  1. Woo!

Larry, can you tell us what your plan is for the downloadable shows? I still haven't spent the time to get 29.99 done (doing that while I sleep tonight), so 30 is next. Meh.

    I'm always behind.

I also still need 25 if you have it.

  2. I was just watching it. Very jumpy. Sorry about that F-Zero GX song.

Let's see... 10:00, that's like 9:00 for central time, right?

    Yes, it's 9.

    That's 7 pm PST.

I'm SOOO glad that I have to go to a college football game at that time /sarcasm abound.

Larry, let's see if, in your first broadcast, you can beat the referees that the NCAA sends to Stanford on Saturday...I'd say the average is FOUR HOUR GAMES.

Please, all of you, boycott NCAA football.

And the NFL too, make them get rid of that stupid 5 yards backfield no touching rule.

  3. The Blasted Man (Hungry Joe) - Final Fantasy 8 "Kind of Breezy" [VGMix2 #1998] - OCR Feedback

Nate Jasensky's recent OCR submission was turned down, but was a mix that I personally felt was very promising and deserved more attention. This one's an energetic take on God knows what theme. ;-) If you're down with a guitar based remix with some rock undertones, then you should sign yourself up for a listen to this progressive offering. This one carries quite a number of style changes and features tons of development in those respects, almost functioning like a medley piece. With regards to the strengths and weaknesses of the track, I've written so, so much about this mix in detail as an OCR judge and that carried over into my review of "Kind of Breezy" over at VGMix, which you'll wanna check out if you're really wondering what I thought about it in ludicrous amounts of detail. It'll be interesting to see what material Nate can produce in the future with such a noteworthy effort here.

This one is a tier 4 in VGMix, WAAAAY too low for the proficiency it has. Sure, the samples are less than stellar, and the rock section is haphazardly performed. That said, this is an awesome mix of THE OVERWORLD THEME fom FF8. It's really good, go check it out, and criticize VGMix for placing him so low. This is a tier 2 mix, IMO.

Sir Nuts - Descent 1 "Ascencion (Upside Down)" [The People's Remix Competition 21] - Feedback

OOOOOH, this is awesome right here. My man, Mike Molina, is back again with some good melodic techno work via reelmojo's People's Remix Competition. Taking on TO's source tune choice from Descent for PRC21, Mr. Nuts has got the dial turned up with his familiar brand o' work. I definitely wasn't feeling the piano coming in at 2:51, as the off-key melody killed the flow and deflated a LOT of energy here. [frowny face] That's gonna need to be looked at, but the bigger picture illustrates that this is some solid stuff. Hopefully we can get some tweaks done and see more of this mix in the future, if you know what I mean. Check out the brand new PRC website launched this week, which featured EVERY song ever made from The People's Remix Competition. Straightforward but swanky, head on over to http://www.peoplesremix.com and get the goods!

I was the only one to vote S|r Nuts 2nd place in this comp. However, it was a tough decision. Hopefully Nuts is gonna send this in, cause it's got everything it needs to be a good OCR. Driving, constant tempo in a dancehouse theme makes this piece. Oddly enough, that's also the reason why I didn't vote for it for first place. Regardless, S|r Nuts has more technique than most, if not all amateur mixers out there, with his now trademark "fade-out-fade-in" magic!

Unknown & zircon - Chrono Trigger "When All Hope Has Faded" [VGMix2 #2014] - OCR Feedback

Two of SoundTempest's heavy hitters have joined forces in this very energetic yet melancholy techno/orchestral piece that (much like "Calamitous Judgment") includes several influences, including the noticeable style of one of Jared Hudson's favorite composers, Danny Elfman. Here, my bros Ty & Andy have pulled out a lot of different tricks, starting out this mix in Unknown's style with a very nice music box with some hot female choir vox action before throwing zirc's electronic stylings into the loop with a technosynth iteration of the melody from "The Day the World Revived". The tandem does a great job trading off sounds and measures throughout the mix, definitely providing a product that wouldn't be possible from either one individually. Excellent work that any CT music fan is gonna mess their pants over via this powerhouse teamup of one of OCR's orchestral mainstays in Unknown and the site's latest "OMG, who IS that?" in zircon.

This is like...SCORE. What a team! Really liking the instrumentation to start, and the fact there are really two movements to the piece adds serious depth. The first part is epic orchestral, beautifully done. The second basically copies the style of Metal Gear Solid music to enter, then jumps into techno/trance style. I really like it, VGMix really likes it, Larry of the Oji really likes it, so expect this to be OCR soon.

BTW Larry, I noticed the Danny Elfman in there on my first few listens as well. /thumbs up.

The Wingless & Vigilante - Metroid 1 "Final Exam" [http://www.thewingless.com]

Jesse has been a big fan of The Wingless ever since John released his MM2 classic "Teardrinker", so, even though it took a year to finish (A YEAR!), they've finally gotten everything done with the official release of "Final Exam" over at what many call the greatest website ever, TheWingless.com. Just listening to this, you can really hear how Vigilante's involvement changed the presentation of the mix, as he and Wing put together a much more harder-edged, rock-that-shit-down offering than Wingle's general body of work. Both Jesse and John's characteristics shine through here, and you're a chump if you don't pick it up. Sample this hot stuff dropped by two of OCR's dictator-like judges.

In my mind, there's very little that can match Stemage's Metroid Metal remix of Brinstar, but this one comes DAMN close. Nice intro of Maridia from Metroid 3, confuzzled me a bit but then I understood...just a setup. There's not much here I wouldn't expect from a cover band concert, and it sounds like that's what they were doing. Only with better samples could this be "tehawexomeness" in my book, because the composition and musical prowess is second to none in the community.

    ---

I'll be leaving tomorrow...taking an escapade to Edmonton. Should be fun, seeing as I'm meeting a beautiful woman at the airport and won't be out of her company until I leave to come back home on Tuesday. Night. Late. In the meantime, mull over my rating system at the PRC22 board, and write your flames! PM them to me! I want to check my OCR account while I'm there and see that I've been getting attention!

Larry. You rock. Can't wait till the show returns (god it's so far away! it sucks!)

    Peace.

  4. Stemage - Metroid 1 "The Escape" [Metroid Metal]

You've killed the Mother Brain, but you gotta get the fuck out of there! What do you have playing in your ear? Hopefully it's the latest track from Grant Henry in the Metroid Metal series, "The Escape." There's a pretty deliberate pace here, as Stemage likes to keep the tempo intact and not deviate much from the source material here, though you do get some screaming sound effects at the end. This is certainly some infrequently covered material though and another strong addition to the series as it nears completion. Pretty much all of the Metroid Metal series is good, especially the energy of "The Theme"; follow up listening to SnappleMan's new CV2 mix by trying out the "The Escape" for more rock stuffs.

Can't wait to get home and have a listen. Maybe when my bosses leave I'll have a listen anyways...

  5. You know, the idea is good, the composition is VERY good I think, and so is the recording quality, but the performance falters tremendously...unfortunately I know first hand how hard it is to get an orchestra to be in tune (at least at the high school level).

Other people are saying that the out-of-tuneness has something to do with helping the piece...I'm inclined to disagree, but still the merits outweigh the downsides. A little long for a metroid non-medley remix...I still give it my vote for an OCR...but just barely.

Again, excellent compsition and solid recording.

  6. Larry, I'm gonna have to get that #25 sometime over the summer...or fall...or whenever, I won't erase it this time.

Can't wait to get #27 done, that was classy...classy in a "WTF?" sort of way...

    Cheers!

  7. I missed it. I was cleaning my room.

    Larry: I have #21, #24, 31% of #25, and #26.

I really really want the rest of #25. I downloaded to 92% the week you hosted it and then you removed it. A week later I canceled the download. A day later you put it back up.

Looking forward to #27 and #28!

  8. I turned off my media player at 12:30 or so...

He said he stopped recording an hour before, and the rest was just old stuff (old prank calls, more remixes, no Larry-speak).

Think it was either on par with or longer than last week.

  9. That's a pretty big face there, Debotron...

P.S. I don't like Opera's download manager, especially when downloading a 192 MB file - can't we put this on KaZaA or something? (/me is halfway done...for the third time)
