but shouldn't constantly blur the underlying textures of the piece. Then again, maybe this was a stylistic choice on sephfire's part - maybe it's meant to be a gurgling, droning post-apocalyptic soundscape, with bursts of chiseled melody periodically breaking through the noise. Or something.

All in all, good, unorthodox stuff.

  4. Oh hello. How did I miss this? Not usually a fan of vocal remixes but this one has great potential. (The "child friendly" line was classic. :P)

Sounds like there's a lot of production work still needing to be done...need to sharpen the EQing and bring up the levels of some stuff, esp. lead guitar. With hard rock like this I'm expecting a lot more punch and compression. You might want to talk to the other guys around here that do guitar rock for more info.

Love the arrangement and concept, and this WIP is pretty damn enjoyable even in its rough form. Really hope you keep working on this, would be a shame to not see it through. ;)

One minor thing - when you redo the vocals, I suggest you change the word "anyways" to "anyway" - it'll still rhyme with "days." "Anyways" is considered incorrect, though many people use it informally, and in the context of a song with otherwise standard English, it sticks out and sounds wrong.

Yeah, great foundation, please keep working on it.

  5. Just wanted to check in...I missed the deadline but am working on the Secret of Mana track. (Sure picked a very intimidating song there. >< Always loved it but never realized how complex it was till I looked at the score.) If someone else comes along who really wants it, go ahead and take it, but I'll have a WIP to you guys as soon as possible. It's going in an acid/dance direction, just fyi.

I can also help with any visual art/web design the project still needs. I'm doing the album art and possibly more for the Super Mario 64 remix project and can show ya samples if you like.

  6. Ciao, Gaggo. :D

    0:00 - 1:33 - It's okay, but almost identical to the original.

1:34 - 2:48 - Buono! Nice interpretation of the original. I would cut most of 0:00-1:33 and just go from here.

I also agree with :blank, the clicky bass doesn't really fit with the song.

    Keep working on it!

  7. I love the crazy-mélange-of-genres-in-one style, a la Star Salzman. You have some really neat ideas in here. I don't think you should toss out any of the style changes, they're quite entertaining, but they could use smoother transitions. (The change around 2:30 is great!) The intro was too quiet and a little long imo, though...didn't quite seem to fit the zany energy of the rest of the song.

For now I think you should work on beefing up supporting instrumentation, and more interpretation of the source...it's really not till the end that you start seriously re-interpreting it, apart from the general song style changes. There's also some timing issues with the keys from around 2:40ish to 3:15ish. The end is going in a great direction though, bring some of that interp to earlier sections of the mix!

Keep working on this, it has a lot of potential. :D

  8. I think the way it was mastered is holding it back a lot - the frequency balance and mixing feels off to me, but more imporantly, the stereo image seems weirdly distorted. One way or another, I feel like this could really, really benefit from some more effort to nail that smartly-produced, pumping bright DDR sound - then it would truly be a fantastic track (I find the ending, for example, especially ingenious).

Agreed, and I love the track despite this. I'm just pretending it's coming through my crappy TV speakers. But yeah, something seems a little strange. There's a grating telephonic quality to it which maybe comes from oversaturation/muddiness in the mids?

I'd also love to hear a remaster if possible!

  9. Coop - it's adware. You may want to remove the live links from your posts, the sites may be dangerous to visit with an insecure browser.

Uninstalling Firefox won't do it, these are installed elsewhere on your system. Until you find them, you can at least block the sites in question from your HOSTS file (<- link) - this will prevent them from loading.

Next, to prevent any further intrusion, I strongly suggest you install the Firefox extensions NoScript and AdBlock. NoScript will disallow any scripting language except for sites you explicitly approve - unknowingly allowing a bad site to run and possibly exploit scripts is how you got the adware in the first place. AdBlock does what its name says, and can block Flash ads and other useless junk.

To find out what got into your system, hit ctrl-alt-del, go to Processes, and Google the name of anything that looks suspicious - there are lots of sites that will tell you if any given process is known to be associated with adware/malware/etc., or if it's legit. You may also want to look into a program like Hijack This, which can log everything that's running on your PC so other people can help you analyze it.

If you need any clarification or more suggestions on what to do, lemme know!
